Quot Carolina could have scored 60 admitted Wildcat head coach John font a but our defense did t let them. I thought our defense played one helluva game they had their backs to the Wall the entire game and showed a lot of class in stopping the Northwestern defensive unit could have applied for overtime after All its efforts deep in Wildcat territory the Northwestern offence did t help matters any since it crossed Midfield Only three times the entire game twice in the closing minute. The deepest penetration into Carolina terrain occurred on the last play of the game when Reserve quarterback Steve Breitbeil. Making his first varsity appearance. Was dragged Down at the 41-Yard line the wildcats obviously never threatened while that s about All Carolina did a threaten the tar heels could have scored three touchdowns in the first Quarter alone but two drives were stopped on the five Yard line and nether on the 14 two of Carolina quarterback Bernie Menapace s three first Quarter fumbles turned the Ball Over to the wildcats while the third ironically enough was picked up by unc tackle Tom Burkett for an 11-Yard gain the one time the tar heels did t Fumble the Ball away. Tom Biddie split the uprights with a 21-Yard Field goal for a 3-0 Lead neither team even threatened to threaten in the second Quarter As they tediously traded punts and turnovers until a series of Short runs by Mike Voight and a pair of personal foul penalties on Northwestern moved the Ball Down to the Wildcat 14 just before halftime but again the end zone was forbidden territory to the tar heels scoring seemed just As elusive at the Start of the third Quarter when unc drove to the 25 and missed a 44-Yard Field goal attempt but Bobby Laie s Fumble recovery two plays later gave Biddie another Chance and he made Good the 25 yarder for a 6-0 Lead still another Fumble recovery set up the Only Carolina touchdown and the final score of the Day when Bill Perdue fell on the Loose pigskin at the Wildcat 28 it took Carolina la plays to March 28 Yards with Menapace finally bulldozing his Way Over behind Center from one Yard out his conversion pass intended for Walker Lee was overthrown and there was to be no More scoring despite the yardstick Nort Nwe trn 0 0 0 0-0 nor ii Carolina j 0 9 m2 unc of Biddie 21 unc mfg b Odle 25 unc Menapace i run a?41 too Nero hot Kern n Carolina fir Down i 22 run Yard 35 99 75715 pelting Yard to 96 return Yard i a Pat 9 2 4 t no punt i 35 s 36 Fumble loot 2 2 4 2 Pena ii a Yard 6-so 3-4s two More Field goal attempts by unc from Over 40 Yards out a i guess we set the tone for it when we drove the length of the football Field and fumbled on the five Yard line Quot said tar Heel coach Bill Dooley Quot we got stopped on numerous occasions and got. Our Heads Down a Little bit one person would break Down one time and the next time another person Wouida t execute Well but i thought our defense did a super Job. Forcing turnovers and giving us the bail this Side of the 50 numerous Carolina s defensive unit produced six turnovers including two interceptions and a Fumble recovery by Cal the unc offence by contrast was frustrated not Only around the goal line.
