High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - May 29, 1974, High Point, North Carolina A High Point Enterprise wednesday May 29, 1974storytelling workshop held at Library members of the full time staff of the Parks and recreation department who direct City playgrounds and recreation centers attended a training session in storytelling and Reading to children on Friday at the High Point Public Library. The workshop covered the techniques of storytelling How to choose stories for children of various Ages storytelling demonstrations and films. Miss Elizabeth Gurley head of children a services and mrs. Jacquelyn Torrence and miss Carolyn lain members of the Library staff gave the demonstrations with visiting groups of children from Beddington Mission and Christ the King school. For several years the Library has conducted a Story hour and Book program at playgrounds to interest children who do not usually use the Library in Reading and listening to stories. The 42 volunteers from the High Point and surrounding communities were invited to a program and luncheon. The group was welcomed by mrs. W. H. Paver coordinator of special services at the presbyterian Home. She stated a in a years time More than 8000 hours of service has been Given to the presbyterian Home by persons in this mrs. W. R. Atkins was introduced As chairman of the red Cross volunteers. The volunteers give two hours a week in the nursing unit where they read to patients write letters and help feed those unable to feed themselves. In introducing mrs. R. A. Short As chairman of the service Circle from first presbyterian Church mrs. Paver said a these ladies come once a month to provide transportation for shopping. They also Are available on a moments notice to provide a ride for a doctor s appointment or a trip to a special event in the mrs. Paver introduced other Community people with special talents who share these talents in Many ways a music sewing parties decorations at special seasons of the year and Bible study. Mrs. Pat Caffey a member of the Home and chairman of the Home Council expressed appreciation from the members of the presbyterian Home. R. A.
