In the affidavit filed in the Putnam court upon which the arrest of based named his 12-year old daughter As the object of Hie attentions. Somewhat of a picture of the activities of the Putnam circuit court a luring the Calendar year just closed is presented in the report of the Deputy clerk of the court. Roger Morrison. The statement is addressed to the department of Commerce Bureau of the census at Washington. One item that is unexpectedly Large is the number of entries made upon the docket during the year either by judge Courtland c. Gillen or any other judge setting in a special capacity upon the Putnam Bench. The court during that period made 2,248 separate entries. These were on the three dockets 1,055 entries on the civil 304 on the criminal and 889 on the probate. There were 241 original cases filed during the year of which 62 involved contracts 9 automobile damages 8 Railroad. 33 others in tort. 16 in ejectment. 28 foreclosure. 11 supplemental to execution 10 to quiet title. 2 receiver cases 63 involving divorce and 4 cases of Replevin. A total of 19 were brought Here from other counties on a change of venue and one Case was appealed from a Justice of the peace court. The report shows that 279 cases were disposed of. Of these 78 had judgments rendered by default 4 had trial by jury 90 had trial by the court 6 were tried by a special Niu nity with which they judge 7 were venue to other counties and 94 were dismissed of which latter 18 were connected with divorce proceedings. The great majority of the number of cases brought to this court from other counties contrasted with the number sent from this county is very noticeable. Set Over against the 185 marriage licenses issued during the year is the total 58, of divorces granted the number of divorces being a Little More than 31 per cent of the number of marriage licenses. The wife received 39 of these decrees of separation and the husband 19. The criminal docket was Light this year and it would have been much lighter yet if it were not that into the Putnam court Are brought the men who have escaped from the Indiana state penal farm and have been recaptured. They Are amenable to the statute enacted to cover this situation making it a criminal offence to escape from the penal farm regardless of the nature of the offence for which the men were sent to the institution originally. There were 101 defendants disposed of in criminal proceedings and 26 of these were escaped from the farm. They Al pleaded guilty. Committee resumed task of working out permanent Relief policy Washington Jan. 11. It up it a House appropriations sub committee prepared today to fight president Roosevelt on two Relief issues and to attempt to pass by late Friday a $725.000,00 Bill for continuing the works Progress administration until july 1. As has been expected a request for More Money for Relief Precipitat-1 de the new session s first Duel Between Congress and the president. The sub committee headed by rep. Clifton a. Wood rum a. A. Drew first blood by cutting $150,000.000 from i. Roosevelt a request for $875.000.000 to keep approximately 3.000.000 unemployed at work until the end of the current fiscal year. It scored a second time by defying his executive order to put 33.000 spa administrative employees under civil service and providing that no Relief funds be use i to pay them. Although the full appropriations committee expected to meet today has authority to reject the subcommittees recommendations. It usually accepts its proposals. If such is the Case. House leaders plan to bring the Bill to the floor thursday and seek a final vote Friday. Despite the sub committee s defy. Or. Roosevelt was Quick with a counter thrust. Shortly after the committees action he was asked at his press conference to comment on the $150 000.000 Cut. He invited news men to find out How Many Relief workers would have to be drop be 1 if Congress insists on the reduced appropriation. He said he had to think in terms of human lives. Col. F. Harrington spa administrator. Presented such figures at secret hearings of the Suh com Mitten. Which will be published tomorrow. Figures presented by the workers Alliance which asked for an appropriation of $1.050,000 000. Indicated the Cut would result in the discharge of 665.000 persons feb. 1. Rep. Jerry Voorhis a. Calif., estimated the number at approximately $500,000. Fixing of the amount of the Relief deficiency however took Caro of Only one phase of the Relief problem. The Long Range task of working out a permanent Relief policy was resumed by the Senate committee on unemployment and Relief headed by sen. James f. Byrnes a. S. This committee is considering a four Point program 1. A formula for distribution of Relief funds. Byrnes favors allocation on a straight population basis a method to which others object because of the belief that state unemployment and living costs must be weighed. 2. Coordination of the unemployment services of the labor department and the social Security Board not Only to furnish private Enterprise with workers but to provide a constant Check on unemployment. 3. Coordination of All agencies handling Relief work and Security programs. 4. Standardization of unemployment compensation to provide a minimum pay during Layoff byrncs favors shortening the period which now averages six weeks before a worker thrown out of a Job May draw unemployment compensation. The House committees action in seeking to prevent application of civil service Laws to spa administrative employees also is part of a Long Range program designed to insulate Relief against politics. It was reportedly because of the unwillingness of some House members to see perpetuated in offic spa employees accused of employing the Relief organization politically. 20 years ago in Greencastle Charles Huffman of the Hanna furniture store returned from a visit with his daughter at Tulsa okla.
