High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - August 5, 1976, High Point, North Carolina I2a High Point . Thursday August 5. 1976 Capitol letter minor candidates try to reach . Voters an a analysis editors note Robert a t Ullen who usually writes this column was on temporary assignment out of state i by David r. Nei sen associated press writer Raleigh a despite Ever increasing costs of being elected to statewide political office some people still try win an office without spending huge sums on advertising and Public relations it would be refreshing perhaps. If politics could be As personal As some candidates try to make it with their Low budget campaigns aimed at individually reaching the voters but if the past is an indication of what the future holds these efforts will fail North Carolina s 2 7 million voters present a formidable Challenge which becomes virtually impossible to handle without massive use of radio television and news papers a Case in Point this primary season is the race for Deo Moratick nomination for lieutenant governor. There Are eight candidates three of them falling into the Novice category the three a Katheryn my Backen Ca Brownjr and e Frank Stephenson or a were unknown politically before jumping into the lieutenant governor s race in Many quarters no doubt they Are still unknown each of the three candidates has assumed that meeting people shaking hands speaking to a group or belonging to an organization can be translated into votes those who follow politics generally agree that each of those factors will help but not win an election each of the three has worked hard very Likely harder than some of the Cag dilates the Media generally Call a the serious again it takes More than hard work mrs my Backen has based her Campaign on her association with the order of Eastern Star a women s Branch of the Mason s fraternal organization she served in High office Tor tour years last year being the a Worth grand which is the equivalent of president the three previous years she moved up through other offices of statewide responsibility during each of those tour years she said. She travelled the state visiting hundreds of cities and towns and delivering countless speeches As an officer of the organization but most of her Contact in those years was with fellow Eastern Star members and masons. It also must be noted that several of her opponents Are masons which could tend to weaken her political base Stephenson says he has been running for lieutenant governor Tor three years his base he says is the fact that he travelled the state for to years while recruiting students and athletes for Chowan College in Murphreesboro. He has hundreds of friends statewide and they Are work ing for him he said he also has worked hard saying that is appreciated by the voters a we have built a Good grass roots organization across this state. I m out hustling myself. People like to see you hustle.,?T?T he said. Brown has been using his citizens band radio to Campaign As he drives around the state. He tells fellow cd operators that he s a candidate and asks for their votes he says it works and that he has gained support through the tactic. Such campaigns Are generally run from someone s Home with the Campaign manager usually being a close relative. Contributions Are smaller and fewer than what is received by other candidates. One of the common traps for any candidate is seeing Only what s happening in his own Campaign. He loses sight of the Overall picture and the handshaking circuit because it touches thousands of persons gives a feeling of Success. Also there s the misconception held by Many Novice politicians that being the Only candidate to visit a courthouse or speak to a Small town civic club is tantamount to winning those votes. Not so while these candidates proclaim they Are not professional politicians and say that s what the people want their most serious problem is that most people never get the message. The a professional politician in the View of some novices is someone who has previously held Public office. That experience is generally what gives the a a professional the knowledge to gather effective supporters build a Campaign. Collect the Money get the message to the voters and win an election maybe every candidate in Utopia would be Able to win office without spending Money or having experience but Iii the real world it is difficult if not impossible Varner warehouse and orders mattress company together bring prices Down of the month a High Point store Only top step Ster now 9 99 10-cup stainless steel coffeemaker Ruck Gad on famous Back Cradle extra firm Comfort amp support these Quality features Are yours at great savings.
