Although basically one Story it has a two store Stair Hall Tower in which a studio overlooks the front and the rear. This upstairs room Ideal for a hobbyist is reached by an attractive open spiral Stair that lends a distinctive air to the oversized front foyer. At the same time the Tower gives the exterior of the House the flavor of a French provincial emphasized by the Over All roof lines. Architect Herman h. York has placed the family room so that it is partially hidden on entering the foyer. The formal living room however is wide open to the entranceway As though inviting the occasional guest to proceed in that direction. Old friends of the family and friends of the younger set would quite naturally move toward the family room. For that matter the family will nearly always come in through the garage. Large open views predominate in design l-38. The sizable family room the big Kitchen Are separated Only by a snack bar. And the living room and dining room at the rear have combined dimensions of 31?T by 13. An Ideal setup for entertaining guests. A Beautiful Bay window in tile Kitchen provides space for a table without interfering with the food preparation arca which has the advantage of the desirable a shape Between the family room and adjacent garage Are a Wash up toilet laundry and sewing Corner. The two car garage has a Garden tool storage Corner. In the bedroom Wing. All principle rooms have windows toward the rear Garden. The owners bedroom is As Large As some living rooms with generous space for twin Beds and several pieces of furniture. It has two closets one a walk in Type the private Bath ii split to provide dual use. I e bathing facility is a sunken tub of generous proportions. The Hall Bath is also divided. It is private yet close enough to the front foyer to serve As a guest powder room. With some imaginative ideas the upstairs studio room can be the conversation piece of the House. Interior designing gets a head Start because of the room s location the spiral staircase leading to it and the Balcony. Outside there is Stone at the front Entrance area and Brick around the balance of the House. The Over All appearance is that of elegance in a somewhat informal fashion As though the architect intended to soften what otherwise might be a restrained formal facade. He has succeeded in this goal As Well As providing a liable Home. Statistics design l-38 has a living room dining room Kitchen family room three bedrooms two bathrooms and a Large foyer totalling 2 0 0 5 Square feet. A two car garage has a storage Corner. Tucked Between the garage and the family room Are a laundry room and a lavatory. The upstairs studio room add s 238 Square feet to the Liv Able area. Either they Are finished and panelled and Good enough to live in or they Are left As they Are. In the Iatter Case they become drab dirty and Damp. Even if expensive and elaborate finishing is not for you it is possible to make your basement into a Bright attractive and comfortable place to work and play. All you need is some paint and a Little time to apply it. Once you have cleared the basement for cleaning and painting you May find tha what junk you Don t throw out could be better stored on shelves. Cleaning up ii the first step toward getting organized. Paint will do More than improve the appearance. It will make a basement More dry. Slight moisture and seepage can be halted with heavy duty waterproofing. If you have major seepage done to try to cure it from inside. Proper foundation waterproofing is done on the outside the Only difference Between painting a basement and any other room is to make certain that you Are i in a paint suitable for masonry surfaces. Most modern Latex paints will work Well on masonry but Check the Label to i ? certain. Preparation consists i n cleaning mainly. Major defects or even Small cracks should be repaired before beginning. Vacuum All dust and dirt. A Brush and Clear water will take off quite a bit. Use a detergent if you find stubborn stains. Present coatings that Are peeling or flaking should he take care of a apply masonry Frint with coarse r did ice clean basement then wet Down Latex paints can be rolled scraped off or the new paint will Flake away with the old. If the masonry is new you have a powdery coating on it. This is known As efflorescence. You can coat the Wall with special masonry conditioners to end the problem. You can remove it by scrubbing with one part of Muri Atic acid to five parts of water. Work with rubber gloves and done to splash any in your eyes. Rinse with water and a Little ammonia to get rid of the acid. If there is mildew scrub with household bleach and water. You Mav have to do this several times rinsing with Clear water in Between and allowing to dry each time. Any paint you use must be Alkali proof. It also must be permeable so that some moisture can breathe through it without making it Peel. Aside from Latex paints the likeliest thing to use is a Portland Cement paint. This is dry and must be mixed with water. Check instructions carefully. Such prints normally go on Over unpainted masonry or Over coatings of similar paint. If you want to finish that soaks into the Wood and produces a More subdued effect you use a penetrating resin Oil product. There Are adherents of both types of finishes but if there is anything that is swinging Many persons to the penetrating Oil method it is the ease with which it can be repaired. In most cases All that is required to disguise scratches and other Mars is to apply More resin Oil to the damaged portion and rub lightly. The penetrating finishes come both Clear and in color tones that nevertheless allow the gain to show through. Since even the Clear has a tendency to Darken the Wood slightly test it on an inconspicuous part of the furniture to be sure it is the Shade you want. Penetrating resin Oil must be applied to either raw Wood or Wood from which the previous finish has been removed because its chief characteristic As its name implies is its ability to sink into the pores of the Wood. It is this penetrating feature that gives the finish a resistance to nearly All stains. The penetration naturally is better on Wood with larger pores such As mahogany Oak Walnut Cherry and most Woods used for outdoor furniture. In applying the resin Oil to the surface it is important to follow the manufacturers inst a in ions on How Long it should be left there before starting to wipe. While the time period is about 30 minutes in most cases there Are some variations so read the directions carefully before you Start. These also will Tell you whether second or third applications Are necessary. No thinning of the resin Oil is required. It is applied either by Brush or cloth pad just As it comes from the Container. When you begin to wipe after the recommended period of time be sure that All surface Oil has been removed from the surface. There Are some differences of opinion about How Long to wait before attempting to bring additional Luster to the finish some persons prefer it the Way it i but i have found that at the very least the waiting period should be overnight and preferably 24 hours. You then apply More resin Oil with a clean cloth and rub it Down with a cloth pad. Again being certain that no excess Oil remains on the surface. There Are some persons who believe a Light coat of paste Wax enhances the finish even More but the disadvantage of this is that it must be thoroughly removed if any area must be retouched in the future.
