Passions were High at the meeting attended by 150 Carolina action members from Raleigh Durham Winston Salem Greensboro and Charlotte the targets of that passion were the state s three utilities companies and the North Carolina utilities commission. The consumer activists attending the meeting sounded their anger again and again Over skyrocketing electric Bills. Macneill Smith of Greensboro opened the session he called for tightening of utilities regulating legislation we be got to Amend the statutes which ensure that Power companies make some kind of magic Smith said. State Law now says utilities should make a fair rate of return on rates of fair value they Are not figures that Are used by the companies in their reports to the stockholders and to the securities Exchange com Mission. Nor Are they figures used by the companies for their lax Smith said Smith also called for the development of a state Power plan by the utilities commis Sion to regulate Hie building of new generating plants.
