January 30, Make Mine Country Chet Atkins Is RCA Records President, Star ByLEONETHKHXJE His friends call him Chester, though Chet Atkins' title is vice president of RCA Records. Chet is a most beloved man in Nashville. 1 know fir- sthand how kind he can be to a new talent. 1 produced a young artist back in 1952. but nothing happened on that particular session. Some five years later, we had a hit with the song this young man wrote. In the meantime, he moved from Birmingham to Nashville and began playing bass in Printer's Alley with Hank Garland. Somehow he came to the attention of Chet, who took a liking to him. Needless to say. he is today one of Nashville's top musicians, playing sometimes three sessions a day. He has travelled all over the world playing with Chet on his concert tours. This young man's name is Henry and 1 know he will ever br grateful to Chet for friendship. Henry is >..jw president of October Records in Nashville. Chet Atkins is recognized as one of the greatest guitarists in the world. He has played concerts in every major city in the United States, as well as Carnegie Hall and with the Boston Pops Symphony. He is self taught on the guitar. He has had no formal lessions. His albums have sold more than any other guitarist in the history of the recording industry. Not only is he a great artist, but Chet is one of the inventors of the "Nashville and I would say responsible for the multi-million dollar recording industry in Nash- ville. Today's artists Chet discovered and made stars of are the late Jim Reeves, Bobby Bare, Connie Smith, Porter Wagoner. Dolly Parlon. Skeeter Davis. Waylon Jennings, The Browns, Dottie West, Floyd Cramer, Charlie Pride and many more. 1 salute a great artist, great producer, great gentleman, Chet Atkins. Chefs latest album is "Great Moments of the Grand Ole Opry" on RCA featuring Jim Ed Brown, Sonny James, Minnie Pearl, Dolly Parton and Porter Wagoner. COUNTRY NOTES: October Records is servicing all DJs with Diane Minor's "Lay Some Country on This Country Girl." It looks very promising...October artist, Lloyd Green, is on the charts with his version of "You and Lee goes on a cross country tour the last of this mon- th....Kenny Rogers latest release is and it is really getting the air- play... There is plenty of talk about Glen Campbell's new single "Southern and lots of the talk is negative.....If you like Sammi Smith, take a listen to her latest, "Lovin' Arm- s." It's great.....Sonny James is set to appear on an upcoming Donnie and Marie show on ABC. If you remember, it was Sonny who produced Marie's first record, "Paper Roses." Sonny's latest release is "You're Free To A new Texas artist, Joe Ely, has a new record out called "All My 1 record in Houston this week is Eddie Rabbit's "Two Dollars in the Smith comes up with another hit with "1 Just Came to Count the Memories" .....Claude Gray is on the charts again with "We Fell In Love That Music Academy awards has been reset 17 and will be on ABC TV Feb. 24.....Didya know that Donna Fargo was a school teacher before she recor- ded "Happiest Girl in the Whole We get mail! Premier Mamdouh Salem said the unrest was engineered by Communists and aimed at replacing Sadat's government with a Communist regime. In a surprise address to labor union leaders, Sadat said the objective of. the rioters was to "overthrow the government regime by means of creating panic and burning down Cairo. "The time came when be tolerant about this? Never. Otherwise, I would have betrayed the trust of the people... "Not a single one of them (the rioters) will be allowed to Sadat said. "And this matter (the disturbances) will never be allowed to happen again, whatever the c i r- cumstances." But Sadat made it clear this did not mean a going back on his policies of liberalization and democratization. Salem also accused the National Progressive Unionist Rally, one of three political parties legalized last year, of direct in- volvement in the unrest. every citizen felt he said.
