The fifteen Clay pipes were a gift to Clermont historical society member Harry Reed Appel from Melvin and will be displayed in the lower level of Mcalpin credit offices. Melvin excavated the Long forgotten pipe factory at i pleasant fifteen years ago digging up hundreds of Clay pipes buried under several feet of Ohio River mud for nearly 150 years the factory was the first major Clay pipe Plant in America and operated from 1828 to 1890. His interest in Clay pipes began in 1965 when a Friend of his gave him a pipe bowl he had found near Rig Indian Creek in it. Pleasant. As no written record of the factory and its exact location actually existed Melvin surface hunted along the Banks of the Ohio until he found bits and pieces of broken pottery and pipes the Amateur archaeologist unearthed 100 Clay pipes in mint condition and nearly 1,000 whole pipes with the help of several assistants and his son Monty in his five year investigation of the site.
