High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - April 10, 1974, High Point, North Carolina 14c High Point Enterprise wednesday april to 1974 Eastern to add triad flights to your Good health by Jim Hawkins Enterprise staff writer Eastern air lines will provide at least two additional flights outbound from the regional Greensboro a High Point a Winston Salem Airport for the approaching Southern furniture Market which opens in Piedmont North Carolina next week. John Larsen manager of passenger and cargo sales Here made the announcement monday during a meeting of local civic and governmental officials and Eastern airlines officials. Larsen said later the two flights Are planned for april 24, a wednesday a Day which traditionally sees Many of those visiting the area for the Market begin their trips Home. He said other flights would be added if they Are required and if aircraft Are available. He also said that in the past additional coming flights have been arranged through other cities. One of the additional flights will leave the regional Airport at 11 15 a.m., Stop in Washington and go on to new York City to reach there by 1 33 . The second will Fly non Stop from the regional Airport at 4 15 . To Newark and reach there at 6 03 . At the meeting held at the Albert pick Motel near the regional Airport Eastern airlines told representatives from High Point Greensboro and Winston Salem of plans to increase the level of service starting May i. Don Mcguire director of the company s government affairs said the new schedules will see increases in service to Chicago Atlanta Boston and St. Louis. Mcguire said the changes will mean multiple non Stop daily services to four major markets new York Chicago Atlanta and Washington As Well either non Stop or one Stop service to other heavily used destinations. Noting that the changes Are being made in the face of Oil Supply and Cost problems Mcguire said the Cost of fuel this year is expected to increase by $100 million a figure which represents about one half the profits of the entire Industry last year. He said a fare increase of about six per cent to help cover the Cost of fuel increases is expected to help some. Airline officials said later that in some cases Jet fuel has increased from 13 cents to 40 cents a gallon. The Cost of fuel has become a critical Factor in airline operations Mcguire said. Those attending the luncheon heard Stanley Frank chairman of the Greensboro a High Point Airport authority emphasize that his Agency will a not tolerate poor Frank also emphasized the need for a separate group to help to coordinate scheduling by air lines to eliminate the possibility that two lines might remove service from the same Market thus leaving a major void. The discussion included the possibility of using the new Large 250-seat aircraft at the regional Airport but officials said this would restrict frequency of flights.
