High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - June 9, 1974, High Point, North Carolina Eight area backpackers begin first trip whoopee watch out Wesser Bald Here we come to it nth Enid Kumor. T _ i _ _ in. In Solmi a Krino coma or i rid ref ran ref hit to editors note this is the first of a four part series by Enterprise sports writer Carol Wilson on her experiences during a six Day backpacking trip along the appalachian Trail of which a part runs through a rugged Section of the Western North Carolina s mountains. By Carol Wilson Enterprise sports writer or Johnnie s is a restaurant West of Bryson City on the Way to Wesser until the other Day both were just a couple of places i had heard of somewhere in the North Carolina mountains. Or. Johnnie s is a Small Friendly place fifteen people create a Rush crowd the food in t cooked until after its ordered it was on thursday. May 23. That nine half awake travel weary strangers walked into or johnnies ordered lunch ate and left there was Little comment on the food the service or any other aspect of the restaurant. Six Days later the same nine people returned again to eat lunch. Well not quite the same they were not hardly As Well groomed and in fact had a distinctive Aroma to anyone who dared get too close there probably was t a clean Fingernail in the entire Bunch and everyone s hair seemed two shades Darker Only a few washed their hands before eating and their general dirtiness did t seem to bother them food for twice their number was ordered and almost As soon As it appeared on the table it was devoured the Cook wondered out loud if any had eaten since their last visit. Carol i Ilson if ter a vim spent my adolescence read inf seventeen and ingenue magazines Dave s list of suggested clothing for the trip sent me reeling backwards. It was a noisier crowd More boisterous and writing to comment on everything and everybody in sight. One boy asked the waitress if president Nixon was still in office what happened to those nine people in the six Days Between visits to or johnnies restaurant is the subject of this four part Story i Hope to relate a few of the Joys and pains of a firs. Time Backpacker or rather eight first time backpackers As All but one of our group were novices at the sport. The one Brave soul who led the Outing was Myca youth director Dave Heiser. An experienced Backpacker who has led Many such groups through the Adirondack mountains. Keiser came to High Point in february and has devoted time since toward getting area people interested in the sport he had taken one group through the Nan Tahala mountains in april and we were to be the second Outing a a we consisted of six male members of the Westchester Academy senior class and two girls a myself and Kathy Jacobs a recent graduate of unc a department of physical education. The boys were looking Forward to the trip As their senior Outing a final fling before graduation. They were out for fun and backpacking seemed just that. I was not quite so sure i was going As part of my Job i Wasny to quite sure what to expect and i knew that a year behind a desk had not left me in the Best of shape. But i had decided to go in March and could t Back Down now since i had made my decision known to the rest of the office staff i had become the object of quite a bit of teasing. My More optimistic friends figured i would fall off a Mountain others were not sure i d make it that far there was an office Pool betting on the number of blisters i d get. The lowest number was to. I was fed full of grim stories about campers being devoured alive by bears and Timber rattlers hanging from tree limbs to assault the unwary hiker. Then in april the Story came out about a Backpacker being killed on the appalachian Trail in Georgia i found six copies of the Story in my typewriter when i came to work the next morning with that kind of support i knew i go wrong Dave was a Little More reassuring in our pre trip meeting he informed us that most snakes would be the North tote to tiie theres no Esperance like it. We made it Back Tho big Grin on my face first Row second from left is no fake i can honestly say i be never been happier to see the Myca parking lot. As you can see. Most of my backpacking companions share my Happy sentiments found on logs and rocks and that if we just looked before we sat Down there was Little danger. Besides he said snakebites weren to so bad a it was the snakebite treatment that really Hurt. As for blisters he admitted they could be a problem a bring lots of band aids a he said and the Grin was More than a Little sly we would be hiking about a 30-Mi in Section of the Nan Tahala portion of the appalachian Trail which in its firing lots of band aids a he said and the Grin was More than a Little sly. Entirety stretches from Maine to Georgia. While travelling each would carry his own equipment on his Back a including sleeping bag clothes and a portion of the common food Stock having spent my adolescence Reading seventeen and ingenue magazines Dave a list of suggested clothes they Are Wackrow i to r Scott Murphy our Leader Dave Keiser. Michael Ott Bob Slane David Cong Den. Alex Rankin kneeling i to r Scott Gayle myself Kathy Jacobs. Everyone was asked to bring some kind of Cap or hat. Ii assumed it was to make hair brushing unnecessary. About the Only thing we needed in abundance according to our Leader was underwear and socks. Once All the gear had been accumulated it had to be wrapped in plastic bags and stuffed into the Backpack and i do mean stuffed what does t fit does t go. And although what i planned to take covered my entire living room floor it somehow was squeezed into the zippered compartments of my Backpack. I discovered after a while that sealing the plastic bags was not a Wise idea a i think i ended up packing several cubic inches of hot air. But getting the pack ready was not the Only preparation needed there was also the Small matter of breaking in my hiking boots a whatever you do. Don i show up in Brand new boots a Dave had warned when i bought the boots they had been a stylish color of Blue and already i was envisioning the uses they could be put to off the Trail like High school football games in Dave Heiser snakebite Aren t so bad it is the snakebite treatment that really hurts the rain. It but one coat of Snow Seal it water repellent for hiking heaven forbid in the rain turned them a putrid Black not exactly the height of fashion. Though now ugly they were still practical having the lug rubber Ibram soles Dave said were so important and being tall enough a about five and a half inches to give my Ankles support. They were not quite comfortable however and to make them so meant wearing them while walking around wearing the boots meant wearing the thick Wool socks Dave had also prescribed. If you want to get some strange looks walk around your Block a few times wearing heavy Wool socks and hiking Bools a when it s 85 degrees outside tomorrow our first Day on the Trail two to shirts a sweat shirt and a couple pair of pants were All he said we needed. Granted. I spent two thirds of my life As a College undergraduate in the same pair of Blue jeans but i still used to pack two suitcases to visit a Friend overnight. Like the airline stewardess who needed one suitcase just for her creams lotions and Bath oils in a used to packing a lot of Little extras that i just might need like shoelaces in Case mine break a thick novel in Case we got stranded and the family size bottle of Calamine lotion for the Poison Ivy i knew id get. Not Only were All those Little a a extras left off our list there were a few essentials missing nowhere was a hair Brush mentioned although pioneers new Low priced receiver has More of everything losing hair a a a a v a -.?~w.
