High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - October 9, 1974, High Point, North Carolina A Memphis South men visit r. Al outside the locker room East Davidson split end Avery Cutshaw has a message for aspiring pass receivers. Practice can make touchdowns. Cutshaw is one half of what is perhaps the most potent passer receiver combination in the area. He and Golden Eagle quarterback Tim Wray have combined for 62 Points through the air in six games this season much More than any other area receiver has scored. And the senior co Captain is Quick to Point out those did t come easily. A Tim and i and Kyle Kyle Hayes the other East receiver practice every Day All summer running our patterns and working out on the weights Cutshaw pointed out. A Kyle and i worked on our Speed and Tim Learned to go by our Speed. A now we can run patterns and make out cuts and Tim knows when to throw the Ball and where Well Cutshaw Hasni to actually had that time to learn his position a in his Early football years he was primarily a tailback. As a Sophomore at East Davidson coach Howard Hayes played him a tight end. And it was actually not until his Junior year that he became a split end. A i did play receiver on passing Downs in Little league Ball a Cutshaw said. A we ran a single Wing offence and i was the tailback but on passing Downs they d move Tim to tailback and me to Wingback and head throw to me. At 6-0, 185, Cutshaw runs the 40 in a about 4.8 or 4.9?T, giving him All the ingredients to be a Good receiver. But he gives much of the credit for this season s Success to Wray. A a time a just a Good All round quarterback a he said. A actually his Arm has just come around this year. He a always been Able to throw Well but he a improved since the season started. Like any quarterback hell miss once in a while a Cutshaw continued. A but he usually throws it right in there with zip and it s up to Kyle and me to catch although he Hasni to had All that much time at split end Cutshaw readily admits it s his favorite position among the several he a played for the Golden eagles. A a in be played a lot of positions a he said. A i was a defensive end last year and i m playing Strong safety in defense this season but i love the split end and for an unusual reason. A i like to catch passes but i also like to Block a Cutshaw commented. A on end sweeps you can Peel Back and catch the defender when he a not looking with a crack Back of course such blocks can be penalty trouble a if they re not executed properly. A i Learned the hard Way about Cutshaw admitted. A i was called twice for clipping against Central Davidson last year. But the rules won t let you crack Back below the Waist because of All the knee injuries it would cause. This season i Haven t been called one important Rule for a Good receiver is a to know exactly what you re doing at All times according to the East Davidson scoring Leader. A a Good wide receiver has to remember a lot of things a he said. A you have a lot of different patterns to run and if you run the wrong one ifs trouble for the quarterback. Then you also have blocking also important to a receiver Are Speed and Good Well As the ability to concentrate while knowing defenders Are zeroing in. A i have a Way of thinking about that a said Cutshaw referring to catching a pass under pressure. A a they re going to hit you whether you be got the Ball or whether you drop it. So its Best to catch the Ball. You know you re going to get hit but you can to think about one thing Cutshaw and his East Davidson teammates Are thinking about is their playoff chances. While some May feel that two Early losses have knocked the eagles out of postseason play the players themselves Don t see it that Way. A people would think we d Start going downhill after we lost two Cutshaw offered. A but that a the great thing about this team. We re All really close and there Arentt any quitters. If we were we have played so Well against Central Davidson East won 35-0. A at the beginning of the season we set High goals for ourselves a he continued. We May not be Able to go undefeated now but we still know we can make the state playoffs. A we still feel like we have something to play for a that playoff berth. And our team will work together to get and that a coming from a Guy who knows something about hard work.
