High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - September 17, 1972, High Point, North Carolina High Points Sammy Johnson now Unis tailback by Paul Shinn associate sports editor College Park. My. High Points Sammy Johnson is a Young football player but he is quickly learning to play the game from different angles. A quarterback at Central several years ago Johnson accepted a scholarship to Carolina and before too Long was converted to a linebacker. When his ability to move with the Ball was rediscovered Johnson was put into the tar Heel Backfield As a fullback. Fullbacks done to carry the Ball much in the Carolina scheme of things however so it was with no reluctance at All that Johnson took on yet another assignment saturday afternoon a that of playing tailback a which is a key position. The 6-1, 215-Pounder, admitted after to cd a Triumph Over Maryland that be still had a lot to learn but he quickly added that a a it a Good to be Back Home carrying the Ball. A ifs been two years since i be carried the Ball and i know i need work at it a he explained Between wipes of a Towel in the muggy Carolina dressing room. A a in a out of form right now but i intend to work hard at being a tailback a he continued As he tried to find a Corner of a Bench to rest a bit after being called on to carry the Ball 14 times on which he gained 48 Yards without being thrown for a loss. His totals put him second to tailback Billy i Lite by three Yards. Hite carried six More times. Johnson did no to play in Carolinas opener because of a Charley horse but had looked Good in practice this past week. He actually made the switch to tailback about three weeks ago because of the injury situation in the tar Heel Backfield. Things still Aren t straightened out completely As Ike Oglesby played Only sparingly and Hite was in and out with the limps. Carolina used seven backs not including quarterback Nick Vidnovic partly because of the High heat and humidity and parly because of injuries. That does no to mean that Johnson will necessarily lose his spot at some later Date. A i would certainly Hope that i get to play More at Johnson grinned. A a there a More running there at Carolina. I think ill stay Here but they Are full of surprises around Here. As far As the use of a lot of backs today anytime ifs so hot ifs hard to keep running at full Speed. I thought Hite did a Good Job to stay in As Long As he did. They gained a lot of spirit Midway through the third Quarter and our kids seemed to sort of Sag. State sure has some one Flash of Speed Schwartzwalder had reason to keep an eve on was Wolf pack freshman quarterback Dave bucket who ran and passed the Syracuse defense silly a i can to believe he is Only a freshman a the Veteran coach mumbled a a lie has such poise. It was nothing special really but i think the players were trying to gain a Little respect. One paper out of vegas had us a 24-Point underdog and that certainly did no to Hurt us As far As the players were concerned on his two quarterback system Holtz noted that he tries to a go with the one who has so a state on pc a personally i need to work More on form. I need to run lower and harder. Today i was running straight tar Heel coach Bill Dooley said he used Johnson More because he had a week More of practice than the injured Oglesby. The Greensboro native got in on just two plays and that was about what was planned for him. Dooley faithfully said that Oglesby is making Progress from a leg injury which sidelined him most of last season and so far the first two games of 1972. He said Oglesby is coming along hut is not in the condition that the tar heels want. Aside from the running game fans on both sides of Bvrd stadium were surprised at the number of passes thrown by Vidnovic. Dooley has earned the reputation of teaching running As the Way to win. Hut saturday Vidnovic took to the air a dozen times modest by Maryland Sal Neville a standards hut still High for Uno. A it was Maryland a defense that forced the passing a Dooley explained. A they were putting eight men on the line. And Vidnovic did a Fine Job. That does no to mean Well be throwing More though. We Are always looking for a balanced attack. You have to do both to win. A we made mistakes today though. We gave them two touchdowns on a Fumble and a punt return. And Fenland took tsp momentum away from us in the third Quarter. T think it was a tribute to our Guys to come Hack and score some More. A i thought our secondary played Well. They made a couple of Fine saves and even made Good plays on a couple of passes that Maryland now Maryland coach Jerry Claiborne did no to show the emotions of being Overly upset at the loss even though the Terp fans had gone All out to make the Home opener a festive occasion. A it was an exciting Ball game but i would have rather that it had been Dull and we had won a airborne said. A your Effort was Good but we can t continue to make mistakes a particularly against a Good team like Carolina a and expect to win.
