Fort Wayne Daily Gazette (Newspaper) - January 1, 1872, Fort Wayne, Indiana The fort Wayne daily gaze i e monday morning. January. 1. 18t2.ailg a a Witik a Ostby. Jaki Jary i 1872. Light rather than Oas. I i an article published on Friday morn ing last concerning the question of Gas we urged the necessity of having a state Gas inspector who should see that the people received the Quality of Gas for which they paid. It seems we struck popular chord All Over the state but More especially within tie limits of our own City. Communications 8ue8tioiie, words of approval in fact All kinds of demonstrations have been the results of a Short article prompted perhaps quite As much from the size of our own Gas Bills As any feeling of wrong which the people were sustaining. It is True that the pric iof our Gas has been let Down from four Al Lars per thousand feet to three dollars and. A half for which we As Well the people should and doff Al very grateful. But if it is True that the Grade of Gas now manufactured is lighter or More diluted so that one thousand feet make no More Light the six Hundred feet formerly did Theo we have not 80 much to be grateful for As Many particularly the Gas manufacturers May suppose. It is the easiest thing in tie world for a Gas manufacturing company to Knish Gas rather than Light. Ordinarily people hav some Way of protecting themselves from the hands of those who would swindle to Iem if they could. If they mistrust that too much is being paid a certain dry goods dealer the Price can be inquired of some other merchant engaged in a similar business. The same is True in every Branch of Trade. The desire to make a ales induces Competition prices Are Cut Down the Quality of the goods closely examined by purchasers Ai opposing Sellers and the people Are thus protected from swindle. But in the manufacture of Gas it is entirely different barely if Ever Are there Competition Gas works within the limits of the same City. A certain Price is fixed upon and there is no escape. Pay or let it alone. In a City like ours it has become a necessity therefore there is no Alfema Tive. The people must use Gas and must pay the monopoly Price. But if there is no Means of regulating the Price of Gas with some reference to the Cost of its maniac tire there is still less Chance for fixing the Juato i to be furnished. Nineteen twentieth of the people Are entirely ignorant of How it is manufactured and a still greater number Are uninformed As to the manner in which fifty per cent May lie added to the profits by producing a Low Grade of Gas. Nor is there any Way of knowing Oia Leas Spee study is made of the subject which business men have not the time to undertake. Inasmuch then As there is every Opportunity for a Gas company not Only to fix an exorbitant Price but also to manufacture a spurious wide fought not some measures to be taken to protect Consumers against swindle that a state or City has a perfect right to appoint a Gas inspector there can be no doubt. The City of fort Wayne is the digest consumer of Gas in the City. If it is Purdy Asing Coal to warm Public offices or to carry on Public works certainly it has the right to inspect this Coal and see that the Quality is what was ordered my must be paid for. Has it not the right then to inspect the Gas which it consumes in amp it ought it not to do 80? i Ped ally when it is possible and Eren probable that its Gas Bill May be one third More than it Othen would be were the Gas properly inspected and kept up to its Photometric Standard ? by there is anon tier and stronger reason Why the City should appoint an inspector of its Gas. It is for the Good its. Citizens. A police Force is employed to protect them a fire department is paid to save their property a Board of health is appointed to examine into their sanitary condition and Many other officers Are decked to look into their interests. Ought not a Gas inspector then be appointed whose duty it should be to see that citizens Are not imposed upon in the Purchase of an article which they of themselves have no Means of determining whether it be Good or bad ? Price paid is exorbitant or reasonable it is True that such an inspector could not regulate the Rice of Gas. Alt Vough by his reports the common Council could Force the company to keep the Gas at stipulated Candle Power. But by Means of his services the people could be informed As to the profits which the company might be realizing from the manufacture of Gas and if too High a people s Gas company could easily be organized. That the readers of the Gazette May appreciate still a Ore the importance of having Sulci an inspector we publish an editorial which appeared a Short time since in the Toledo chm Mercia. It was headed Quot Gas Faalii snably dressed who has evidently dropped in to make a new year s Call. The Young Man seems to be in a very thoughtful mood acid holds out hand in a rather hesitating manner to accept the wine Glass. On one Side of him As if whispering in his ear is tie dim figure of an Angel form with clasped hands apparently beseeching the Young Man not to yield to a temptation which May prove As in so Many cases the first step in a downward career of infamy and crime. This is the Quot Good on the other Side a Little in the background is a horrible winged figure whose face wears a most forbidding sardonic sneer. He stands with his fingers at his nose and looks As though he were fresh from the abodes of the evil spirits. In another Corner of the picture is a portrait of a Mother with her Little son kneeling beside her whom she is teaching to Pray the object undoubtedly is to convey the fact that the boy at the Mother s knee repeating the prayers she has taught him and they ung Man in the picture Are one and the same. Taken altogether it is one of the most touching and pointed illustrations we have Ever seen and we sincerely Hope that none of our fort Wayne ladies who May receive callers to Danwill put themselves in the attitude of the Young lady in the picture. Young men have too Many temptations already to become intemperate to make it otherwise than dangerous and positively wrong for Young ladies to hold out inducements for their gentlemen friends to become disgracefully intoxicated before getting through with their new year s Calls. Ladies have been heretofore altogether Tod thoughtless about this matter but it is simply because they have not been allowed As we have to see Young men whom they have helped to make drunk reeling Lime at Nightfall a disgrace to themselves and source of grief and shame to their friends. It gives us pleasure to note however that the custom of providing liquors for new year s callers is fast going into disuse. This is the Day for taking a new Start in everything that is Manly and honorable for turning Over new leaves for making Only a few Good resolutions which Are to be earnestly kept rather than a great Many which will be either broken or for gotten. He is unworthy to live who is not made a trifle More sad and thoughtful by the i Knell of the departing year Quot whose record of faults and shortcomings can never be blotted out and who with the Dawn of new year has no serious purpose to be More faithful to god and Man than in Days that Are past. The prominent events of the old year at Home Are the treaty of Washington the terrible disasters by fire and accidents and the overthrow of tammany. The year will be remembered abroad As the one which saw the dose of the terrible Franco prussian War and the re Union of Italy with Home As its capital. The number of distinguished men who have died during the year seems unusually Small. Altogether the new year has an auspicious opening and the Gazette hoping that May continue to deserve the Good wishes of its numerous friends sincerely wishes them All in return a new year of unwonted health and Prosperity together with much moral and mental Progress newspaper gossip. The american people Are noted among other things for carelessness respecting the Quality of their Gas. In every other country inspectors Are appointed whose duty it is too see that Consumers of Gas get the Quantity of Light for which they Are tax. The inspector reports at stated periods Mon tie Candle Power of Gas furnished. K found not up to the required Standa the company furnishing the Gas is subject to a heavy Fine. In London the w inspector is selected a with reference to his ability to a in duties of 4he pop tion acceptably. Is Dio Aen by the government and is beyond the reach of. The companies. His duties Are Dischia fearlessly the result of Wimch is in thit City the Candle Power of Gas u much higher than in any City on this continent. This inspection system of stimulates a spirit of rivalry among the different companies in London and it is announced that some of them take Pride in keeping their Gas up to fifteen Candle Power. Gas May be made of Twenty one Candle Power but it cannot be consumed in an Ordinary Burner or under the usual pressure As it would produce smoke. The lighter the Grade of Gas or the More dilute the More readily it will pass through an aperture therefore Ltd Gas of Low specific Gravity will rapidly run up a High score on the meter without affording any adequate compensation in the amount of Light furnished the company May greatly increase their profits by pumping atmospheric air or by permitting a Laige Quantity May fifty of Hydrogen thus pro dung a Low Grade of Gas. The difference Between the european system and that pro value in this country therefore is to be found in tace fact that in Europe the people pay for Light while in this country they pay for just so Long As companies contract to furnish Gas and not Light they May dilute it to and desired Dree and run it through their meters by the Bot and Consumers have no / remedy new i Quot a a a ctn to candles and the european plan is a Good one and should be adopted in this country. A terrible temptation. The last number of that most excellent of All the weekly family papers floor to and borne has. One picture which contains in itself an unusually eloquent and Effe Etire Temperance Sermon. The picture entitled Quot a terrible temptation Quot represent a Beautiful and elegant a attired Young lady standing near a table loaded Down with Flowers fruits and edible of various kinds. She is in the act of proffering a Glass of wine to a Young Man also a the Penn Check me journal recently received a letter addres to the quoted ter of the Cene Bec a even the dignified and enlightened Cincinnati Camm Erdal Speaks of a that editor is an invent Tive Genius. A an editor was lately hanged in a Small european town and Jet no reporter dared speak of him As Quot a rising Young a the report that George William Curtis is to assume the chief Editorship of the new York Totnes on the first of a next is authoritatively denied. Cd. K. Locke is now Reading the proof sheets of a new edition of his Quot Nasby they Are to be published with voluminous explanatory Notee tand thirty debt illustrations by Nast an introduction by Charles Sumner and a steel plate of the author. January a an editor in Illinois having engaged a new reporter received the following As his first Effort Quot we Are informed that the gentleman who stood on his head under a pile Driver for the purpose of having a tight pair of bytes drug on shortly afterwards found himself in Chiny perfectly naked and without a cent in his a Boston still keeps up its press Clab dinners which is More than can be said of this Day. The last dinner was at the be vere House with plates for fifty. Among those present were Quot Warrin on Quot William s. Robinson Geo. A. Marden of the Lowell courier Mark Twain Charles Coffin and others. A letter was. Read from Bret . Y. Globe. A a writer in a recent number of the critic referring to or. Griffin s sketch of Geo d. Prentice thus refers to that glorious old editor Quot there was no realm in which his image motion did not seem to wander no Point in wit his Nice discrimination did not Quot appear to discover no Beautiful thought above his Conception or expression no object of feeling that could withstand the Force of his ridicule no enemy who could daunt his courage and no Victor who could Excel him in magnanimity. If Prentice had been actuated by motives somewhat different from those which moved Lim had been impressed by other influences different surroundings his name would have been As High sounding in letters As that of Alexander in warfare. He would have been immortal. The supreme court Circle. From the Liew York Herald december to the supreme court Circle is distributed Between Capitol Hill and the National hotel. At the National hotel that celebrate old inn where Buchanan got the hotel disease the biggest most robust co Clossal judges of the supreme court keep their abode. There is old judge Clifford of Maine who weighs above three Hundred pounds there is Justice Davis of Illinois a Man Worth his millions who weighs hard upon three Hundred pounds there also abides Justice Nelson of new York the Nestor of the Bench who can not weigh much less than two Hundred pounds and is a remarkably handsome specimen of a Fine old Irish american Jurist covered Over with White hair like a Wise Goat. Chief Justice Chase bought country House outside of Washington last year but his paralysis has again compelled him to return to the Home of his daughter mrs. Sprague where he is kindly cared for and Weady looks like his former self with the exception of his hair which is entirely fone. Two 6f the justices Miller and Leldo occupy Roomy and agreeable houses in the lost waste of Capitol Hill. There also lives the Solup Tuyay Middleton clerk of the court who is said to be quite Rich and Whorff a Tell you plenty of stories about Wirt Pinkney Bufus Choate and Cliance Llor Kent. Justice Field s House is said to have been presented to him by his brother Cyrus a. Field. Next door to him William m. Evarts of new York owns a House which is now occupied by a Nevada lawyer. These two houses form a part of what used to be the old a Mitol prison where mrs. Surratt and Belle Boyd were confined and Captain Wirz was hanged. Justice Swayne occupies the West end and Justice Strong boards at the Ebbitt House while Justice Bradley is the immediate neighbor of general Sherman in the old Grant Douglas mansion. Richard Parsons the marshal of the court who is one of the wealthiest men in Cleve Hind Ohio boards at the Arlington hotel. The richest Man on the supreme Bench is Davis sometimes spoken of As anti Grant candidate for the presidency he owns ads t of the valuable property in Bloomington i Well off Are Bradley Strong and amp Liller. The following justices of the supreme court have never been elected to Congress Bradley Davis Nelson Field Miller and Swayne. Chase Clifford and Strong have been in Congress. Of these men the poorest is Clifford not Worth above fifteen thousand dollars yet Happy As a Wood Sawver. He is sixty eight years old was Polk s attorney general and minister to Mexico and was put on the Sun Creme Bench by Buchanan. Field is also indifferently Well off Worth perhaps s40,000. Strong although nominally from Pennsylvania is a native of Connecticut and a representative Yankee in sagacity and Force. He left Yale College and took to school teaching like chief Justice Chase and this brought him to Philadelphia where he entered the bar in 1832, and took up his abode in the old dutch county of Berks. He served Many years As a judge of the state supreme court. He is married to a second wife and has a crop of Young children. Justice Samuel t. Miller is a native of Kentucky and Many think the Ablest Man on the Bench. He has been twice married and the daughter just wedded to colonel stocking is the offspring of his first wife. He began life As a physician expressed himself too freely on slavery and in 1850 he settled in Iowa. He was counsel to a Rich widow there his present wife and they have several children. She was a spirited Able woman and Miller ranks with Chase As a Man of original the outfit a bold Man Large learning and candid charitable spirit. If Chase should die now. Miller would get his place and de j serve it. Mrs. Miller s father is said to a have been an inn keeper in Ohio. Judge Swayne is Rich made so by Judi Cious investments in Western real estate. He put $10,000 in Toledo proper to which yielded him after several years ?300,000. He has several capable sons. Justice Nelson has gone lib me to new York state and some think he will never return Here being now very old on tie verge of eighty. He is very Well off and is married to a second wife bleached and Beautiful in Well Jiro served years As him self. Triesc justices Are now a harmonious concordant body having got Over their j fierce quarrels about the Greenback Gold contracts. They have just rendered a new i decision on this subject and nobody knows what it Means so that they Are All writing individual opinions upon it. The judges feel that they occupy a relation of unpopularity with the politicians. Brt goods.
