Police suppression of the news is against the Public interest the activities of a police depart ment Are not those of a secret society. It is the function of Tho department not Only to preserve Law and order but also to keep the Public informed through news medic of conditions necessary to their Protection. From information we obtain it appears that it has been the policy of the police department to determine what news shall be released to the Public and what shall not. Information on breaking has been withheld despite daily checks at the police department by our reporters. Some crimes of a More serious nature have been committed and information about them suppressed. Police have claimed that some records normally and rightfully open to the Public Are confidential and not available to the press. The 19 breaking during the past two months reported in this newspaper yesterday should have been re ported As they happened. A few were. In others the information was not made available to us by police. If the department fears that re lease of crime information might re Tard investigation let it be said that the press is fully aware that there Are certain conditions under which the release of certain types of information might be harmful to investigation. In cases the press is Al ways ready to cooperate. In All cases however when a crime has been committed the Public has a right to know. If the department fears that re lease of information where arrests have not been made reflects discredit upon police let it be said that fail ure to do so reflects greater discredit that furthermore it creates an at of Public suspicion and distrust particularly in View of the fac1 that secrecy in the police depart ment Public knowledge of breaking and other n Imes even though unreported. If chief Adams and his depart ment think we Are an in Friendly attitude toward them they Are wrong. Since they arc in the business of protecting the Public they should be the first to know that sup pression of the news is not the Way to do the Job. The cooperation of the police department in making news available As it happens to the new agencies is fundamental in Good Public relations for the department it is also fundamental in protecting the Public interest. Air age streamlining the line Between the armed serv ices gets thinner As each is Stream lined for performance in Jet atomic War. We have seen their rivalry in the development of missiles and the it had to be settled arbitrarily by retard of defense Charles e. Wil something of the same rivalry is developing in aircraft. Not Only is there a Navy air Arm a Marine air Arm and an air Force primarily responsible for strategic and tactical air combat but there is coming into being a now army air Arm. The necessities of the Jet atomic age is unifying the services because All need missiles rockets and aircraft to fight on land sea and air. As the air Cav Fry and artillery the air Force is an Extension of the army. Cox and footnotes on history the year was 1920. The league of nations defeat had broken the heart of the War president Woodrow Wil son. The first three term governor of Ohio James m. Cox took up his cause As the democratic candidate for president. Tilted against him was Ohio s Junior senator Warren g. Harding. That is now history. What recalls it is the death of Cox at the age of 87 after building a great newspaper Empire on the ashes of his political de feat. Harding too was a publisher but he sold his Marion Star when he was elected. His death brought to an end for at least
