Jr., the assistant postmaster Lead been placed under arrest by the department for alleged embezzlement it Iblis Money. The announcement was All the More startling from the fact that the accused had hither to borne an irreproachable character in the Community being an influential member the congregational Chyroh a Man literary tastes and possessing the Confidence business men not More by his Tine business qualifications than by his general reputation for Honor and uprightness. It became at once the absorbing theme conversation on the Street Corners and in places business and excited the most Complete Surprise with Here and there a solitary exception. Forthwith All kinds exaggerated Rumoro filled the air and a Hundred mis statements were i add. With out attempting to sit in judgment non any one we herewith present the facts connected with this sad affair so far As we have been Able to ascertain them on wednesday last a special agent the Post office department at Washington arrived in fort Wayne for the purpose investigating some irregularities connected with the Money order department the fort Wayne Sce. Or. Dur Gin was out at the time but the agent had no sooner examined his books the he discovered something wrong. Or. Dur Gin was immediately sent for after a Little conversation acknowledged that there was a deficit about $5,000 which he attributed to a mistake in making lip his accounts and which he acknowledged that he had been a Iare for several months fiut had purposely concealed it from postmaster Kamm with the intention setting the matter right. When a ked however what he Durgin had done with the Money he persisted that he had not used it and did not know what had become it. He was forthwith put under arrest but was i charged when or. Kamm at great personal sacrifice forwarded immediately to Washington the full amount the deficit thus Marcing Good the loss to the government. Or. Durgin acknowledges his entire responsibility for the difficulty and frees or. Kamm from All blame. He also de dares that or. Kamm shall suffer no loss and it is probable that the pecuniary part the affair will l e satisfactorily settled to Day. Or. In Gin a been employ Eil in the office for about three years and being an unusually Fine Acci it us Tantra Antr Reaidi v a pc ii in iii was the books the office he was a Man in whom or. Kamm had the most implicit Confidence and with Good Riison for lie was not Only required to make out a quarterly monthly and weekly Rem it but such was his standing that he was entrusted with the management four loan and building associations besides that the congregational Church and one or two other organizations. There have been rumours that he has made illegal use the Money belonging to these organizations but up to the present time we can find no proof such charges. Me. Durgin s statement. A reporter the Gazette called on or. Durgin yesterday afternoon at his residence no. 20 Wallace-st., for the purpose obtaining his statement concerning the matter. He was met at the door by mrs. Dui in who led him to a chamber on the second floor where or. Durgin was lying on a bed. Or. Durgin expressed himself pleased with the bit and the Opportunity thus Given him to speak a word in his own defence to the Public. In answer to a question from our re Porter As to the facts in the Case or. Durgin made substantially the following reply Quot the fact is that there is a deficit in the Post office accounts for which i am responsible having had entire charge the business the office. The amount unaccounted for is in the neighbourhood $5,000 the exact amount i am unable to state. I have been assistant postmaster for about three years. A Little Over two years since i discovered an error in my accounts which i was unable to explain. Thinking that 1 might have been mistaken in some my figures i went carefully Over my books a number times attempting to discover the irregularity but without Success. I have been hoping that i could account for it in some Way. I never maliciously wilfully or knowingly defrauded either the government or any individual out one cent. I had several accounts to keep entirely separate from each Otheir and distinct weekly monthly and quarterly reports to make out. This with the Large amount other business on my hands proved too great a Strain on me and perhaps i was forced to a Lect some items a Little. I never used a Dollar in any speculation have lived tempera Tely and provided for my family with Economy and prudence entirely within the Lii oits my Salara. I Hope and Trust that i shall be Able to make All losses Good myself so that the Urden May not fall on any innocent party. I Hope that the Public May be lenient in its judgment and consider that my character Lias always i Een above mrs. Durgin testified to the Economy with which or. Durgin had lived. He has neither drank smoked chewed Gamb id nor Jeen Quot fast Quot or extravagant in any particular. The family has lived frugally and entirely within the limits or. Dur Gin s honest Means. With True womanly feeling she spoke earnestly her undiminished love for her husband and Confidence in his integrity and said with ill suppressed emotion that though All the world forsook him she would stand by him. This is where the mystery connected with the Case begins for or. Durgin declares that he has not used it. So far As his manner life is concerned he certainly had no need it for his aggregate salary from different sources was about $2,500 a year and he was a Man no expensive habits so far As his House surroundings and personal tastes were Cobber net but just the reverse. Llis personal habits so far As known to the Public were singularly upright and free from reproach. Or. Durgin was an industrious Reader Good books and though he has an attractive Library there is nothing extravagant about it for a Man in his circumstances. He was nearly always at his a Post and Swient what Little Leisure he had with his family. Whether further developments will tend to exculpate or.
