Now that our very popular und enterprising tailor Joe Clark has got Well established in his new rooms at the Corner of East Berry and Clinton streets he his settled Down to work and is doing a larger business than Ever before. He has purchased some of the finest cloths Ever brought into our City and is making them up into neatly fitting suits of All descriptions. The Spring styles for business suits Are very pretty and Joe knows just How to make them. In a few Days he will have a goodly number of them finished and on the Street and they will do Honor to the men who Wear them. For style it is hard to beat Joe s suite. He is a student of fashions. At a glance he seems to take in the style that will become the Man to be measured and fitted and consequently never fails. He never is governed by patterns nor comi it Elled to follow what other people have originated. He is original in his own designs and therefore does for the gentlemen of fort Quot Wayne just what new York tailors do for their customers make a coat fit and become the Man rather than make the Lilian fit and become the coat. Indeed Here is wherein his superiority consists. He is an artist in his line of business and not a Mere copyist of the works of another. Or. Clark has a Good Trade composed of customers who want a Quot suit Worth having Quot and rely wholly upon the tailor to get it up. The suggestions of an ignoramus in the business Are Quot not taken but when finished if the suit is not entire y satisfactory he neither compels nor allows the person to take it for a poor fit is always the loss of future Trade whether it be a Boot or a coat. Young men outside of fort Wayne desiring an excellent fitting suit of clothes will find it to their interest to visit this metropolitan establishment. William o Brian the Calhoun Street grocer now has a guest at his residence. No. 50 Melita Street who is extremely remarkable not Only on account of her advanced age but also for the unusual mental and physical Powers retentive memory Etc., which she still rejoices in and because of the stirring scenes through which she has passed during her Long and eventful life. Phebe Sofii ild who is the person referred to was born at Persip Peny near Morristown in new Jersey on the 5th Day of june 1767, and will therefore have completed her 105th year on the 5th Day of june of this year. She was therefore alive and located in the right place to see Many of the principal events of the revolutionary War. Her memory is wonderfully , and she now relates with great gusto Many incidents which came under her observation during those times Quot which tried men s souls Quot and which evidently produced deep impression upon her mind. Mrs. Tophield had the pleasure of seets Washington three times and his wife twice and her recollection of his Fine and inspiring appearance is quite vivid. She says that Quot they Quot meaning the British of course tried to starve him and his command out at Morristown and that Uliey would probably have succeeded had not the americans captured a British Sloop which came from Ireland and landed at Elizabeth town. Our soldiers were nearly famished when they made this Quot haul Quot having lived on herring for weeks and existed on one herring a piece for four Days just previous to the capture. The ship was loaded with potatoes and horse beef which the old lady says Quot tasted kind of Sweet after the name of the vessel was the Quot Blue Mountain Valley Quot and after its cargo had been taken off the vessel was scuttled bored full of holes and it was sunk at Elizabeth Point where mrs. S. Thinks pieces of the Wood probably still remain As Wood does not decay As fast in Salt As in fresh water. She also states that the hessians tried to Quot go through Quot the City but got to Springfield new Jersey and got swamped. The tories escorted them around the Short Hills. Mrs. Tophield relates with much feeling the treatment which her grandmother while lying very sick received from tiie hessian invaders. They took her brutally from the bed stripped the bed of its clothes and left her out of doors unprotected from the Sun or storm. They rushed through the Grain Field destroying All of the Grain stole All the clothes in the household and deprived the owner of All of his clothes excepting shirt and pants. One of the soldiers was about to deprive him of those necessary articles when an officer rebuked him and asked if he was not satisfied with what he had secured. She says they lost their bests officer whose name she has forgotten at Elizabeth Point he having been shot by a Young englishman by the name o also relates the particulars of the firing of a Bridge by the hessians which she describes As making Quot As big a fire As any one could wish to mrs. Tophield was married in 1785, but had no children. She however adopted a daughter who after her marriage took the old lady to Iowa where she supported her until 1860, when becoming tired of her she brought her Back to Indiana and left her out of doors when she was removed to the poor House. Here res Rei Zainea nine years when her Niece mrs. Martin hearing of her friendless condition took her after considerable trouble from the poor House to a Good Home near Richmond Indiana. Mra Martin although she had lost any Trace of her aunt for Many years remembered knowing her Well in childhood and entertaining a deep respect for her concluded to take Good care of her for the remainder of her life. Soon after the old lady moved to her new residence mrs Martin gathered from her that although her husband had been a revolutionary pensioner she had never secured the pension to which she was entitled and therefore she set herself to work to secure her rights for her. The two therefore took a trip to Washington for that purpose and after four months hard work succeeded in getting All her Back pension amounting in All to about 510,000, allowed iwo. During her trip she was the object of much curiosity. She attended one of gen. Grant s receptions where she was treated with marked consideration and deference by the president his father wife and daughter. She has thus seen and talked with both the first and last presidents. The old lady belongs to a Long lived family and is yet po8ses.sed of a remarkably Strong memory. She is very witty and Miny instances of her humorous a Chartres Are related. When asked a the chairman of the House committee Why Ler husband had never applied for a Penson Phe answered referring to his Pride that Quot he was too big for his she is in favor of woman s rights and is strange to relate a Strong Democrat. She looks at our modern improvements with a somewhat prejudiced Eye especially fashionable hotels and sleeping cars.
