Fort Wayne Weekly Breeze (Newspaper) - May 30, 1895, Fort Wayne, Indiana Joe Ute Elij Greefs. Eita Bli hed in j.869. John i. Aim a Jill proprietor. L cd Itsuki weekly at the Breeze building Mollok Yillik. Ind. Entered at the Post ofic at Monroeville Indiana As second class matter thursday May 30ui, 1895 the past week two of the nations greatest and worthy statesmen Walter q. Gresham and the Hon. Hugh Mccullough have passed to the unknown world at their Homes in Washington i. C. Tie former Wras at one time Indiana a leading statesman while the latter stood highest in rank in Allen county. It is with deep regret that we mention the death of both hut with the greatest in that of judge Mccurl Jongh. So kit was lie that gave the editor of the by Kizk the first Dollar and encouraging words As to out in life when we were acting in tie capacity of his a Miry Carriage Driver and servant boy. Way Mick in the years of 1800 Ai d up to the time when he took his departure with his a Miry from fort Wayne to Washington to assume his duties As Secretary of treasure in Lincoln a Cabinet. The Nicholson Hill will go in Force about the 3.5th of june. Already thousands of dollars Lias been and is being raised in this state and other states by Saloon keepers and liquor dealers to fight the Law and if possible wipe it out of existence. The Law is one that will be of Benefit to the people and every City and a great injury to the liquor traffic and Well is this fact known. It is hoped that the Good _ citizens throughout the state will stand shoulder to shoulder and see that the Law is kept in Force and assist the officers in enforcing it. There is no supreme District or circuit court judge or any other officer that has any Honor at stake that dare ignore the desires of the people As was indicated by the numerous petitions from Good citizens and Many a Man that tips the flowing cup to his lips that Ere presented to our last legislature to have the Bill passed. No Good Law abiding Salon keeper is heard to utter a word against the Bill. It is Only that class who have no respect for themselves and the liquor dealer who Well knows that they will be Cut Short in their sales. There Are Many saloons that should be closed the proprietors Are men who swill twp As much if not More of the a slope than their customers and will sell to a suckling babe rather than give the child a drink of water. Especially should the Nicholson Bill be in Force to protect these children from the fact that daily has the writer noticed boys whose age Range from nine to Twenty one entering the saloons of Monroeville and Are permitted to remain and no doubt Are permitted to play games and drink some kind of intoxicating drinks. Again should the Law be sustained to prevent the outrageous habit of some of our saloons Selling on sunday to such extent that their patrons stagger about tie streets. Which vender it is we Are not Able to slate but i is certain that some one keeps open or allows a ii Reat amount of sliding in the bind a Vay. P. S. From a Tio new Albany Tribune. Those letters perked up there May stand for a great Many things l ants factory or poultry farm for instance. But i have put them at the head of this communication to represent preacher and funerals my name is not found on your Church Rolls Good citizens of new Albany but 1 am not a bad kind of a Christian nevertheless. At least 1 have a soft place in my heart for the clergy. They Are a clean Good natured and hard working set of Fellows and come As near being common Hacks for All kinds of people As any persons in the Community. They Are like the tins at our pumps. Everybody who gets dry seems to think it just the thing to go and drink out of them and than drop them without the East Sease. Of obligation. If the y. M. C. A. Or the. Y. P. S. C. E. Or the w. 0, t. U. Or the n. K. G., or any other aggregation of capital letters Wauls a boost some preacher inst be trotted out to do service or the occasion. The average Clergyman is expected to be in read Ujj Ess to shake a prayer amp a speech Dick and Harry takes a notion that he should do so and if he declines it is considered an evidence of Lack of recently i have been standing round watching the funerals and have made some notes. I never saw a funeral without two things a Hearse and a preacher. No matter How Black or Blank a life a i Ian May have lived no matter if he has cursed the Church and the clergy while he was ii health some Clergyman is expected to break up a whole half Day of his time to go and administer the forms of a Christian burial. And if he does not manage in some Way to so twist the neck of his conscience As to Send the Corpse to heaven the friends of the departed Are insulted and every after a a Cut his acquaint tence. It seems never to occur to the average Mourner that it is no favor to the Clergyman to attend a funeral. It is considered an Opportunity for him and so the More burials you can pile on him and the More trouble you can put him to the better it makes him feel. Indeed it is a wonder that some Bright person has not struck the idea that a. Preacher ought to help Bear the funeral expenses for the a a Honor done him in asking him to hold the service. It has come to he a great a a comforts to the bereaved in giving their dead a proud funeral to Trot out three or four preachers at a time. It is considered a great compliment to the Corpse a lady said in the burial of her son a everything went off beautifully just think of it we had three minis ters and they All took the facts in the Case was the dead boy was a a bad egg a and when he lived did not care half As much for three Hundred preachers As he did for one Saloon keeper. I have been pumping some of the preachers recently and i Hope they will Pardon me if i report on them. I asked a number of them some questions and the response was the same All round. Why do you go out to the cemetery after the funeral service is ended it takes your time and is of no manner of use. Of some of the friends would be offended if we were not there to walk with the Sexton before the coffin. Why do you take off your hats whip the Day is cold ? it seems like a crazy thing a expose yourself in Tjit Way. Of it is a Mark of respect and the mourners Call us irreverent if we do not do it. I suppose the people whom you Comfort in your funeral services then pay you Well for your exposure and respect ? the fact is it is a rare thing for people eve i to thank us for our service. Why you done to mean it it is a fact. They compliment the undertaker and the singers but the preachers Are the exception. Well when you officiate at a a big funeral where there is a magnificent display of carriages and Flowers and the like of course you Are enumerated not much we aint. At these big affairs they always economize on the clergy. One pastor said i was really once offered a five Dollar Bill for a funeral service and was so Thunder struck that 1 have scarcely caught my balance yet. Now now now that is a revelation. I thought All these funerals helped Feather the preacher s nest. Sinner As i am 1 am moved to an act of Justice and have provided in my will that if a friends propose a grand turnout on my account that they shall Cut off one Hack for every preacher ij1 attendance and pay him the Price of the Rig and if i die poor that my friends shall at least write the minister a polite note thanking him for his kindness and comforting words. If they done to do it i want them to understand it will be a capital offence to the Corpse. A we recommend Dewitt a Colic and cholera cure because we believe it a Safe and reliable remedy.
