High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - February 6, 1972, High Point, North Carolina 14c High Point Enterprise sunday february 6, 1972 Wren its ramblings they serve without any pay a Quot vie s Pim a 4s by Don Wrenn Enterprise staff writer Archdale a some people during the past week have called attention to ramblings of last sunday where it was mentioned members of the Archdale planning Board do not receive any pay for their efforts. Mayor Henry York says several persons mentioned this to him. He said he thought they knew that no one in the City government gets paid that is those elected to office. Most cities do pay their elected officials Small amounts but Archdale office holders pay their own Way of course this started when most of these same people were devoted enough to their Community to give their services without pay for the simple reason there was no Money. They even paid their own Way to other cities to learn How to Best serve Archdale. Now that the City is collecting taxes and does have a Small income the situation answer to today a Puzzle is looking up. The City May soon be in a position to at least pay its representatives when they travel or act for it. A Good example of such Devotion to his Community is attorney Don Miller. If Miller had no had his Community at heart much of the citizens efforts Over the past few year in forming their own City might never have come to being. Miller not Only gave adore with no compensation but when the Effort needed guidance the most he stepped in As chairman and worked hard to carry out the wishes of the citizens. Even for a time after Archdale became a City with an elected Council he had to give a lot of his time and advice with no other compensation than t h e satisfaction he had in knowing he had worked for the Good of his neighbors. Of course to Miller this was Reward enough. There Are Many a a Millers in Archdale the problem facing the City Council however before it votes itself any compensation is whether this is More important than the hiring of a policeman or a City manager. City funds Are limited and there simply is not enough Money to go around but Council members Are going to have to face the problem of bringing in More trained personnel to Aid in resting and carrying out various City programs. A policeman is needed but also needed is a person who can act As a City manager or administrator. In until one or both of these people Are hired there Are few ways to see that cite ordinances Are enforced. Unenforced ordinances Are not Worth the paper they Are written on. So for some time it appears Archdale City officials Are going to have to keep paying some expenses out of their own pockets. A group of Archdale Trinity and area people got together some 22 years ago this month and talked of forming a Lions club. The february meeting led to the formation of the Archdale Trinity Lions. The Lions club held its first charter night on March 3, 1950. Next March 3 the club will be 22 years old. The first president was Lester w. Stevens. Numa f. Reid Lodge no. 344 .
