We in the newsroom scanned Over the Story As it jumped off associated press wires and then forgot about was so Remote and so brutal that there seemed no reason for carrying any of it. But somebody in Florence got the news somehow and his mind started wandering Back to pick up a name that was familiar some years ago. Finally he called Roy Graham our predecessor removed a vast number of times and asked the name of a fellow who fought Golden gloves about 1940. Roy was t sure but together he and the caller decided the i Highler s name was Joe Golombek. Roy came around to the morning news office and to Gether went into the morgue to dig up a microfilm re cording of the Early 1940 editions. The first Roll did t pro Duce anything but the second revealed that in that year a Man named Joe Golombek fought Here As a heavyweight and a comparison of descriptions in one of Graham s sports graphs and the ones on the dead Man left Little doubt that they were the same Man. Golombek was born in Portsmouth vs., and after a Brilliant High school career was offered Many athletic scholar ships from various colleges. He wanted to attend a Small school and headed South for presbyterian. But in route he stopped off at Elon College liked it and stayed. While at Elon Golombek had quite an athletic career. He set a state collegiate record with the discus and tied an other with the shot. As a Sophomore he made the All state Backfield that also included Duke All America Eric Tipton. His baseball ability Drew him several offers from the majors. He gave basketball a fling but because of weak Ankles and his weight his coach advised him to give it up suggesting he turn to boxing to keep in shape. Aside from his athletic prowess Golombek was an Hon or student majoring in history and minoring in music. He played the violin and piano Well while boxing one night in a Virginia City Golombek met the late Tresco Johnson then Golden gloves boxing coach in Florence and a leading contributor to the welfare of Florence youth. Johnson was in need of a Good heavyweight and invited the six one 194-Pound Golombek to join his team. Golombek was not Long in accepting and to make sure he would be in top shape when he got Here started out Riding a bicycle. He Rode it As far As Salisbury n. C., before catch ing a ride and storing his wheel in the Back of the car As a member of the Florence team he was unbeaten until he reached the District finals at Charlotte. Golombek s conquerer could t make the nationals in new York so the Florence fighter accompanied three of his teammates to Madison Square Garden. He was beaten there by a close decision but was impressive enough to be chosen for the olympic games that year at Helsinki. About that time however Finland and Russia started the shooting and the games were cancelled. It was t Loo Long after that that Uncle Sam got into the Brawl and called on Golombek for help. When Golombek left for induction into the air Force he was a Little Short on funds and had to borrow a Little from Frank Sharpe. Asse purity he left with Sharpe the bicycle lie Rode from new bicycle that is still stored in the Sharpe garage. No one hereabouts heard much of Golombek after that until his badly beaten body was found in a wooded area on Long Island. Leaves were stuffed in his Mouth and dirt in his nose indicating that he May have been buried in his Shal Low grave while still alive. That was two weeks ago and at latest report the mystery was getting even deeper.
