Galveston Daily News (Newspaper) - November 21, 1986, Galveston, Texas Texas Outdoors OUTDOOR NEWS WITH BECKER JR By A JR News Outdoor Editor KEEP WHAT you and your friends can utilize but return the rest to the water as soon as thev are caught J The fish that this column is about is under neither a bag limit nor size restrictions This fish is in good supply The fish of discussion is the sand trout and this current ly is the time of the year when this fish a cousin of the larger and more regal speckled trout can be found almost anywhere one casts a baited hook If the species is not under regulations and the population isnt in danger why bother with keeping only what can be utilized Why not just pop the others into the freezer for use at some future time Youve heard about separating the men from the boys Freezer storage is what separates sand trout from speckled trout You can freeze sand trout thaw them and cook them but be prepared for meat with the consistency of mashed potatoes The sand trout just doesn t freeze worth a hoot For that matter speckled trout ThjLOutdoor s man Sand trout small fish but are sporty to catch Friday Morning November OJfje SalurBton BaiiD 3euiB 5R arent the best of fish to store in a freezer The meat is tender to start off with and prolonged storage of frozen speckled trout isnt recommended because it tends to break down the texture of the meat and it will soften consid erable when it thaws It wont become mushy as is the case with sand trout but it wont be nearly so tasty as freshcaught fish This doesnt mean you have to eat sand trout the same day you catch it The fish can be kept fresh several days if properly cleanedand then placed on ice Its because sand trout cant be kept frozen that so many of these fish are wasted Hence fishermen ought to return to the water fish they cant utilize within say the space ofseveral days A LOT OF FISHERMEN look down their noses at sand trout True it doesnt grow as big as speckled trout and it is less desireable as tablefare It is nevertheless a fish that can pro videsport on light tackle The fish readily takes artificial lures and during the cold months of the year it is often the only fish available in considerable numbers The sand trout has a lot of the traits of speckled trout the most commendable being the fact that sandies are often caught under the birds They may be cursed when theyre mixed in with schools of speckled trout but there are numerous occasions this time of the year when the only fish work ing under birds are sand trout Sandies readily strike the same artificial lures that speckled trout take Sand trout hit hard often hard enough to set the hooks themselves but they dont have the stamina of speckled trout Hence the overall fight of a sand trout is considerably less than that of a similar size speckled trout When it comes to catching san dies on natural bait they are less expensive to fish for than speckled trout When it comes to natural bait live shrimp are a must for speckled trout You can do equally well catching sand trout by using fresh dead shrimp When the sandies are schooled up it is not uncommon to catch two at the same time when fish ermen use double drop hook stag ings Sandies are a lot of fun to catch but there is no point in keeping more than you can use in the space of a couple of days Staff photo by Jim Cruz Winter Boat Cut and a number of redfish were taken at the south jetties One boat came in from offshore with about 400 pounds of red she add ed synod of cardinals and a dash of cheetahs These are suggestions that the editors of International Wildlife magazine received after they an nounced a contest last summer for naming groups of animals Readers responded with hundreds of inventive new names to the magazine that is published bimon thly by the National Wildlife Fed eration The custom of naming groups of animals began in the 15th Cen tury when noblemen needed a special nomenclature for the wildlife they hunted Many readers sent in sugges tions reflecting their attitudes toward a particular species Thus a group of cockroaches became variously an embarrassment an eternityand a repugnance Some readers specialized in certain kinds of wildlife A Con necticut man restricted himself to birds as follows An outfield of flycatchers fleet offriga tebirds A choir of hunningbirds An addition ofjuncos A bosom of titmice One of the more original collec tions was sent in by Jean M Auel author of the bestselling novel The Clan of the Cave Bear Al though she is famous for her knowledge of prehistoric animals her suggestions were strictly modern A stretch of mussels Aduelofswordfish A clip of hedgehogs In their enthusiasm for the corf test some readers reached beyond wildlife and suggested names for groups of people A pride of egotists A lot of realtors An order of waiters A cell of biologists A dose of pharmacists Among the other names submit ted here are a few of the editors favorites A union of carpenter bees A syndica te ofkWer whalkes A ba ttery of electric eels A masquer a de ofra ccoons A congrega tion of church mice f A snifter of bloodhounds A beaker of toucans A
