National representatives Jane a Kelley inc. New York a Chicago a Detroit a Atlanta san Francisco a los Angeles better Farmers on sound basis a Survey by the american farm Bureau federation reveals that 90.9 per cent of the total american agricultural production is credited to approximately 2,101,842 of the 4.783,000 Farmers in business in 1954. Thus the 2,800,000 Small Farmers produced less than to per cent of the total products of farms. John j. Lacey director of press relations for the federation feels that considering current surpluses the 2,100,000 obviously efficient Farmers could produce All the agricultural products we need. The federation places Farmers in Ai classes based on Gross value of products. In 1954, there were 134,003 Farmers in class one with Gross production of $25,000 or Mere. There were 448.945 in class two with $10,000 to $24,999 total output 706,929 in class three with $5,000 to $9,999 Gross 811.965, producing from $2,500 to $4,999. Those Are the four groups that produced 90.9 per cent of the total farm production. In class five there were 763,348, who produced Only 5.7 per cent of the National total. Their incomes from Gross varied from $1,200 to $2,499 a year. In class six there were 162,000 with Gross of $250 to $1,199, accounting for Only 1.4 per cent of the National total. Obviously those in classes five and six were not making a Good living from agriculture. Of course some of them had farms near places of employment so that farming did not account for All their income. But the majority depended on farming As the Basic Means of making a living. In four years from 1950 to 1954, 132,000 class five farms went out of business. So did 245,637 class six Farmers. Federation figures show there were 599,141 fewer farm units in 1954 than in 1950. The next farm census probably will show thousands More of the class five and six Farmers have Abon done agriculture. The federation has exhaustive statistical material to show How the better Farmers operate efficiently to stay in business while the smaller and less efficient operators Edge far Down the production schedule. For instance in 1954, the class one Farmers had sales averaging $29.89 an acre. The class six average was $7.79 an acre. The federation Survey shows very clearly that there is a Sharp dividing line Between the efficient farm unit and the losing classes. As farming has become just As exacting As any business the inefficient operators May expect to fail unless they accept modern trends. A great Deal of the political pressure to help Farmers come from the inefficient groups. At a recent conference with Secretary of agriculture Benson federation officials were told the Secretary planned to eliminate some fringe payments to Farmers. One was to Stop payment for cutting weeds. When the plans not to pay Farmers for cutting weeds became known congressmen got Busy to insist such payments continue. Most observers think that any Fanner who is dependent on Federal pay for cutting his own weeds is not on the Way to a great Success in agriculture. But that is an example of Federal paternalism that is being retained. Within the next decade it is possible the total of american farms will continue to drop rapidly. By 1967, the 2,000,-000 or so Good Farmers probably will Supply most of the produce even though the population increases by 3,000,000 or so each year. Improved farming methods have a Way with keeping abreast of increasing population. In fact farm surpluses loom for Many years ahead despite More Mouths to feed. Hard to read with that Light so far away rainfall nothing is More Welcome than a heavy and somewhat prolonged rainfall on a summer Day especially after a Long dry spell.
