High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - October 10, 1974, High Point, North Carolina Will from Page 4c High Point Enterprise thursday october to 1974 5cquayle mighty Chestnut bit the dust. In fact the loss of the major contributor to the annual Mast crop seems More Likely to have caused major problems for wildlife populations that anything else. Of course As most know the restoration of game populations since the turn of the Century has been relatively successful through habitat management and enforced Hunting regulations. Deer populations Are much higher now than at any other time in this Century. The Turkey is a hopeful candidate for restoration in Western North Carolina and Early efforts to Cape from page4c also use this Light line for casting heavier lures and Bottom rigs but you May snap off a few rigs unless you attach a 12-15 foot Section of 20 Pound test Quot Shock Tippet to the end of your line. Actually a lighter action eight foot spinning Rod makes a better plugging Rod for most smaller species particularly sea Trout. It can also double As a Bottom fishing outfit for such species As spot Whiting flounder and the like. Some experienced anglers even use such Light gear for big blues. The larger Rod will probably work Best for stripers. Some anglers use even heavier rods for stripers including the Quot Hatteras heaver Type of conventional surf Rod with a revolving spool reel. For most fishing however such tackle is really too heavy. By All Means be sure your reels have drags that work. Many big fish Are lost by fishermen using reels that have poor drags. Also adjust your drag so that any big fish that strikes can take line and resist the temptation to tighten the drag while playing the fish. Most of the big fish i be seen anglers lose were lost because the Angler snubbed Down the drag to Stop a Strong fish. When you do that something has to give. Usually its your line. One word of advice. Although its often Wise to take advice from local Quot experts Quot with a Grain of Salt it Isnit always True. If you hire a surf guide by All Means listen to what he says. If anybody can put you on fish he can and in my experience the Hatteras guides a though there Arentt Many a Are very Good. Also you might want to Stop at one of the local tackle shops when you arrive and pick up on the latest fishing information. In be always gotten reliable information from Quot the red drum tackle shop in Buxton and Quot fishing stuff Quot at Hatteras. Restock turkeys seem to be paying off. Squirrels seem to be in Good shape but the Bear a having lost most of its original mature Forest habitat a is still in trouble. But it be Nice if the american Chestnut could also be returned to its former glory surely the return of the Chestnut would be beneficial to our present wildlife populations. So what Are the chances some blight resistant Oriental chestnuts Are being studied and that a where we still get roasted chestnuts from in some of the Large Northern cities. But this is not considered the Best solution. The Best Hope is that a Strain of blight resistant american Chestnut can be developed and scientists Are working on it. Already there is some evidence that the Many surviving sprouts of american chestnuts Are becoming More blight resistant. The sprouts live longer before the blight gets them and some have reached four inches in diameter. Also there is the Hope that a blight resistant mature Chestnut will someday be found somewhere in the vast appalachians. When and if it is Ever found the nuts from such a Quot Grandfather Quot tree could help restore the Chestnut to its former Range and glory.
