High Point Enterprise, The (Newspaper) - December 16, 1973, High Point, North Carolina Fans still hungry for a Winner High Point Enterprise sunday december 161973 9c mass confusion leads to decline of Chicago bears a it ask a i Chicago a its really the same team we had a year ago says coach Abe Gibron of the Chicago bears we thought we could turn it around but we didst last year the bears were 4 91 but they were Young when they looked Good during the exhibition season they were immediately labelled a contender by Chicago fans hungry for a Vinner in any sport and even when they dropped their first two Nar Row margins in evenly played games with powerful Dallas and Minnes was Hope then they beat Denver and had what looked like wins Over new Orleans and new England coming up the Only problem was that they lost to new Orleans and new England and despite later wins Over Green Bay and Houston Treyve gone downhill to a 310 record in their last four games Treyve scored a grand total of 21 Points and allowed 127 in losing to Detroit twice los Angeles and Minnesota the result has been mass confusion quarterback Bobby Douglass was booed Early in the season by fans who wanted Gibron to play Rookie Quarter Back Gary Huff Gibron stuck with Douglass until he was injured and Huff has been almost totally ineffective in the last four games Douglass started last sunday against Detroit reinsured his knee and news paper columnists questioned Why he should have been risked in a meaningless game now the target has become Gibron a Gruff but Jovial 300 Pounder who despite the bears record had been extremely popular with fans and the press there have been suggestions that he resign quit that the last thing to come to my mind he says Ive waited 25 years for a head dealing Duke helped rams los Angeles a in his collegiate Days they called Don Klosterman the Duke of Del Rey and two decades later Hes Back As the dealing Duke Don Klosterman was a Star quarterback for Loyola University in his collegiate Days but he plays a far different role now As the executive vice president and general manager of the los Angeles rams the Surprise team of pro football his deals have brought such 1973 standouts As quarterback John Hadl wide receiver har old Jackson defensive backs Charlie Stukes and Eddie Mcmillan and running Back Tony Baker All have been keys As the rams under new coach Chuck Knox have won the National football conference Western division and approach the playoffs it was july 14 1972 when Carroll Rosebloom assumed ownership of the rams having traded the Baltimore Colts for the West coast franchise with him Rosenbloom brought Klosterman who a couple of decades earlier set seven Mcaa passing records playing at Loyola in the Del Rey area of los Angeles Carrolls attitude and Posi Tion when we came in Here was to allow the coaches and every body in the that included the show us their ability and we would stand Back watch and observe said Klosterman the first year that virtually All we did after a 671 season under coach Tommy Prothro the owner obviously was unhappy and thus started the refurbish ing of the rams Carroll said we had to sit Down and really have an honest evaluation of our football team and what had to be done to turn into a Winner Klosterman recalled this mans background in the past 17 years proves he knows what it takes to be a winning football fran Chise he Felt that a coaching change was necessary and we started to interview coaching prospects across the country Klosterman explained that Rosenbloom has always required that a list be kept of assistant coaches who might be come head coaching prospects Don Shula was one of his proteges Chuck Knox was right at the top of our list he had coached the new York jets when i was in the american football league everybody used to be in Awe of the Job he did because he didst have the Best material yet he folded them into a very very respectable offensive line then he went to Detroit and Detroit in those Days was known for defense he took a lot of players that we rent considered that top Quality and he made them into one of the most effective lines in the National football league his work habits were excellent his dedication his Pride and his relation to people he has a cohesive greatness in him the rams also had a prob Lem at quarterback roman Gabriel had been the most valuable player in the nil Only a few years before in 1969 bul had Arm troubles in 1972 along with other physical ailments meanwhile John Hadl at san Diego had asked to be traded i signed Hadl for the chargers when he came out of the University of Kansas and Ive known him Ever since said Klosterman discussing the san Diego Deal where the rams sent defensive end Coy Bacon and running Back Bob Thomas southward Rosenbloom and Klosterman figured on a two quarterback setup the two quarterback system had been very very successful Klosterman said we Felt the system would be Good because of romans Arm and physical condition we we rent certain if he would be All right or not you have to Back yourself up arid get a Quality Quarter Back and that Why we Wen after John then Gabriel became unhappy and demanded to be traded eventually going to Phila Delphia coaching Job even if they fired me id fight it i have no intentions of walking out chances Are Abe will not get fired since he has another year to go on a three year contract and his George a Man who has a High regard for honouring con tracts Gibron is fairly candid about the reasons for the decline he cites injuries and intimates that with losses piling up some players dont work As hard As they would if the team were winning Gibron also says that the losses to new Orleans and new England May have stemmed from the same Lack of Effort we took those teams too lightly he says we thought All we had to do was walk out on the Field to win but they Learned better you cant underestimate anyone in this league then Gibron gets Back to in Douglass to Carl Garrett their Only reliable running Back to linebacker Jimmy Gunn to cornerback Joe Taylor to starting offensive linemen Bob Newton Glen Holloway and Randy Jackson and of course to All pro Middle linebacker Dick Butkus who Hast even dressed for the last four games because of a chronic knee 1 Way pc pick up on j Christmas eve open till 9 pm s 5 Days a week injury that has put his career in question injuries says Gibron at this time of the year everybody is Hurt but there Are Guys who play with hurts and others who dont especially when the team is losing that obvious Ive never rapped a player and i never will there have been statements made that in a failure Well the worst thing i can do now is lose my composure and Start picking on people now the bears Are looking to next year Ive checked with Bleston said Gibron refer ring to the scouting Combine to which the bears belong the top Talent in the draft is encouraging but i dont know How deep it goes and cant say whether or not this figures to be a slim draft As some people say but even in years when the crop has been plentiful the bears have most often come up Short since they last won the nil championship in 1963 their mediocre record has left them in Good drafting position but their picks for one reason or another have failed to make it big the Only exceptions have been the duo of Butkus and Gale Sayers in 1965 and defensive tackle Wally Chambers their first round pick this year who looks like a potential All pro a year ago they had High Hopes for Lionel Antoine of Southern Illinois Antoine has been plagued with injuries be fore that they were High on fullback Jim Harrison and halfback Joe Moore a tandem from Missouri Harrison has been inconsistent and Moore who has been injured has failed to live up to expectations when he has played in 1968 their first pick was Mike Hull a fullback from Souther California they tried to convert him into a tight end and he eventually finished up playing on specially teams Hes doing the same for the Washington redskins today in 1966 their first pick was George Rice a defensive tackle from leu the next year it was Lloyd Phillips a defensive end from Arkansas Neurer have been heard from since their 1969 pick Rufus Mayes was traded to Cincinnati for Harry gunner and Bill Staley who have since departed and their 1970 pick George Farmer is a starting wide receiver who has been complaining for the past two years that nobody Ever throws him the Ball even trades until last sea son have not been helpful but then Gibron mane Vered to get Garrett from new England and tight end Craig Cotton from Detroit for draft choices and still retain a Choice to draft Chambers what does George Halas founder owner president and exc Oach of the bears have to say we have another game to play said Halas to whom a Victory under the most Adverse of conditions is meaningful right now even if i said something it mean anything Only a couple of weeks ago Halas said the bears Are Only three players away from being a Good team but most critics think papa Bear who coached some of the great Bear teams when they earned the nickname monsters of the might have to re evaluate that remark in the same Way Gibron is re evaluating personnel with the injuries to Gunn and Butkus for example the bears have been forced to go with rookies Don Rives and Gail Clark at linebacker if Butkus cant come Back need a new Man in the Middle they need help for Garrett at running Back and their they complain that they would look better with someone to pass them the shown Little and while the pass Rush has improved by Chambers presence the defensive line has shown Little against the running attack go further on less Gas Honda located on interstate 85 i mile North of
