High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - October 30, 1972, High Point, North Carolina High Point Enterprise monday october 30, 1972 3ball eyes turn to Clemson Carolina clash by the Enterprise sports staff All eyes will be on Clemson this weekend As the Atlantic coast conference football season swings into another round of play. The tigers 2-1 in the Loop and 3-4 Overall can move into a tie for the acc Lead with a Victory Over North c Arolina Star heels saturday at death Valley. Of course the tigers be the Only ones sharing the top spot with Carolina. Duke is also 3-1 in league play. North Carolina state is Only a whisper in Back of the others with a loss and a tie marring its league record. But it All hinges on Carolina saturday. A tar Heel Victory would give the defending champions a 4-0 conference record with Only Virginia and Duke left on its schedule. In other conference games this week n. C. State travels to Virginia. The rest of the league goes outside the conference in search of victories. Wake Forest travels to South Carolina to test the gamecocks Duke is at Home against powerful Georgia tech and Maryland journeys into the Lions Den against Penn state. Last week s action went pretty much As expected. N. C. State bounced South Carolina 42-24. Clemson blistered Wake Forest 31-0, Duke edged Navy 17-16, and Maryland rallied to nip Virginia 24-23. North Carolina was enjoying its second open Date of the passing game you d never know it by the number of Points on the scoreboard 42 but n. C. State coach Lou Holtz was upset saturday with the Wolf pack a offence. Especially the passing game. A a we be been having Shorter practice sessions a he said a and our passing has suffered. Ill guarantee one thing though. Well be out there a til the cows come Home this Holtz noted that the passing attack has been slipping the past couple of games. A a we be gotten away from our Short passing he noted. A a we be gotten greedy. Trying to go for the Long one too much. We can t keep hammering away with our running game and expect to win. Well be working All week on our and Virginia will be the first team to see if All the practice pays open dates North Carolina s open dates must have coach Bill Dooley in a state of nervous anticipation. Open dates can help a team. Or they can Hurt. And two open dates within two games of each other presents a problem most coaches never see after an open Date on oct. 7, Carolina played to a lacklustre Victory Over Kentucky then followed it with an equally unimpressive decision Over Wake Forest. And last week the tar heels were open again. A Clemson this weeks inc foe handled Wake Forest much better than we a tar Heel scout conceded. A it was an impressive if the tar heels have lost that Fine Edge on timing that characterizes Dooley teams it could be a Long saturday. But there s always that third open Date on dec. 2.Duke Sweet revenge a the Bobbey that a the tag put on Navy a two quarterbacks Fred Stuvek and Al Glenn in a Day when nicknames Are losing ground to cold numbers. Duke Wasny to impressed however and held Back Navy 17-16. It was just As Well. A the Bobbey twins handle Wasny to Goin to stick anyway because Stuvek did no to even get into the game As first time starter Glenn made few mistakes As he passed for 161 Yards and two touchdowns. And what Confidence for a Sophomore. A we should have had them. We re better than Duke. We let them beat that a Okay because Duke coach Mike Mcgee was pretty confident too when he telegraphed last years Blue Devil seniors 24 to witness revenge at Foreman Field. Navy nipped Duke last year 15-14. They witnessed and All the middies had left was a wish that they could have had that extra hour to catch the Blue this week the deacons of Wake Forest have travelled a Muddy Road All season and the future is Cloudy. Davidson is the Only victim of the stumbling offence and bumbling defense. South Carolina Duke. Virginia and Virginia tech hold wakes future for 1972. Clemson clobbered the deacons 31-0 saturday. The game was supposed to have been close but it was t. Clemson not so hot a team itself ran through the deacons like a whipping North wind. The tigers picked the Deacon pass defense apart throwing to the sidelines instead of Down the Middle where Wake tries hard to protect itself. The deacons never adjusted and Clemson threw for 129 Yards 15 or 20 at a time completing to of 15 passing attempts. This week the deacons travel Down to Columbia for a Battle with South Carolinas gamecocks. The deacons Are capable of at least one upset this season. This could be their week.
