High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - February 7, 1974, High Point, North Carolina 10b High Point Enterprise thursday february 7,1974 it it amp television log Congress eyeing television coverage by Jay Sharbutt a television writer new York a on feb. 20. A congressional committee will Start hearings that eventually could Lead to live radio and television coverage of those great debates everyone reads about but rarely sees or hears a the verbal wars in the House and Senate Chambers. It s an idea that a kicked around for years yet in this Era of the electronic journalist neither the House nor the Senate is allowing live broadcast coverage of its floor debates. The joint committee on congressional operations which will hold the coming hearings began studying the matter last year. It recently gave Congress a report that to no one s Surprise said when the president Speaks he readily gets National broadcast coverage when Congress Speaks its Impact is frittered away in the broadcast shuffle. It said Congress should explore ways to get its views across More fully to the Public and hopefully fix a Media Access problem that a poses a serious threat to the balance of Powers Between the branches of the National it noted that the president a can routinely present his views to the people directly and in his own on the networks and other broadcast Media but that congressional views filter out through network news organizations usually in highly fragmented form. Despite the report s concern Over the president s ready Access to National broadcast time this won t be the focus of the coming hearings says Gene Peters staff director of the committee involved. A a it san incidental aspect of it but its not the prime purpose of the hearings a he said noting they la cover not Only chamber debate but also committee sessions. A basically what we re looking into is How we Congress can get our message across and Why we re not getting it across a he said. A we also want to know what people in the broadcasting Industry think about what we re doing and How we could improve it. A it s really exploratory to get the ideas together a he said adding that any recommendations the committee makes after the hearings will go to the House and Senate rules committees. A spokesman for sen. Lee Metcalf d-mont., co chairman of the committee said the hearings will be held feb. 20-21 and on March 7 and 12. Peters said he expected the committee would make its recommendations about six weeks after the hearings conclude. 2 i Jujj 1 "j-1,, in i . Hon Nock. ,. 8 Wmk. High Point _. .1 m it i \. Reappointed for three year terms were Donald Yow Ray Hudson and mrs. Howard Ferguson. After its session tuesday night mayor Dawkins said he was still watching the controversial Randleman housing project and trying to decide what to do about it particularly whether the City should take it Over and operate it As a City department. City attorney John Ogburn of Asheboro has been sitting on a Resolution for several months which if adopted by the aldermen would abolish the housing authority Board and permit a City take Over. The mayor threatened in december for the City to take Over the 80 Low rent units if the housing authority continued to have problems in administration. Dawkins since then however has found opposition from at least three of the aldermen to the threatened take Over of the project. He said tuesday night if there is no other Way he will fill the two open seats on the Board with people who will operate the authority As it should be. He said also the term of present authority chairman the Rev. Earl Sibbett is up in june and will give him another Chance to fill the authority with people he feels will run it smoothly.
