To Dally a a Ltd Ite ims More Jinn double tie Clr it Latiea in and ont of the City of by outlier paper fall Tepetl lug fort Wajmer. Gre lets Portland speech. There is something noticeably Peculiar in the last speech of the democratic candidate for president. It is an attempt to say something to stay the Inq Nimira of the Liberal republicans and War democrats crowding upon him from All quarters concerning the in Jmst of the Rebd debt the pen Sioning of the in Bel soldiers and the paying of $,000,000 for the dares of the South. That which or. Greeley does say and More especially that which manifestly he purposely refrains from say ing indicate the managing partisan rather than the open Manly Candor which we have a right to expect from the ardent Follower of Henry Clay. It is Clear that or. Greeley would rather be president than to be right. He says that he has not been asked about the office except by some Small Fry politicians who he says want to exclude the demo Crata and secure All the offices themselves. We Hope he has no reference to the liberals in fort Wayne. However he snubbed these impertinent Elloff and now tells them plainly enough that his modest democratic supporters shall be first served. This is probably Well enough. Although in View of the fact Liat Greeley says that All thieves liars rum Sellers pimps &c., Are democrats he ought not to be surprised that liberals think they ought alone to be entrusted with the offices. Greeley understands the democrats better. He knows and has often said that they Are Only attached by Quot the cohesive Force of Public plunder Quot and hence he intimates that they shall have the first and the Best slice. He says that no Southern Man who could be elected to the legislature or made colonel of a militia regiment Ever eng greeted the pen Sioning of rebel soldiers. This Dikiy be True. But it should be remembered that his personal Friend Jefferson Davis and some 150 others his official associates in the confederacy could not be elected to the legislature nor to the col Nelcy of a militia regiment. They Are not eligible to those positions. The people would like to know what Davis and his proscribed associates have said to him upon this subject. Those Are the men who feel the deepest interest in the rebel soldiers. Let us Knoxjr what these men have written and said. The Comer is sharply turned but there is yet anxiety and inquiry will go on. It is remarkable and under the circumstances somewhat alarming that when upon the subject with the knowledge that his opponents every where charge him with favouring the pen Sioning of rebel soldiers or. Greeley refrains from saying one word As to his own views upon the Swigert. In View of the fact that his language implies that some persons though such As could not be elected to the legislature have written or spoken to him upon the subject it is strange that he does not say As he does in regard to the appointment to office that the persons would not be heard or heeded. It was due to the occasion to himself and to the country that he should avow his own views upon the subject. Trimming is alike cunning and criminal. There is another very remarkable feature in this speech. There is not one word said about paying $400,000,000 for the slaves in the South. Or. Greeley knew that in his speeches in the South made with a View to his candidacy he was generally under Stool both South and North to favor a proposition to pay the South for their slaves. He also must have known that a very Large portion of the people and especially the negroes Are very anxious to know whether or not the negroes and Whites Are to be taxed to pay for tie negroes. Why this strange reticence can it be explained upon any other hypothesis than that he is in favor of paying for the slaves ? it is True that he says that the South have Only Justice to expect. But has he not intimated again and again nay proposed that it would be injustice to pay for the slave ? is it not quite Clear from what he says in his Vicksburg speech that it would be no More than Justice to provide for the disabled rebel soldiers Thea they would be equally dear in the estimation of the government there would a what he would Call Equality the basis of party reconciliation for which the rebel Longs. The doctor should be More candid and explicit. We Are pleased that he has finally begun to make political speeches and we do Trust that he will Here Ailer let Quot the country know whether he is to fill Soai Ojei Jcj Tfaye Elack esl Imater whether if elected he will be what the Northern liberals represent him to be or whether he will be the Strong Friend and ally of the Jet. Davis Wing of the Southern democracy and the consistent secessionist they say he is. We Hopo that before or. Greeley completes his tour in the East he will give us Light upon this subject. Before his nomination the Gazette figured out very clearly that he gon. Shanks had been constantly losing ground and votes and that if he were again nominated he would to Defeated. The probability of what Tho Gazette then predicted has certainly been increased by subsequent events. Shanks can be beaten this Lime and ought to be . When the Gazette sought to show Why it considered the re nomination of gen. Shanks not the most available one it took it for granted that the democratic parly would nominate a Man to oppose him. The Hon. John Colerick was then living and it was generally believed he would again be nominated. After Hia death such a of the consistent and straight out democracy As Hon. A. P. Edgerton was talked of and we feared that if general Shanks were renominated and then opposed by such a Man it might result More disastrously to the Republican party Titan it would if some new Man was nominated instead of general Shanks. This position was assumed by the Gazette not Mccanse it esteemed general Shanks , but rather because it regarded the Eliare of the Republican party More. But now that the democrats have made their Choice the Gazette has no fears whatever of general Shanks defeat. The voters of the ninth Congre Simial District desire a Man to represent them not a boy and every Republican in the District except a few foreheads will cast his ballot for the Man who has represented them Long and Well. If there was any feeling against gen. Shanks in Allen and other counties before the nomination it has now been forgotten and he will receive his Juu party Vou. The meagre majority which elected him in 1870 will be quadrupled in 1s72, and democrats will learn to their sorrow that a boy however Able and precocious he May be and however much esteemed personally does not always make a Strong candidate. As a Young Man of Honor and integrity so far As we know him we entertain the highest respect for or. Neff. But to give him the preference Over such men As Hon. A. P. Edgerton judge Lowry or. Born do and other Para aident democratic gentlemen of this District is simply ridiculous and Quot won t take Quot with the democracy. Let the Sentinel therefore be very discreet in predicting or. Shanks defeat for if the signs of the times indicate anything it is that general j. P. C. Shanks will be elected by As Large a majority As in 1868. The window of despair. A neb lace Netos Esq. Since the new York Tribune a article on Quot decency in politics Quot it is said that Boss Tweed is preparing a lecture on the Quot honesty of stealing and Jeff. Do vis a paper on the Quot patriotism of a in saturday s Gazette the Type made us say Quot there Are few other men in the country than Hon. Samuel Shellabarger of Ohio Quot instead of Quot Fezer men Quot As it was written. In the same article we undertook to speak of Virgil s Well known character Quot sinon Quot but a Young Typ insisted on having it Quot Siren Quot very much to our disgust. Hon. C. Webb is unquestionably the Ablest Man of the democratic party in this state and when he fails to shows it in Bis speeches and thus disappoint his democratic friends As he did in fort Wayne we regard it the fault of the material out of which he must manufacture i speech rather than any Lack of brains of his part. Quot the Gazette has fallen Back to its first love and has commenced to fight the War Over . Whether Quot the Gazette has commenced to fight the War Over again Quot or not it is determined that the people shall know How gallantly the sent ind and All other do Moc Ratie papers Laboured for the Success of the Confederate cause. Accordino to the is Bune i own classic fiction out of the forty papers in Penn Sylvania which support Greeley thirty nine Are democratic and Only on Republican which went to Greeley by Purchase just the same As the fort Wayne Republican will declare for him in a few Days. What a Republican uprising Greeley ites admit that on an average about five Bourbon democrats will be found in each township in the state but not More hum this. Admitting their figures to be about right it will take nine thousand two Hundred wies away from or. Greeley. How Many votes can he afford to lose and carry the state the leaders of the Greeley party hav. Ing purchased the fort Wayne Republican Are now. Attempting to buy up the free Fiess and Waite the two in the interest of Greeley. We have always regarded or. Foster a Man of firmness and nerve and shall be greatly surprised if he docs not now resist All attempts to suppress his paper which is earning for itself a commendable reputation for Candor and consistency. That its influence is potent in this county is apparent by the efforts now being made by the Greeley its to suppress it. We were just out of College and determined for the last time to have one of he pleasant Little parties which the first thursday in every month had for the last five years successively ushered in with so much merriment. The car Caine for us and Laden with prizes we Jumi ted in and were received the same evening at the Castle of Sauve Boeuf by the family of our Friend and fellow student Leon de Lisle. Leon s father was a Little Lively old Man i fancy i Sec him now seated at the Long Able which was always lengthened to suit the number of guests. Towards the end of the supper De Lisle amused himself by telling our fortunes. You Armand Quot said he to a great fellow with a profusion of Light curls Quot you shall be seated upon the Fleur de you will Wear a Long flowing Robe. I will bet a bottle of la Veuve thai you will be a this prophecy excited our mirth for indeed Armand was More of the nature of an epicurean than of the future judge in the Council chamber. I accepted the bet. If De Lisle were alive now i should lose it for Armand is an attorney. Quot done i Quot cried the old Man Quot but As we must wait some time before it can be decided i will in the meantime bring up one bottle out of my Celiar which i know you will like. If has Iwen forty years there. Think of that my Young he got up and took a Candle and we All prepared to accompany him. The cellar where he kept his wine was a Large vaulted room similar to the vaults at the Church of st. Denis. At the fur Tiger end was a Little gothic door entirely Black. Barrels Ware Laid along the Walls but a skillful Eye soon discovered that this was not the original destination of the apartment. The pavement although now unequal and broken had been of smooth Stone. The old Man was pleased with our Surprise and admiration he seated himself on an empty cask and raised his Candle so As to show every portion of the place to the Best advantage. And then the legend a for what old vaulted room had not one Tolje following is the Story of De Lisle Quot after the Ware with Holland the youngest son of the Marquis de Sauve by of returned to this Castle belonging to his fatherland resolved to pass the remainder of Hia Days in retirement and repose after a somewhat disorderly youth. He was a Gallant officer and handled the sword and Lyre equally Well and was a great favorite with the ladies of his time and moreover a great spendthrift. Quot the evening of his arrival he retired to his sleeping room about eleven o clock. Soon after All was quiet in the Castle. The officer alone did not sleep he who had been accustomed to the noise and uproar of the nights at Versailles was disturbed by the silence around him. The Moon was shining brightly he opened his window and looked abroad on the landscape beneath Quot the window of despair Quot interrupted Leon. Quot hush Quot said his father Quot i say he opened a window no matter which one. He was occupied in this manner when a lit be after Midnight on the other Side of the River behind a clump of Trees be saw a White Robe float a a Tho Irbid and a female figure walked slowly along the Bank the officer rubbed his eyes and Felt certainly no inclination to go to bed yet. With caution so As not to be observed he descended the staircase unarmed and bareheaded and arrived at the Gate leading to the water. Fortunately a Little boat was tied to a tree he jumped in and a few strokes of the oar brought him to the other Side. The lady in White was there still. She turned towards him and then continued her rambling quickening her Pace a Little As she beheld the officer following her. He went on till at last she led him to the top of the arse me Hill. When he arrived Here he heard a of nosed noise of trumpet cries to Battle the dashing of arms and tramping of horses and although the Moon shone Clear be could see nothing. Terrified and wearied the Young Man Sank to the ground. All that was known of him afterwards was that he never appeared again under the Banner of Louis Xiv. He took orders and entered the Church. He even became afterwards an abbe no slight Honor at that period for the Abbes of Chanc Elade were always Mitred and Crosiere like Bishop?.&Quot saying this the old Man opened the lit tie gothic door i have mentioned and we beheld an empty Tomb More modern than the surrounding architecture. On the Tomb was placed a figure in Stone of a Mitred Abbot in tolerable preservation notwithstanding the destructive and sacrilegious habits of the times. On the Wail we deciphered Bat with great difficulty the Escutcheon of Sauve Boeuf without arms or Crown and some pious inscriptions. From one Comer of this Little apartment De Lisle took a bottle of wine and we bade Adieu to the lordly a Pulcher of the House of Sauve Boeuf. On our return into the dining room we pressed the old Man so anxiously for More details upon this interesting subject that he sent to his Library for an old journal in manuscript and read As follows Quot towards the close of the thirteenth Century the lord of Sauve Boeuf whose Antes tors built this Castle wag engaged in a War with two neighbouring Barons those of loss and Montignay. Sau Vebr of had a a very pretty daughter this Young lady fell in love with Baron de Losse. One Day when he was permitted to visit at her father s Castle he mounted his horse and descended the grand staircase backward. The Baron de Losse also loved the Young lady very much but soon saw a fearful rival in the person of Montignay who managed to enlist de Losse in a War with Sau Vebr of and by that Means to further his own plans. Quot a great Battle was fought at Sau Vebr of where the Baron Delosr was killed people said by Montignay. It is certain however that the latter returned Home with Sau Vebr of who struck him on the shoulder and called him son in Law Quot the next Day in the midst of the merry making an old woman Pale and trembling entered the banqueting Hall. Sire she exclaimed wringing her hands and falling on her Knees there is an end to weddings and rejoicings your daughter has thrown herself out of the window into the River which so fast and so Black Between the rocks Quot at this sudden news Tho Baron de Montignay wag so overcome that he swallowed three pints of wine one after another and then fell in a fit and died. As to Sauve Boeuf he swore he would make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and be slain under its Walla but it is not if he accomplished his vow. Quot the truth of the Story is indisputable Quot continued our Host. Odening a bottle of wine Quot the window of despair from which the Maiden in cd exists yet.
