Hartley was commenting on the preparations for the Spring Southern furniture Market today. Quot aside from the parking and traffic things work remarkably smooth considering the Large influx of Hartley added a there Are hardly any additional violations of the Law beside parking infractions and possibly a few other traffic Hartley said that the biggest change in the department brought about by the Market was the shifting of some personnel to work in the downtown area surrounding the Market showroom buildings the seven Man tactical unit which generally works an overlapping shift at night and patrols buildings for break ins without having to answer routine patrol complaints from citizens has been switched to a Day shift five other persons assigned to special traffic duty also have been temporarily moved to put 12 persons in the area of the Market showrooms Hartley said that these officers work pedestrian Cross walks in the 200 blocks of s. Main and s Wrenn streets they also work in traffic control and enforce parking ordinances Quot parking is free Quot according to Hartley Quot the Only tickets written for parking involve overtime in the few remaining 15-minute spaces parking in loading zones or stowaway zones and vehicles parked in a manner As to cause a Hazard which also Are towed away at the owner s expense. Quot we have Hundred of cars towed away at the larger markets Quot he said. Quot operators of the markets Are especially cooperative with our according to Hartley he said that preparations Are begun As much As a month in Advance of larger markets with the operators asking what they can do to help police. The Southern furniture Market Center on the East Side of main helps to ease the congestion the week prior to Market when trucks arrive with furniture. Hartley said they have a staging area in a Large lot off e. Green drive where trucks Are sent and then brought to the buildings by radio communication when the docks Are Clear and ready to receive them. The National furniture Mart on the West Side of main uses parking spaces on s Elm Street for trucks waiting turns at the loading Dock to that building Hartley said that traffic and engineering Marks off additional loading zones in the streets around the Market to accommodate the Large furniture trucks. Another parking problem involves the two lots used by City employees and the two lots on either Side of the new municipal building Hartley said that school crossing guards Are used at the entrances of these four lots to Tell out of town furniture men that they cannot use these lots.
