By Jimmy Walker morning news City editor the Santa Claus Sleigh and eight prancing Reindeer that carried Santa through the Parade Here yesterday was nothing five years ago but the twinkle in a Little girls eyes. It started out As a Cut out to please her and then it grew and grew. Built by George Pruitt sr., of 109 e. Laurel St., chief projectionist for Florence theatres the float was ended this year the first multiple moving animal float. It was the first multiple mov lag animal float to receive design rights. Getting involved in Christmas decorations is an old Story for the pruitts. All started when my daughter Fairforest was in the fourth Pruitt said. He Cut a Silhouette of a Sleigh and Reindeer and painted it. She got such a kick out of it i told her one Day i d build one with Reindeer with legs that Fairforest was Content for while but five years ago she be Gan pestering her dad. He went to work. First he tried attaching All the legs on rods that moved Back and Forth Bulu the effect was t right. He finally figured out thai a Chain Type linking Between the Rod and the legs would give the running effect. He constructed a 14-foot Model and suspended it in his front Yard Between the Trees and the porch and turned on the Small actuating machine. The first thing we knew cars a search through both United and foreign palens failed of turn up anything like Pruitt s idea. The closest thing was one Sleigh and a moving Reindeer a Len led Back in the 1880 s. There Are Aboul patents on moving dolls and animals but they gave me the Clear signal in the palent Pruitt started work on his full scale Sleigh in the Spring and Pul in almost every available minute. He estimates in costs the Reindeer work the same Way As on the Small from alternating rods connected to the Reindeer legs. They Are driven by a five horsepower motor that also Powers the Sleigh along the Street. It weighs ibs. Speed machine works welded the steer bars and fitted the 1947 Aulo Chassis to it. Santa rides on lop of the Auto body while Pruitt guides Down below. He s also in stalled a Public address system for playing christinas music during the parades. Christmas records Are another outgrowth of the Pruitt s Christ Mas spirit. They be gathered just about every disc on the Market about Santa his helpers and mrs. Claus. The Sleigh made a very unpleasant first voyage in the Charlotle Carousel Afler thanksgiving this year. Ii did l get far for reasons Pruitt blames of a mix up in instructions. He said the instructions Send to him said the Parade would travel three to four Miles an hour. Accounting for Hills and extra Speed he adjusted the gears on the Sleigh for seven Miles an hour. Were creeping by one after another dozens of along Aboul the first of Decem Ber Easl Laurel Streel becomes Reindeer Lane now because of Pruitt s Yule decorations and the heavy traffic. The pruitts estimated 3000 to soon a Pollocc soon cars come by during Decem picked up Santa Claus and hauled Jer him away. Santa s Sleigh and rein i Deer pulled into a filling station. But when he Gol to Char Lotte and started off he saw the rest of tiie Parade leaving. Pretty something else. He s building a Sel of Dwarf helpers and Santa s North pole head quarters on his front porch. He s experimenting now with a Cylinder with bits of Mirros reflecting Light against the ceiling and Wall.
