Florence Morning News (Newspaper) - September 8, 1970, Florence, South CarolinaBaker sweeps to 500 win late wrecks left Way Clear Tor Darlington late wrecks knocked out Lead ing competitors Gale Yarborough of Timmonsville and Bonnie Allison to leave the Way Clear for buddy Baker of Charlotte n. To sweep to a Surprise Southern 500 Victory in his Cotton Owens Dodge monday in the 21st running of the Granddaddy of Stock car racing. There were 20 Lead changes among eight Drivers during the four hour race on the overcast hazy Darlington International raceway it was Only the third Victory Ever for Baker who had previously captured the National 500 and the 1968 world 600, both in Charlotte. Baker took the Lead for Good on the 303rd Lap and held it the rest of the Way As Yarborough and Allison were bumped from the race by accidents. Yarborough was trying to Bolt past three Drivers and overtake Baker on the 332nd Lap when he went Down the Low Side of the Back Straightaway and slammed into the inside Wall. He was not injured though his Mercury spun around several times. The Timmonsville Driver had led the race three times for a total of 35 laps when his bid for a second Southern 500 Crown came to a sudden halt. Allison had led for 110 laps and was in hot Pursuit of Baker on the 346th Lap when his red Ford scraped the Wall for Long smoking seconds that shattered his title Hopes. Bobby Issac another of t h e Leader led three times during finished second in a Dodge one Lap behind Baker. Issac the Leader de three times during the Day. His last time was for 22 laps before losing it to Baker on the 302 Lap. Pete Hamilton of Dedham mass., piloted his Plymouth in third and pole Winner David Pearson of Spartanburg was fourth in a Ford. Richard Petty of Randleman n. Wound up fifth in his Blue Plymouth. Baker turned in the third fastest time Ever recorded at 128.817 Miles per hour despite nine slowdowns and 50 laps run under the caution Flag. The record is 130.423 which set by Petty in 1967. Baker collected for his Days work. The race was run in three hours and 55 minutes. Only five of Wie cars had dropped out at the Halfway Point in the race and 24 of the 40 starters made it to the finish line. Baker grabbed the Lead for Good when Isaac made a pit Stop for tire changes. Don Tarr of Miami Fla.
