High Point Enterprise, The (Newspaper) - October 27, 1976, High Point, North Carolina14c High Point Enterprise wednesday october 27, 1976 three judges face opposition Guilford county voters will decide eight District judgeship races on nov. 2, but will have a Choice Between candidates on Only three of those races. Incumbent democratic judges Elreta Alexander b. Gordon Gentry Byron Haworth and Edward k. Washington Are All running unopposed while Democrat Robert Cecil has no Republican opposition in his bid for the new judgeship. One Republican incumbent judge Darl Fowler faces a democratic Challenge from John b. Hat Field or. Of Greensboro. The other two races Are for seats vacated by retiring judges . Kuykendall and Walter Clark. Democrat James s. Pfaff of Greensboro is running against Republican Edmund Lowe of High Point for Kuykendall s seat while Republican Leon Stanback of Greensboro faces Democrat John f. Yeattes of Green Sboro for Clark s seat. Listed below Are profiles of the six candidates in contested races Fowler appointed to his current seat on the Bench in 1974 by gov. James Darl Fowler Holshouser is a former teacher Greensboro lawyer and assistant City attorney of Greensboro. He is a graduate of Marion College and the unc Chapel Hill Law school. Fowler says the current court system is basically but added some legislative changes Are needed. He would advocate cooperation Between judges and More efficient sharing of court loads a move he says will also reduce waiting for witnesses and others. Judges must also become More knowledgeable and More involved with the people so that individual differences become a Factor in he said. He is a graduate of Dart Mouth College and the unc Chapel Hill Law school. Hatfield has said he will maintain regular office hours As a state employee and he John Hatfield says he intends to be available to lawyers for pre trial conferences before court convenes. Hatfield does not recommend any judge set hard and fast rules for use in cases where discretion is allowed. He feels existing county detention facilities ought to be used better and current judges create too Many paperwork problems for the clerk of court s office. Edmund Lowe is a High Point attorney who is a High Edmund Lowe Point College and Wake Forest Law school graduate. He has been practising Law Here since 1961. Lowe feels District court is the people s court and that current negative feelings about the court Are based on first impressions of court visitors. He would work to Correct those impressions he adds by conducting the court with dignity being courteous to each citizen and being willing to answer All questions. Pfaff who opposes Lowe is currently chief assistant District attorney for District courts under Ray Alexander. A graduate of unc Chapel Hill and the Wake Forest Law school Pfaff also served As director of Greensboro Legal Aid. He would work to improve District court procedure to eliminate court backlog staff says adding he has ideas on now to do this based on his District court experience. Pfaff favors James Pfaff guidelines for appointment of Public defenders and offering restitution for witnesses possibly paid for by defendants. Stanback a Greensboro at Torney is a graduate of . Leon Stanback Central and the Mccu Law school. He has served on the Guilford county District at Torney s staff for two years before entering private prac Tice. Stanback says he is Basing his candidacy on stricter penalties for repeaters Mak ing the judiciary More responsive to the Community and increasing efficiency of the District courts. He feels in most instances coordination Between judges and District attorneys could eliminate extensive waiting by witnesses by informing Tern of the Progress of their Case. John yeattes yeattes who opposes Stan Back has served As assistant for the clerk of court of Superior court since 1962. Prior to that time lie was assistant City attorney for Greensboro. He is a graduate of Wake Forest College and Wake Forest Law school. Yeattes feels his 14 years of experience As assistant clerk qualifies him to be a knowledgeable District court judge.
