Among the Busy persons in Putnam county and in Greencastle City these last few Days Are the agents of institutions or organizations which own property which they believe is exempt under the Law. From assessment for taxes. Petitions for exemption have been filed by the fiscal agent of Depauw University for instance on a number of pieces of property owned by the University in the City or outside the City but in the county which apparently should be taxed but which it can be shown Are not producing Revenue to the institution. This list of the University includes some City or commercial place lots which Are unimproved and which of course Are not Revenue producing and. Also there Are City lots with improvements which Are not rented but which Ere used for University purposes and which Are tax exempt. However on properties such As these petitions for tax exemption must be filed each year. The 1937 Indiana statutes Section 1. Chapter 295, contains the provision under which these exemptions Are asked. It says a be it enacted by the. General Assembly of the state of Indiana that on or before the first Day of March of each year any persons corporation fraternal society or the agent of any such person corporation or fraternal society which shall own. Operate or otherwise manage any real estate or tangible personal property. The whole or any part of which is believed to be exempt from the payment of tax. By reason of any Law concerning the exemption of real estate or tangible personal property owned and operated by or on behalf of any educational charitable religious fraternal or literary society or any association organized for scientific purposes shall file with the auditor of the county in which such property is at the Putnam county Auto License Agency tuesday morning it was stated that the sales of 1939 plates have reached a total of Only 2,700 leaving 1.900 sets of plates yet on hands in the Agency. March 1 is the dead line and it is useless for automobile and truck owners who have not yet Purchase i their plates to expect an Extension of that time it was stated at the Agency. It a was the belief at the Agency that the proposal to establish a $1 Cost for License plates in a Bill now before the legislature is responsible for the delay in disposing of the remainder of the plates. The idea has become prevalent that the proposed rate of $1 would become a Law and would be effective at once so that 1939 plates not yet secured could be bought for $1. However such an impression is without foundation in fact. The proposed new rate is not Law. And May not be and anyway even if it were to become a statute it will not be effective until 1940. Last year it was said at the License Agency there were but 500 sets of plate3 unsold at this time. The 500 last year supplied the demand during the remainder of the year just As the 1,900 on hands now will Supply the demand during the remainder of this year. However the sales to Date Are approximately 1,400 behind those of last year at a corresponding time.
