Thank you with the Observance and official proclamation of Arbor Day recently the Borough of Arendtsville is on its Way to becoming Adams county s first tree according to resident Barbara Martin the tree City Usa Prog ram is designed to recognize those communities that effectively Man age their Public tree resources and to encourage the implementation of Community tree management based on four tree City Usa standards. One of those standards Calls for an Arbor Day Observance and proclamation which took place at Arendtsville elementary school on May 4. During the Arbor Day festivities the children presented poems and stories about Trees heard the offi Cial proclamation from mayor Earl Kuykendall and then planted a tree in their schoolyard with the help of David lower from Beyer s Nursery mrs. Martin has pointed out to the children that by planting Trees they Are becoming air Farmers because the Trees generate oxygen. The second Standard that the town must accomplish is a Community tree ordinance that designates the tree Board or department and gives them the responsibility for writing and implementing the annual Community forestry work plan. According to literature the Ordi Nance should determine Public tree care policies for planting maintenance and removals. It should also make provisions for establishing and updating a list or recommended Street tree species to be planted with spacing and location requirements. Mrs. Martin explained that the Borough will be reviewing the Ordi Nance at their next meeting. Another Standard Calls for a Community forestry program with an annual budget of at least per Ca Pacita. Communities often begin their program by taking an inventory of the Trees growing on Public property. The species location and condition of each tree Are noted and the inventory Date is summarized in a written report for presen tation and approval by the Borough Council. With the Community tree Plant ing program Arendtsville will be working on a municipal Shade tree restoration program. Under this program meted will give the town 50 Trees while Penn state s Forest technology Center will set guide lines for planting maintenance. The Pennsylvania department of forestry will also do an inventory of Trees and give the Borough planting advice. Another Standard that must be met to become a tree City is the establishment of a tree Board or department. This department consists of a group of concerned Citi Zens that develop and administer a comprehensive Community tree management program for the care of Trees on Public property. The tree City program is made possible through the National Arbor Day foundation in cooperation with the . Forest service and the National association of state forests. Arendtsville will also be making their Square Green with the use of Flowers and shrubs. Through the donations of Cash from businesses service clubs and private individuals the town has purchased plan ters soil Stone and shrubs. The Flowers donated by Taylor s Green House will be planted by a local girl scout troop. According to mrs. Martin plans for the future include raising donations to landscape the Borough of fice building and possibly a Small Park bulletin Board and memorial for veterans. Donations for these projects Are Welcome.
