High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - April 21, 1974, High Point, North Carolina Pc High Point Enterprise sunday april 21,1974waiting game almost Over for hopeful nil Sites new York a the waiting game is just about Over. Some time this week Seattle Memphis Honolulu Tampa and Phoenix will find out if Host National football league games. The nil is convening a special meeting Here tuesday to decide whether or not to expand from 26 teams to 28 or possibly 30 for the 1975 season. What was once a list of dozens of potential cities has been narrowed Down to these five by the nil expansion committee which will make its recommendations to the league for the first time on tuesday. The meetings Are expected to run at least three Days. And the likelihood is that if the league does decide to enlarge itself three cities will be left out in the cold for at least a couple of More years. Still it seems pretty certain that the nil is going to a add its first new team or teams since the Cincinnati bengals joined the league in the 1968 season. The educated guess is that two of the five candidates a will get the nod and that it la Cost upwards of $10 million for each franchise. It Cost the bengals owners an entry fee of about $8.5 million. The nil also Points out that there wont be any formal presentations by the five cities nor will the league be talking about which groups Bruins Are wondering about Esposito s skill Boston a the big question in the minds of the Boston Bruins As they prepared for sundays second semifinal playoff game against the Chicago Blackhawk must be a is Tony Esposito really that Good a Esposito brother of National hockey league scoring Leader Phil Esposito of the Bruins was Superb in Chicago a 4-2 Victory thursday. He stopped 46 shots including two spectacular Glove saves on attempts by his brother. A the can to be that Good every time out a Bruins defens Eman Darryl Edestrand said. A the Bubble has to burst. It can to last Esposito did no to think he had a particularly difficult game. A i did no to mind the 48 shots a he said a there weren to that Many Tough Edestrand who scored the Bruins second goal to briefly tie the game agreed with the Chicago net minder. A quite a few times we put the puck where he could catch it where he could use his Glove which is his style a Edestrand said. A what we have to do is shoot at closer Range make him go Down and scramble a Little. If we re shooting too far out he can use that Glove of Bobby Schmautz of Boston Wasny to impressed with the Black Hawks performance. In the opening game. A Chicago did no to play Well a Schmautz said. A we had too Many you give up the puck As much As they did and give up As Many shots As they did your team can to be playing that coach Bep Guidolin of the Bell inks 2 for Wal Philadelphia apr six players three from Slippery Rock pa., state have been signed by the Philadelphia Bell of the world football league. The club announced saturday contracts for safety Terry Factor and guards Hurt Krai and Fred starched All from Slippery Rock. The Bell also signed Mike Bartik a wide receiver from Furman Tom Zakowski linebacker from West Virginia and Pete Horozanko offensive guard from Virginia tech. Bruins was optimistic though. A if we play sunday the Way we played thursday Well win a he said. A a we re not Down. One individual beat us. A a Here a a team we Haven to beaten All season and maybe they re thinking they be got us that no matter what they do we can to beat them a Guidolin said. A a we re not telling ourselves Mike Veiser Chicago a backup goalie described Esposito As a a four by six Brick Wall. He was just games three and four Are scheduled to be played in Chicago next thursday and saturday. Slugger wins Narragansett Pawtucket . Apr Southern slugger took the featured $7,500 Warwick Handicap at Narragansett Park saturday by three lengths Over motor ting to $9, $4.80 and $2.80. Ridden by Robert Martin Southern slugger ran the six furlongs in 1 113-5 before a crowd of 8,233. Motor ting paid $8.20 and $4.20. Coming in third last dance returned $2.20. Maryland red team takes win College Park my. Apr Maryland quarterback Bob Avellinna completed 24 of 32 passes for 373 Yards to Lead the red team to. A 28-20 win in the annual Spring football game at College Park. Maryland coach Jerry Claiborne said afterwards a it was a Fine Spectator game and i enjoyed watching it from the press the game culminated Spring practice. Claiborne said a Overall we had a pretty Good Spring. The passing game had not looked As Good As it did today. However Avellinna and Walter White have the ability to pick a defense apart. A the defense was hampered a Little bit by some of the restrictions on what they were allowed to do. I thought Avellinna threw real Well and White and John Schultz caught the Ball White caught eight passes for 183 Yards while Schultz caught seven for 76 Yards. Avellinna threw to times on the opening 12-play drive with Dan Decarlo scoring on his seven Yard reception. Avellinna scored the third touchdown for the red team with a dive from the one. Get a Chance to old for franchises. Only the cities themselves Are being considered. Although nobody a willing to admit it the a Fly a club a owners votes from 20 of the 26 Are needed to approve expansion will have the a world football league in mind when the talks begin. That could work favourably for one City and negatively for another. When the Wal announced plans to put a team in Memphis the City politely told the new league to take a walk saying it was holding out for an nil franchise or nothing at All. If say Memphis and another candidate Are rated even in All other categories Memphis stand could be a deciding Factor. On the other hand Honolulu already has a Wal team the hawaiians. And the nil May not be willing to go head to head and possibly into court with the Wal. In 1960, in an unsuccessful attempt to Knock the american football league out of business the nil expanded to Dallas an Al City. Three years later the Al pulled out moving to Kansas City. This time though things May be different. A if the nil established a franchise in Honolulu overnight to put the Wal out of business a Merlin Olsen of the a Fly a los Angeles rams said a i think the players association would and the nil owners have enough player problems As it is right now losing dozens of them to the new league and being embroiled with the a Flea in widely split contract talks. The prospects of Honolulu joining the league Are dimmed a bit More by the City a ?location?3,000 Miles or so from the closest nil team and 6,000 from new York Philadelphia Washington and the rest of the East coast teams. If the alleged Energy crunch and the time spread up to five hours have anything to do with it Hawaii could be just too much of a haul for the nil. Finally Honolulu according to the 1970 census the most recent has the smallest a drawing Power of the five potential cities with a metropolitan population of about 650,000. Not that the City Hasni to got positive things to offer. Its in a temperate climate it already got a stadium with another one planned. Honolulu stadium the scene of the annual Hula bowl College All Star game seats 26,000 and the proposed. Halawa stadium in the Pearl Harbor area would seat 50.000. But every other City in the running also has a stadium available or planned or both. Seattle with its 1.4-million metropolitan population is a wide open territory. It has a pretty wet climate but its also got the King dome under construction. The indoor stadium will seat 65,000 and if its not quite ready for the 1975 season the 58,000-seat University of Washington stadium is available. Phoenix like Seattle is untouched territory. Its got a drawing area of about one million. The City says it la build an 80,000-seat stadium if it gets a franchise and that until it is completed the 52,000-seat Sun Devil stadium of Arizona state University May be available. Memphis with a regional population of about 800,000, has already hosted several preseason nil games and they be drawn pretty Well. The 50,164-seat Memphis memorial stadium would be expanded to 73,000 seats if the City gets the franchise. Like Memphis Tampa with a metropolitan population of More than a million which could draw from St. Petersburg and Orlando As Well is a warm weather City which has hosted nil exhibition games. The la games have each drawn about 40,000 fans. And the 46,477-seat stadium is ready for expansion to 71,000 seats. through Martin Stour Tho warm Rich colors of colonial Williamsburg captured and exactly matched in exterior and Interior Fin lakes of utmost Quality.
