High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - December 9, 1973, High Point, North Carolina Ragsdale cheerleaders give premature Victory sign a we re number one Quot cries fell one Point Short for flying tigers swi photo by Sonny Hedgecock by Howard Hayes Enterprise staff writer Elizabethtown a we did no to get beat. We just did no to Ragsdale football coach Richard Kempis comment Friday night was an appropriate epitaph As the tigers Hope for the state 3-a championship died on the Sandy Field of East Bladen at Elizabethtown. His team had wanted the championship since being knocked out last year in the Semi finals by Tuscola. The coaches and players said this could be the year the offence and defense were More than capable. They had proved their capabilities and desire to win All season. In regular play the defense rolled up an average of 44.6 Points and game while opponents could squeeze an average of Only eight Points from the stingy defense. Last season outstanding wrestlers seek a repeat by Jim Pettit and Carol Wilson Enterprise sports writers High school wrestlers have begun to hit the Mats again in the area and should this season prove to be anything like the last one several local teams should again have outstanding seasons As the combined records of Central Andrews Thomasville and Ragsdale show an amazing 55-9-1 Overall Mark. It took High Point Central coach Pat Withers a couple of years to get the sagging Bison program going but last years 17-1 record was romping stomping proof it had arrived. This year the Bison could be Strong again. Nine Letterman return giving Withers a sound nucleus. A we could be As Good As last year but everyone else is better too a he cautioned. A a we re not As Strong in All weight classes As last year but we can still have a Good season. Once we get some experience in our younger wrestlers we should be Able to match up with eight of the returning Bison Letterman Are seniors 126-Pound Phillip Atkinson the Lone Junior. Several of our Letterman Are improved Over last year too. They be gained a lot of Confidence with their experience. Right now though Many of our kids Are overweight. They re working hard to get their weight the Bison already have a couple of matches under their Belt. A we really did no to look too bad a Withers noted. Coach Mike Lambeth a Andrews red raiders will have to Hustle to improve on the 16-2-1 record of last year but not because of Lack of desire. The same fighting spirit is there it s just that the depth and experience in t. Quot we have five Letterman coming Back a Lambeth noted. A of those four were starters. A Many of our wrestlers have no varsity experience a Lambeth said. A we have a lot of potential but it will be after Christmas before Well be in Good shape. We re real inexperienced in the Light weights and we did t get much help from last year s Jayvee squad 6-4 for the season. Most of our sophomores beat out those be wrestlers on so they had met every Oppon. Ent since Tuscola and had carried Home a Victory each time. A tie May not have been As bad As a loss but you could read no sign of Victory or satisfaction from the faces of the tigers in the locker room. For some of the players there will be another season but not for the teams 14 seniors. They had hoped to say a i played on a state 3-a championship players like quarterback Jeff Sechrest shorty Rickman Erie Wood. Jeff Jones and Mike Halipilias had made an excellent Effort at that claim to High school Fame. Other less mentioned players who silently did their jobs often unnoticed except by players on opposing teams were Scott Clendenin Rusty Garrett Eddie Watts Dan Caldwell Eddie Griffin Matt Gloster Tony Tice Doug Cox and Dennis Mccandless. A i Hadnot seen a team with so Many Little people since East said Kemp. Quot their strength is in their Kemp a two time All american fullback at Lenoir Rhyne said the size of the players bothered him when he first saw his team last year. A i knew if we were going to beat anybody with players that size we would have to be in better shape than they after seeing How the team faced up to the Challenge last year Kemp said a i did t worry about size Kemp said a these kids get along together better than any i be seen. The players attitude toward the game is the Best i be know. They were hungry to in addition to finding Small but eager players when he arrived at Ragsdale Kemp Christmas tourney planned High Point Central will Host the third annual High Point Christmas basketball tournament dec. 27-29. That s not a baseball score nor a boxing breakdown. That a the standing in the High Point Central High Point Andrews basketball series with the raiders one game up. The next one comes tuesday night at Andrews and centrals Bison will be out to avenge a 63-56 overtime loss to the raiders Friday night. It was a Tough hard fought contest with both teams showing moments of Fine team and individual play. There were also moments of ragged play. In Short a typical contest Between two Arch rivals. But How Tough is it to come Back the very next game against the same foe0 a it s hard to say a Andrews Allen Jay s Brown adds height Points Central Andrews rematch tuesday Allen jays Garry Brown practices drive to the Basket staff photo by Mark Austin said a i found an administration willing to support athletics As much As any other program in the school. I found a Community willing to go to work to produce successful football players with its boosters club and individual game Kemp said he has been fortunate to find Good material to work with pointing out that Only one member of his team had to play both ways. A also we have the Best of coaching staffs. They work hard and get along together Well. We met two nights a week during the summer and in addition to regular work during the season we spent about four or five hours together each sunday. A they All came and they All took part a he said of coaches Larry Dunn Jerry Haney Rick Larrick Mike Raybon and Ronnie Wyrick. Kemp said that the coaching staff and the attitudes of the whole school and Community were instrumental in bringing him to Ragsdale. Kemp who graduated from High Point Central said he also wanted to get Back to his and his wife s native area. After graduation from Lenoir Rhyne and working As an assistant coach at West Mecklenburg High at Chr Lotte Kemp went to East Carolina for his masters degree. His first head coaching Job was at East Davidson in 1965, from there he moved East to see tie on so Tiger safety Scott Clendenin listens As defensive coach Rick Larrick gives instructions staff photo by Sonny Hedgec Ocic the additional height does make the slender Brown a More imposing figure but according to the Jaybird coca Tain it Hasni to really affected his play that much. I thought the height would be an advantage a he commented a since i had rebounded fairly Well at 6-2, but it Hasni to made much of a difference that i can luckily for Garry the Quick spurt has not produced any awkward adjustment problems either. A i worked out every Day this summer and played Myca basketball a he said a so the change was gradual and Hasni to affected my timing or it was obvious to All in the Allen Jay gym last tuesday that Browne a shot was not suffering any As the three year Jaybird starter hit with ease against Northwest often striking from Long Range. A a in a used to shooting outside a he said. A a in be never played Down Low although i do like to drive in to the Basket whenever i can. I feel like that a my strongest Point. My main problem is Ball handling. Even when i played guard that one year our other guard did most of the despite his own weakness in that area Brown does feel the Jaybird have two capable floor leaders in guards Keith Marsh and Keith Dillon. A i feel be a Good combination for Allen Jay this a year a he stated. A Marsh is the Best Ball handier we be got and Dillon is the Best passer so they re an effective pair Brown views the Jaybird Overall As having a Good Chance at the Central Carolina conference title. A i think we be made Progress this season a he commented. A a we be played three Tough games against non conference opponents and we were in All of them our biggest loss being by seven Points. At this Point id have to say Ledford and Central Davidson will be the toughest Competition. I hear Ledford a pretty Good and centrals got some should Allen Jay go into the stretch As a top contender the Jaybird will be counting on Brown not Only to provide some scoring punch but also for some of the heavy work on the boards. Although he is not what you a Call a Burly Forward Garry feels he can get the Job done. A it does get pretty rough under the boards some times a he admitted. A but size does no to bother me any i feel like i can hold my experience is one thing that aids Browne a Board play. A three year starter for the Jaybird he began playing organized basketball at age eight and while he has occasionally been diverted by Little league basketball and football Garry said he has a always concentrated on a Golf is about the Only other sport i play now a he stated. A i played some Junior varsity football and baseball in Junior High but basketball has always been whether he will continue to play the sport in College is something Brown has not decided on yet. A i have thought about College a he said. A but id like to. Wait until after this season is Over to so while Brown concentrates on playing basketball for the Jaybird Allen Jay opponents will concentrate on ways to Stop him. He does no to feel however that to Stop carry Brown is to Stop Allen Jay. A i think anybody on the team can score a he commented. A against Northwest Guilford it just turned of hat the Ball came to me. I done to really feel though Zutl have to carry the scoring centrals Roger Hedgecock coach George Foree pondered a i Hope Well be up for the game. This win Friday should give us a boost since it was Over our biggest rival and was a close game too a Foree noted that the raiders Are past the Point of making excuses about Lack of time to get ready for the season. A Johnny Evans is Back with us now and he s had enough time to become settled in we should be on our Way to doing what we re supposed to the raiders were forced to cancel their scrimmage game and played the first couple of games without the services of Evans the team s Point guard. In those games the raiders have shown spurts of brilliance but have also show n lapses and that s proven total against Halifax and Reynolds a in the second half against Central i saw some signs that the team is coming together a Foree added a we started taking advantage of some things but we still Aren t playing a full 32 minutes. We can to keep coming Back in these games. We re going to have to Start jumping ahead and staying there. We done to have any excuses now. We be Andrews George Foree got the people w to can do the Job i be got Confidence in All the players i feel i can Send any one of them into the game and hell get the Job done a Bison coach Roger Hedgecock saw a spirited Effort on his team s part go by the Wayside As the raiders pulled out the contest. Central battled Back from a 12-Point deficit in the third Quarter to take the Lead in the closing minutes. An Andrews steal in the last few seconds set up a foul and Raider guard Willie Williams hit two clutch free throws with four seconds left to knot the game at 50 and Force an overtime. Central was emotionally drained though at the end of regulation play and the overtime was a Mere formality. Bat Hedgecock is confident the Bison will be ready for the rematch. A i think any time you lose a game like that you get exhausted both physically and mentally a he said a but i Don t think Well have any trouble getting up tuesdays game. A the players should be be Central on 5c As a 6-2 Junior Forward carry Brown last season led the Allen Jay basketball team in scoring pumping them in at a 17.0 Points per game clip. After three games in the 1973-74 season Brown is still the Jaybird top scorer but this is a new carry Brown. For one thing he a averaged about 24 Points per game this year including a 31 Point performance against a rugged Northwest Guilford squad. For another Brown is now a 6-4 Forward. A curl lil amp in i a j to cuts ice i he a i grew about two inches Over the summer a he explained. A i had been six feet tall As a Sophomore when i played \ locker room
