A couple of months ago Don Springmeyer said the knights of St. John wanted to find the family members of the original charter members and asked if i d be willing to help find them. The St. George commander no. 31 was chartered in 1886 and installed at St. Mary s Church on May 30, 1890. The weekend of june 2 and 3 will be the Celebration of the Knight s too years. On june 3rd, at the noon mass these family members will be asked to so on the front two rows in St. Mary s. I was unable to find a Complete list of the charter members so went with the charter members who held office during that first year too years ago. The members who held office were Leopold Spitzmesser president Edward Kessing first vice president John e. Stier second vice president Rev. Steigerwald spiritual advisor Clement Kessing recording Secretary Anthony Habig financial Secretary Edward Kessing commander John Hannon first lieutenant Charles Tumilty second lieutenant Pat Smith daily news columnist and John e. Stier Edward Kessing James o Donnell Joachim Stier and Leopold Spitzmesser trustees. Generally in be listed the names of the closest relatives living in Decatur county. Without question with a project like this some names will be left out but the important thing is that the families of the above men hear about the Celebration and let the knights know of their connection with the founders. This was fun for me because it turned out that i knew members of most of the families. The names Are Leopold Spitzmesser Ethel widow of Joe and daughter in Law of Leopold is still living in Columbus. Edward had a son Oliver who became a commander in the Navy a son Robert l. And a son Moffett an interesting fact is that Edward was elected county recorder in 1874 when he was too Young to vote for himself. The election was held in nov. And he was t 21 until the next March. He later had a dry goods store on the Square and eventually was appointed statistician of the Bureau of Commerce for this District. He died in 1943. John Hannon i could find nothing at All about him. Anthony Habig in younger years he worked with his father operating the Grain business in the old Woolen Mill at the Comer of main and Lincoln streets. He went into real estate in 1897 but is probably Best remembered As owner of a Cha big so dry goods store on the South Side of the Square. His daughters Marguerite and Velma operated the store later.
