High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - June 18, 1974, High Point, North Carolina By pm Soma take Al vim so mtg about this time each year for the past five the Carolina cougars would be opening their Rookie Camp somewhere around Greensboro for the purpose of letting anybody who wanted take a Chance on making the professional roster. This week will pass without the Camp and without the cougars some feel this year May pass without the american basketball association despite what commissioner Mike Storen has said to the contrary. That first june summer was hot. There was no air conditioning in the Aart gymnasium where coach Bones Mckinney split time looking at Talent and swapping jokes with friends along the sidelines. The cougars were new then. They were fresh out of Texas an idea turned into a franchise by Jim Gardner Mckinney had been hired As the first coach after turning Down the offer several times. Mckinney did t have a lot to look at that first Rookie Camp. Really it was More than a Rookie Camp Back then. Anybody who could lace on a pair of sneaks could try out. After All Houston did t have a wealth of Ball players when it was losing there. The cougars were building from the Bench up. Even for those who liked the idea of having a professional sport franchise in North Carolina for the first time it must have been a trying experience watching a lot of out of shape athletes old athletes former athletes and non athletes race up and Down the gym floor for their final workouts before the staff went to work on getting a team together for the 1969-70 season. Mckinney did his Job. However and the cougars turned in a .500 season and made the playoffs Indiana stopped the revelry in the minimum number of games. But things were looking on the Bright Side. Even though the club changed owners and had at succession of coaches future summer Camps began to take on a semblance of order. With each succeeding year it became More difficult for a player to come in and make the team without some pretty Good credentials. By the time Larry Brown took Over As coach the team was in pretty solid condition. It was the Darling of the Aba two seasons ago when it lost to Kentucky for the Eastern division championship in Charlotte a place the players admitted they did no to like to use for any game. Things got so Good there Wasny to any use for a Rookie ramp anymore. With a pile of Money and time spent the cougars had put together one of the most talented teams and probably the most highly paid teams in either league. But the seeds of a slide had been with the team almost from the beginning the Success of that first season cast a Shadow Over the operation if the club officials noted the team Wasny to displacing College basketball or even competing with it very Well they did t let on publicly. But the summer Camps came and went and while the cougars kept growing in Talent they never matured. And maybe neither has the league. The abundance of problems plugged at the dam at one time or another from one source or another May have reached a Climax when Cougar owner Tedd Munchak decided to quit spending his Money on the team for a number of reasons. As late As their Springs playoffs. Cougar management said there would be no consolidation with the National basketball association the Aba would make it on its own and possibly expand. Now the chances of a consolidation appear the least painful Way of easing the 7-year-old league out of existence. Where did the cougars and the Aba go wrong merger or rather the Lack of it is the answer. Done to think anybody thought there be a merger by now a a Cougar front office spokesman said. A it Wasny to inevitable that the cougars or the Aba would fail. Under Normal sane conditions things could have been worked out for the Benefit of both leagues. But the conditions of the past several years have been anything but sane. A i done to think there will be professional basketball in Greensboro again. Anybody would have to be drunk to think the Aba will put another team in Here and i believe the same is True for the Storen is supposed to announce this week the future of the Aba. It May include a league with As few As eight teams or As Many As 12. There Are cities under consideration for expansion. On the surface at least you have to figure the new Money to be just As stupid As the old Money since so Many of the remaining Aba franchises Are in financial difficulties and the once solid ownerships that each of the Aba commissioners has enjoyed talking about when first taking office appear to be cracking like Sand castles on the Beach. People in this area can still look Back on a bit of sports history though and talk about it from a first hand experience. A few May even recall the first summer Camp. They might think the cougars like those Early aspiring players just did no to have it.
