Yes if you As i invest Money you do not need for regular living expenses have savings in Cash or its equivalent to help you through unexpected financial emergencies and have the emotional temperament to buy and own stocks for the Long term. Yes if you. As i. Have a specific investment goal suited to your needs Are ready to stick to your goal until your circumstances change and Are fully aware thai while chaotic declines such As today s Are rare there s always a risk in stocks. I do not know where the Bot Tom of this Stock Market is when we will hit it or whether we Are at it. I admit that even with my list of top notch stocks and no Load Mutual fund shares accumulated soundly Over the years i too have been dragged Down by the greed the Gambl ing the excesses of others. But on the basis that we will get out of this hideous War and into an Era of uneasy peace and on the premise that our society has the will to survive i am convinced that the 1970s will turn out a decade of spectacular growth. And that underlines the old Wall Street truism that any time is a Good time to buy a Good Stock for the to be specific Assumption no. One the Long term trend of Slock prices is unmistakably undeniably up. As the famous study by the Center for research in Security prices disclosed a while Back an investment in a random Cross Section of stocks on the new York Stock Exchange Over a 40-year period would have increased in value to a degree giving you an average rate of return equal to 9.3 per cent a year com pounded annually. To translate an investment of com pounded annually at 9.3 per cent would have grown to in the 40 years. As for the Stock averages they Rose More than per cent Between 1900 and 1970. Assumption no. Two the Long term trend of consumer prices in general is up and inflation has become a Way of life in the Between 1900 and 1970, the Cost of living climbed 359 per cent. Figuring As 100 in the consumer Price Index the Cost of living has soared from an Index of 83.8 in 1950 to More than 134 now. If prices increase no More than 2 per cent a year Between now and 1980, they la be 22 per cent higher than now and if they increase at a 4 per cent rate they la be 50 per cent higher. Stocks Are at Best an imperfect hedge against inflation and nothing is a hedge against the abominations of the past Coupe of years but they re better than most mediums. Assumption no. Three the Long term trend of the . Economy is up and stocks Are an excellent Way in which to participate in this Long term growth. Just since 1945, our country s Gross National product has More than doubled from billion to Over billion. In real terms meaning after elimination of the Impact of Price increases the annual rate of growth has been 4 per cent since 1947. Despite the current 1969-70 recession the Eon census of our most respected economists is that real growth in the decade of the 1970s will approach 4.5 per cent a year. Ownership of shares in a corporation growing along with the Economy is a Way of sharing in this expansion. There s a time honoured Wall Street crack that goes when Black Maria Calls at the whore House it takes the Good girls along with the and the Good stocks have sure gone with the bad during this but i m sticking with my Basic assumptions. And i also confess that if i m so wrong that my Basic assumptions Are wrong i Don t know where to hide. With the markets Grain Stock Market prices mixed earlier gains remain intact 113h 24 2 13 i 5 22 i 69 6 70 333 112 103 8 393 259 9 10 31 4 56 i 56 i 28sh 29 b 5 39 4 40 2 5. 6 7 14 8 34 a 35 36 36 i 24 25 i 2 25 253i 3i 36 16j4 20 a 54 14 s 13 i s a 36 2 2 37 2 a 313.
