Evants and a. Ragsdale. Noah Taylor and Jas. Carter were appointed bailiffs. After giving instructions to the grand jury As to their duties the judge retired them and the tiresome task of obtaining a jury to try the Thornton murder Case brought Here from Briscoe county was begun. The jury As finally chosen composed of the following named gentlemen w. T. Ross w. R. Evants c. L. Bounds t. R. Reagan w. S. Higgins c. T. Splawn j. E. Ferguson t. A. Fox j. W. Bradly w. H. Clary r. R. Harris and c. E. Wheeler. Jack Harwell was appointed to act in sheriff j. T. Inmond a place on account of the latter a illness. The counsels for the state were District attorney Ira Webster of Claude g. F. Thomas of Bowie d. B. Hill of Clarendon and Browning amp Madden of Amarillo. Messes. Kinder amp Wilson of Canyon Plemons amp Veale of Amarillo j. N. Stalbird and w. F. Kelly of Silverton defended the prisoner. This Case was tried twice before a once at Claude and once at Tulia a and resulted in a Hung jury in both instances. The arguments before the jury by the different counsels followed and at 5 45 of clock on thursday the i judge made an impartial charge to the jury and the jury retired. At 2 45 p. In. Friday the jury j filed out into the court room and Foreman Ferguson announced that they had agreed upon a verdict which was that the defendant was guilty of manslaughter and fixed the penalty at two years in the Penitentiary. For reasons stated elsewhere we refrain from commenting further on the Case or the verdict. There was one other Case on the criminal docket that of the state is. W s. Dean. The Case was dismissed on motion of the state for reasons filed. In the civil docket the following cases were disposed of the Case of the state of Texas is. W. P. Wright it a1., was discontinued.
