That was until Ned Craven came from Pfeiffer. The Youthful head coach has already Lead the raiders to their Best season in the school s history and is a step away from the state playoffs. Since losing the season opener to East Davidson 36-8. The raiders have come on Strong to shut out their next live opponents winning four while tying the other. And while the defense has been shining this season the offence came of age As they scored 40 Points in Friday afternoon s blanking of Oak Ridge Academy a your seniors came into the Early practice and decided they could win this year commented Craven when asked Why the sudden turn around. A another thing is the experience of our Ball club. A were aggressive and have a lot of Hustle. We May not look pretty. And we do make some mistakes but we generally get the Job Craven has not noticed any effects of the recent Success on his team a it has t really affected them. They really enjoy winning and Are just now starting to get used to it. A tradition Means a lot to a team and we Are trying to build a winning tradition Here a he added. Denton entertains Stoneville Friday night in a game that will decide the area s representative into the state 1-a playoffs a it is certainly one of the biggest games Ever played Here a the coach said. Craven was asked what kind of a team the raiders would face in Stoneville. A in the past they have been a tremendous defensive team and this year is no different the Only indicator we have is they beat Oak Ridge by two touchdowns and we beat them by six. A i look for a hard hitting defensive Battle next week one touchdown could mean Victory for either team a he concluded a Pfeiffer graduate in 1973. The 23-year-old Craven could easily be mistaken for a red Raider tailback does being Edenton on so Moser unhappy with attitude Small Consolation North Davidson place kicker Jeff Henderson 52 gets Consolation from Black Knight cheerleaders Nikki Darr left and Sherri Deitrich but does t seem to be too Happy anyway. The North kicker suffered a broken leg in the knights loss to East Rowan and probably won t return to action this year. Henderson will get another Chance to use his kicking skills for North however. He a just a Sophomore. By Benny Phillips associate sport editor Lawrence Maser plays to win he wishes he had to teammates with the same attitude. He admits he does t. He likes nostalgia because he can remember when things were different at High Point Central. Currently the Bison Are having a losing season Winston Salem Reynolds tacked on the latest defeat to the tune of 43-7 Friday night. Moser went on the Field to win. But the loss came As no real Surprise a was a team we Don t have the determination it takes to win Ball games. He said after the loss 1 there Are too Many Guys on our team who Aren t serious about what they Are doing. A they come in on game Day in a Jovial mood mentally we have too Many people who Are not prepared to play football Moser is a i 190-Pound senior. He is a linebacker on defense and a guard on offence. He broke into the varsity lineup As a Sophomore. The attitude of the entire team was much better then recalls Moser a last year the mental attitude was Only fair but this year it has gotten out of hand for the most part it s the same Guys Over and Over. They just Don t care. A a tonight against Reynolds a Moser added a fumbles Hurt us plus our line broke Daw. We just did t have it Reynolds has a Lawrence Moser wants to win Good team but we should have played them a better game than we did a Moser is serious about his football. A i Don t think i have Ever worked with a player that i have enjoyed working with More than Moser a remarked Pat Withers Assis Tant coach at Central who works with the linebackers. A the is a student of Tho game a adds Withers. A during his free time he comes to the gymnasium and goes Over and Over game films. He is so smart about the game itself that it makes up tor any physical ability he is lacking a Points out Withers. Davidson College scouts watched Moser Friday night and were impressed a there Are linebackers and linemen who Are larger and faster than Moser Quot adds Withers. But his knowledge of the game and his desire to play make up the Moser says he wants to play College Ball Quot right now i m trying to pull my grades up to better than a c average. I want to be Able to go anywhere i might get an offer a he adds. Plus. Moser wants to win. A Moser on so Battle for 2a playoff berths not Over there s still a lot of action to come in the Central Carolina conference but the whole thing is boiling Down to a few crucial games. Randleman s narrow win Over West Davidson Friday night solved the problem of which one team would continue with an unblemished record and went a Long Way toward deter Twining one of the postseason playoff spots but final league standings Are far from being determined. A we re going to take them one at a time to use an old coaching cliche a said Randleman Charlie Gregory after his club had pulled it out of the fire against the Green dragons. The tigers take on Southwest Randolph next Friday and if any games a sure win this one will be. Gregory is still very cautious about predicting Victory however. A Southwest showed last week they can be tougher than anyone thought they could a he commented Fajwil Nihon outside the locker room prep schedule thursday s games Ledford at West Davidson Friday s Garnet Morehead at Andrews Central at Smith Albemarle at Trinity Concord at Thomasville Randleman at Southwest Randolph Allen Jay at East Davidson Southern Guilford at Northwood Forest Hills at Central Davidson Ragsdale at Northwest Guilford Stoneville at Denton referring to West s 20-6 win. A Well have to play Ball at Southwest Randolph to looking beyond the cougars Randleman must still beat Ledford Central Davidson and Allen Jay to go undefeated. The tigers will need the kind of play they be gotten out of quarterback Mark Routh the past three weeks to win those three the Tiger senior has shown amazing ability to perform in clutch situations. A the was fabulous a commented Gregory mincing no words on his signal caller s performance against West Davidson. A that boy really stays Cool. He turned a busted play into a 40-Yard run. Against Southern Guilford he turned a fumbled Handoff into a 20-Yard touchdown Star Randleman halfback Kenny Laughlin also made a big play Friday but it was of the defense variety the Tiger speedster chased West running Back Lenny Wegwart 35 Yards and caught him at the Randleman 33 to prevent a touchdown that would have won the game for the dragons. A a Kenny a that kind of boy a said Gregory. A the saved us with that play. People ask if a runner can take the licks Well Kenny can do it. He can take any Knock anyone can give and come through when things get the loss was not an easy one for Joe Young to Swallow. His team had been hampered by numerous Backfield injuries yet had still managed to stay in till the final seconds. A not too bad for a team with half a Young commented at the game s end. A maybe if Dale Snider and Zeb Little had been Well things would have been unfortunately the Quot ifs done to count in the conference standings and the Green dragons must now prepare for t a Tough Ledford squad that also has a Good Chance at the playoff berth. A getting these boys up for Ledford is really going to be a Job a Young admitted a they were so up for this it game and then to lose it so close 16-14. We be got Only four Days to prepare and with injuries. I just Don t Over in Panther country Ledford remained unbeaten in the conference standings with a narrow 14-9 win Over Southern Guilford. In Sonny raiders looking ahead with new enthusiasm by Jim Pettit Enterprise sports writer High Point Andrews head football coach John Morris can look Back Over the past five games with mixed emotions he can look ahead to the next five games. Possibly More. With renewed enthusiasm Friday night Morris red raiders whacked a Good Reidsville team 28-7 in what May be the Pivotal game in the group 7 conference race to pull Andrews season record to 3-2. It was an important conference Victory for the raiders now 2-0 in the league and was also Andrews first Road Victory of the season. A after you lose two on the Road you begin to wonder of you re going to win one away from Morris noted. A now that we be won one on the Road against a Good football team it has to help our Confidence. A a we be improved in some phase of the game every week. We looked real Good offensively against Reidsville bul we got burned on some of their passes. So now we have to work on that. We re putting a piece into the Puzzle every week this time the offensive line came the Raider offensive line consists of ends dreg Hill and Alfred Mcelrath tackles Richard lain and Steve Campbell guards Steve Brown and John Patterson and Center Doug Pruitt and is As sturdy As seven jeeps. Friday night against Reidsville they were tuned More like racing Fermis that opened the Gates for speedy running backs ted Brown and Charlie Williams. And the Gates stayed open to the tune of 293 Yards Rushing Brown had 196 of the Yards and All four Raider touchdowns. Williams added a raiders on so says Ragsdale s dowdy football helps student Ragsdale cornerback Darrell dowdy gets help from coach Rick Larrick Tiger senior brings experience to defensive signal callers Job photo by Sonny hedge cock by Howard Hayes Enterprise staff writer Jamestown Quot i think sports in High school Are important because they give a student something to do with his tune and help keep Hun out of trouble a this is the theory of Ragsdale s defensive Corner Back or defensive halfback if you prefer Darrell dowdy. Dowdy who is in his senior year has been a starter of Hie tigers defensive team tor the past three years. When asked if he preferred his defensive assignment Over offence dowdy said yes. A i have played offence and i find it More fun to hit than be hit a he explained in dowdy a opinion a the defense is More important than the offence i believe in what defensive coach Rick Larrick teaches a if a team can to score against you. They can to beat you a said dowdy the 147-Pound i it Owdy says he thinks his Light weight is a help instead of a Handicap a i feel that Speed is More important. At Corner Back you first have to get into position. Of you Are where you Are sup posed to be on time and get stationed you can Stop a runner much larger than yourself a dowdy commented a a we have a Good defense mainly because we anticipate what the other team is going to do. We practice our upcoming opponents plays and learn to feel them out a he explained dowdy said he thought that a Good defense makes an opponent desperate to score a when you be got them in that position they make mistakes and we the defense capitalize on their mistakes to get the Ball for the defense in Good Field position a As cornerback dowdy a responsibility is double a i first move into position to watch for the pass and then cover for the run a he explained. Of it be a run the opponent shoots but a hefty halfback behind a Blocker in dowdy s direction. A a in be been hit hard by some Ball carriers had fitted dowdy a but i be never been Hurt a dowdy says his first Choice of a College would be the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Quot i would like to play football if i get the Fie added. He is the oldest in a family of two Brothers and three Sisters dowdy says both of his Brothers like sports Quot and both kind of look up to me i suppose a that works out pretty Good for him dowdy feels Quot Bac use they like to play with me and it gives me a Little More Ragsdale which is now 5-0 for the season takes on Northwest Guilford at Northwest next Friday.
