Tips for selecting a Quality Christmas tree the wonderful Christmas season has arrived once again. Choosing the perfect natural tree for decorating is one highlight of this season. In selecting a tree first decide where the tree will be placed. A Christmas tree should never be placed near fireplaces television sets or any other heat sources that could be a fire Hazard. The Virginia Pine and the Eastern red Cedar Trees Are the most popular evergreens that Are used but there Are others. Select a tree that is healthy free of damage and tapers gently from a narrow top to a full wide Bottom. It should have enough Strong branches to support hanging ornaments and strings of electric lights. The tree should also have four full sides or faces unless it is to be placed in a Corner where Only three of the sides will be seen. Avoid Trees with Crooks in the trunk and Large Bare spaces Between branches. If there Are plans to place an Angel or Star on top of the tree select a tree with a Strong singular Center Leader at the top. Buying a tree from a local choose and Cut operation insures its freshness at the time of Sale. If you Are buying a tree from a retail lot then freshness becomes More critical if the tree is expected to maintain its appearance through the Christmas season. Many Trees Are Cut too soon and some transported Long distances to Market. Frequently the Needles have dried out arid begin to shed before they Are sold. Some Points to remember when buying a tree to make sure it is a fresh tree 1 the Needles must Bend without breaking 2 Only a few Needles should fall off when the Terry Shackelford regional Extension agent base of the tree is tapped on the ground a few times 3 the Cut surface of the Stem should feel moist and Sticky and 4 the foliage should have a healthy Green color however sometime Sellers color their1 Trees with a Green Dye. The longer the tree has been Cut the More accumulation of sap at the trunk s Bottom end. Saw off a half Inch from the Bottom because sap build up blocks the tree s ability to absorb water. If the build up is still apparent remove another half Inch along with any lower limbs that might be in the Way. Use a Large base for the Bottom end of the tree s trunk and fill it with water daily. When decorating the tree Check every Light and wire to be sure the string of lights Are in Good condition. Use Only us underwriter s Laboratory approved electric equipment. Never decorate the tree with flammable ornaments such As those made of Cotton paper or other materials that Burn easily. Turn off lights when leaving or retiring for the evening. I Hope this information will be useful during this marvelous Christmas season. Terry Shackelford is a regional Extension agent for Dekalb county. His column appears each Friday in the times journal.
