Robert Mcnair played almost no overt part in the successful gubernatorial Campaign of his political pal it. Gov. John West. One reason is that West did not ask Mcnair to take to the stump in his behalf. Some aides of the governor and perhaps the governor himself Are a Little miffed about this. Particularly galling is the fact that Mcnair s rival and fallow Democrat sen. Ernest f. beat the Bushes for West and some of the credit for the Victory is coming his Way. In fact when vice president Spiro Agnew flew to Greenville the week before the election to boost Republican Albert wat son s Campaign Rollings a right there that same Day to lambast the veep. If he did t altogether nullify Agnew s Effort he at least gained equal play for himself and West on Many front pages. Gov. Mcnair let it be known he was willing to do More publicly for West. He did of course endorse him and also did valuable behind the scenes work through Telephone Calls to important contacts. We just weren t asked to do any a Mcnair aide declared. Gov elect John West caught in Middle member of West s Campaign staff confirms this. One reason was a determination to destroy the widely held impression that a West administration would be a rubber stamp of the Mcnair administration. There was a very Strong feeling we should attempt to get away from that image and establish John West As John West not As the no.2 aide explained. Another important reason and one not so widely known is that West strategic ans Felt gov. Robert Mcnair feels left out Mcnair had been damaged by the total integration of South Carolina schools and there was some doubt about his ability to influence Many White voters. The governor performed marvellously in the school Situa the West worker said and criticism of him was in the general impression of the Man in the Street might be that he was somewhat responsible or could somehow have avoided by the same Token there was some doubt about Mcnair s ability to Sway negro votes. A source close to the governor conceded that the slaying of three Black students at Orange Burg by state troopers in 1968 is still a Millstone around his Mcnair did strike hard at rep. Watson in two news conferences but they were called As much to defend his own policies on school integration and the technical education program As to shield West from gop blasts. Rollings on the other hand volunteered his services and campaigned hard for West making appearances in 30 counties in Little More than two weeks while Congress was in recess. Nobody asked Fritz to do West s aide said. We were glad to have him and we think he helped but coming Ori the heels of his divorce we were a Little leery Mcnair and boiling never very close personally or politically both currently have their eyes on the democratic nomination for vice president in 1972. They Are considered in top party circles to be among the front runners at this Point in the not unlikely event a Sou therner will be chosen. That s Why gov. Elect West got caught in the Middle by Rollings unsolicited efforts in his behalf.
