New York feb. 6 can a College athlete Start playing varsity sports when he s a fresh Man and still be playing when he s a graduate student Why the Southeastern conference. Where can he play As a fresh Man Only if his school has a male enrolment of less than 750 and if it supports teams in eight different sports the Eastern College ath Letic conference. Where can he be declared permanently ineligible if his coach has bought him a dinner in the Good restaurant across town in Stead of the hash House by the Campus the Pacific coast con Ference. Such major variations in eligibility rules were brought to Light in an associated press Survey stemming from the recent mild furore Over the University of Ken Tucky Baske bad team. Kentucky apparently just Dis covered that its Post graduate stars still eligible under South Eastern conference rules would t be allowed to play in the National collegiate . Tournament. And a lot of people just discovered that the Sec allowed Grad students to play. Long sleeve Light As a Feather Fine Quality go Bardin. Belk s men s store we gives a Green Stamps the Mcaa like virtually every major conference limits varsity Competition to three seasons with in a five year Span. And like most of them it rules out anyone who has completed his undergraduate work and is eligible for a col lege degree. The South s three major conferences the Southeastern Atlan tic coast and Southern Don t have that last stipulation. If a boy still is in College it s Okay with them As Long As he has t used up his three years of eligibility. Of these three Only the Southeast Ern still permits freshmen to play on varsity teams but that goes out sept. 1. Boys now in school who competed As freshmen still will be Able to play for the fourth season. Because the 100 College Recac includes a lot of very Small schools it has a special Rule that permits freshmen to play for colleges whose male enrolment is less than 500 and for colleges under 750 if they support at least two fall three Winter and three Spring sports. The Recac also includes the influential Ivy group which does not allow freshmen to play and counts any year of Scholastic ineligibility against the three years of Competition allowed. The Boarder conference permits the use of freshmen and a couple of others have minor exceptions to the general Rule. There still Are a Good Many ways in which an athlete can stick around for a fifth year to use up his eligibility but nearly every con Ference would frown on deliberately failing a course if they could prove it was deliberate. The big ten for instance has found that More than 50 per cent of students need More than four years to take a degree so it defines satisfactory Progress for an ath Lete As leading to a degree in five years. But any flunk renders an athlete ineligible for big ten Competition. The big seven considers a four year course As Normal and re quires an athlete to pass 24 semester hours of Scholastic work 60 per cent of it with grades of a or better each year to remain eligible. That figure of 24 semester hours seems to be the Standard for conferences which set up definite rules concerning minimum Scho Lastic requirements. But about half the major circuits leave it to the individual colleges to decide what constitutes Normal Prog the major conferences Are Al most unanimous in requiring that Transfer students put in a year of residence before they re eligible for athletics. But Only the big ten applies that Rule to Junior College graduates who go right into a four year school. This was done to make scoring easier for the television fight fan. But what they came up with is something else again. We believe the .10-9, 10-8, 10-7, etc., Point plan is n monstrosity and should be junked. Generally the loser of a Points so Why not reduce the Point awards to four to the Winner and three or less to the loser. Personally we favor the round system. We believe the round sys tem gives the fan the quickest picture of a fight. If a fighter As in recent Archie Moore Joey Maxim Light heavyweight title fight wins on rounds 12-3, that gives the fan a clearer picture than announcing he won an official s vote by 148 to 134 Points.
