Bison round two coming by Benny Phillips and Paul Kutz Enterprise sports writers Here we go again wham Bam. Pop bang Zap zip crunch and the Bell rings for the second round. Two Days away give or take a few hours and it is time for the second football meeting Between High Point Andrews and High Point Central. And the stage is set. Andrews made a clean sweep of the first round winning last year 23-7 when both teams went into the game undefeated. This year both the Rison and raiders Are 6-1 coming into Friday night s Battle at Albion Millis stadium both teat to Winston Salem Reynolds. Lets go Back to the first game of the season. Andrews was giving the Wishbone to a try but it took Only two games for Rob Roswell to reach Back into the Corner and pull out his faithful single Wing. Meanwhile in the season opener Reynolds beat the raiders 26-15. Three games into the season the Rison ran into Reynolds and lost 14-6. This year both teams shape up stronger defensively than offensively. Last year Central had Tony Shaver and James Ritterson to carry the Backfield Load. This year the Rison Don t have a Wetterson or a Shaver in the Backfield last year Andrews had Herbert Cole and Sammy Durham to make its offence Shine. There Are no Coles or Durhams this season. Roth clubs however do have headhunters on defense no tougher do they come than Darrell Pinson. Centrals defensive end. The Bison have others such As Tommy Tate Greg Hinnant and Larry Lazar to name a few. Take a look at Andrews defense and ready to Knock a few blocks off Are Guys like Jack Powell Sammie Little and Billy Sorrell All Tough As nails. Okay from this Corner lets Lay the cards on the table for the Blue chips showdown and see what the results Are. We have established that both clubs Are better defensively. This is not to say that both will stink up the stadium offensively but it will not be a High scoring game either. Rill Brockman is centrals Best runner in the Backfield but he has t proven himself a breakaway threat so far. Quarterback Carl Scott helps at times with the running but not enough for a defense to change its plans to Stop his running. Andrews has Harold Nash who is probably the fastest Man on either club and who has a 5.9 average per carry As the result of breakaway runs. Nash however is no Power runner and Central will Cut Down on his average per carry if they keep him inside. Johnny Evans maybe the Best athlete in the City gets the Tough yardage for the raiders. Andrews running game is More effective inside than outside. While centrals running attack is strongest off tackle. There Are schools with better passing attacks than either Central or Andrews. Scott is capable of throwing the bomb for the Bison and has shown c o insider Abl improvement especially in the Grimsley game last Friday. Scott is also fairly effective on the Short pass. Chris Thomas and Donnie Golden seem to be his Best targets. Evans throws for Andrews and is 23 for 74 for the season which is no great accomplishment. Evans problem May partly be receivers. Ken Hill with eight receptions is his Best target. Now lets move on to the kicking game which we say could Well be the key Factor in the game. Central cannot punt. An draws can and therefore Evans could Well be the key figure in Friday nights game. The most miserable phase of Central s game All season has been punting. This Hasni to been a problem at Andrews where Evans is currently averaging 41 8 Yards per punt. Included in his average is a 73-Varder last week against Parkland. It boils Down to this if the game turns into a defensive struggle As expected then Evans punting could go a Long Long Way toward keeping the raiders out of the Hole. While Central s punting leaves much to be desired see raiders on 4-c Deer season started oct. 16 bag your Buck with a Browning Rifle.
