High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - October 22, 1976, High Point, North Carolina By Paul Shinn take with. Shinn. High coaches at big schools whether College or .0?z school used to have a general agreement with coaches of smaller schools a we wont play you. It was done for two reasons. One was financial because even a pair of schools in close proximity to each other did no to necessarily Ryean a lot of Money for the teams involved. The second reason was More important to the coach though. Why play a smaller school when there is nothing to be gained if the big school wins everybody says a so what a if the big schools loses it must live with the embarrassment. Well East Carolina finally broke through the tradition and started playing its big Brothers to the East a Carolina and . State. Not Only did ecu get on the schedules it started getting into the end zones. The next thing people knew the pirates were honest to gosh beating the big boys sometimes overwhelming them. So fast did East Carolina move into an Equality with the tar heels and Wolf pack the Small and big aspect of the meetings was forgotten. Some old time alumni of the red or Blue May still consider ecu a Little school but they a have a hard time proving it to most other fans. A All of that goes to make this saturdays meeting Between Carolina and East Carolina at Chapel Hill nothing like a breather. And if Duke and Maryland weren to playing Down the Road for what probably will be the Atlantic coast conference championship this would be the game of the week. All but one team Are again involved in league action. Clemson is at state and Virginia is at Wake Forest in the others. All Are 1 30 contests and with All teams playing in the state plus the appearance of Jimmy. Carter at the state fair to drum up some votes the Quot roads will be gorged to bursting Point most of the Day. It be a bad idea to get started now and Camp out because Little headway will be made in any direction on saturday. It Duke s unexplainable tie with Clemson and states win Over Carolina messed up last week s picks. The seasons log now reads 23-11-3. And this week does t look any easier to Call than the last one. But Here goes. East Carolina 6-0 at Carolina 4-2 a somewhere along the line the tar heels lost something. Maybe it was listening to the labs of Charlie Justice Over the radio or maybe injuries Are catching up. Even though Mike Voight is now the leading career rusher in the acc with a Yard More than sex tar Heel Don Mccauley he May have to look for some help in out pointing the pirates. Statistics have shown the teams which have gone to the Wishbone or option offence have been the most difficult to Stop from scoring. Quarterbacks who can read the defense and fullbacks with Power Are keys to the Wishbone and apparently East Carolina has both. But the pirate defense in t to be overlooked since it is in the top five nationally in total and Rushing defense. Ecu coach Pat Dye sums up the conflict with a this years game has More at stake than last year i think for both teams. Both clubs were struggling when we played last year. But at this Point we Are both having a fairly successful modest Isnit he East Carolina is growing and so is the athletic program More Money will be on the Way As the winning continues. Based on ecu a ground oriented attack and the Way state moved against unc last week the Call goes to the team from Greenville 35-28. Clemson 0-1-1, 1-3-2 at state 1-2, 2-4-1 the Best spot Clemson can find itself in team play is second in pass offence in the league. Individually Jerry Butler leads with 25 receptions. The tigers figure to do much of what they do Best if they re to make a Dent in the Wolf pack defense. Clemson is next to last in scoring defense allowing three touchdowns a game average. State should pick up a couple More on its own. And depending on what Maryland a Steve Atkins can do at Duke High Point s Ted Brown could become the league s top rusher and in Good position to win the championship this year. State has to have a big following in these parts and with things looking up for the Wolf pack the cheers should match those Given Carter Over in the Fairgrounds. Call state a 28-14 Victor. Maryland 2-6, 6-0 at Duke 1-0-1, 3-2-1 a if Atkins can to play and it s doubtful he will drop out of the running for the Rushing title because the Mcaa requires a player to see action in 75 per cent of his teams games. One More no show because of his injury and Atkins is out. Duke has a non losing Streak of its own seven in conference play. That a less than half of Maryland a but it does show the Blue devils Success within the conference. Duke quarterback Mike Dunn is just a step behind Mark manges in total offence the Terpsy National ranking in t going to be a Factor. It May be a Hazard. Something in the wind has the odor of an upset but Duke wont do it on Field goals. Until somebody beats them the terrapins have the Edge. Make it 18-14, or closer. Virginia 0-2, 6-6 at Wake Forest 2-1, 3-4 a the deacons already have an All Star regardless of How the remainder of the season turns out. Safety Bill Armstrong has been invited to play in the East West game in California in january. He can add to his credits this week. He should be in on plenty of tackles and have opportunities for interceptions considering Virginia is expected to be playing from behind most of the afternoon. Virginia s highest output has been 17 Points. Opponents Are averaging 26. Wake is better than average. Say 30-12. Anderson reds Are now men new York a seven games ago Sparky Anderson knew it would take Only seven games for his Cincinnati reds to become baseball champions of the world. The first of those seven came in Philadelphia. The reds winners of the National leagues West division were playing the Phillies the Best of the East. A i said to myself then that if we beat Pitcher Steve Carlton in the first game wed win seven straight a Anderson recalled. The reds did beat Carlton. Then they beat Philadelphia again. And again. That was the National league Pennant. Then came the new York Yankees who had just won the american league Flag in an exhausting five game series with Kansas City. The reds beat the yanks. Then they beat them again. And again. And again. Seven games later the reds were no. I for the second straight year. Thursday nights clincher was a 7-2 Romp built on Johnny benches two Home runs and the pitching of Gary Nolan and reliever will Mcenaney. It was the first world series sweep since Baltimore a Over los Angeles in 1966 and it was the first time a National league club had taken two straight world series since the new York giants did it in 1921-22. It was to put it mildly awesome. They beat us tonight a muttered Catcher Thurman Munson the Only Bright spot in the otherwise Pale new York lineup. Quot they beat us this time they beat us four straight they beat the hell out of us All the Way through. What else is there to say a whatever else there was to say was said succinctly by Anderson. A this Ball club has More class than any other club of the 24 All around the country a Anderson said. A last year when we beat Boston in seven games they were like kids. Now they re men Quot indeed. In the Cincinnati locker room the mood was remarkably subdued As though these reds were used to such championships a which in fact they Are. There was Little of the Yaho oing Cham pagne bathing. Towel throwing of last year when it took the reds seven dramatic games to subdue the Boston red sox. A last year was certainly exciting More so than this one a said Bench the runaway most valuable player in the series for his eight hits in 15 at bats and six runs batted in. It May Well have been Munson a finest game Ever too he had four hits scored one run and drove in the other. His six straight hits Over two games tied a series record set in 1924 by Washington a Goose Goslin. Munson batted .529 in the series far above any other Yankees starter.
