Florence Morning News (Newspaper) - August 31, 1973, Florence, South CarolinaAugust l. 1973 Florence morning news jackets aus tops in 6aaa 1 Mullins coach of the Mullins auctioneers Fred Senter has Only a hand full of Letterman returning this season bul he in t at All pessimistic about improving on last year s 2-8 record. If Early season scrim Mages and practice Are any indication then the auctioneers could easily develop into the dark horse of the 6-aaa con Ference football race. A Young Ball club with Good size and Good Overall Speed. The attitude of the players has been encouraging and they have been easy to work Senter said. End Baron Reeves leads the returning Letterman and Senter said we re expecting big things out of Reeves this year. He s not Only a Fine athlete but an outstanding individual As Reeves is the team Cap Tain and will team with Gib Mcmillen to Anchor the front Wall for the auctioneers. The Backfield will have plenty of Speed with left halfback Mike Murray leading the pack. Murray is the Only experienced Back and the Little speedster runs the 40 Yard dash in 4.5 time. Gerald Williams will be in the right half Back Slot. Cris Collins has been tabbed As the fullback and both Collins and Williams run the 40 in 4.6 seconds. David Proctor played quarterback for the first time last year and will return to do the signal calling duties again this year. If Proctor has to pass one of his favorite targets will be Veteran split end Billy Holt. Eight of our starting ii players will have to a both ways this said Senter. Randy Sawyer is Only a Sophomore but he has looked Good and will be starting at Center. Our tackles and guards have also turned in Fine performances so we Don t have a lot of depth on the squad and our schedule is perhaps the roughest we be Ever had. If we can hang in there the fir. St couple of games then i believe Well do Dillon the 1972 football Campaign could be a Long drawn out affair for coach Paul Chapman and the Dillon wildcats. Reason being that i Vij Schapman lost his entire defensive unit from last year s 9-2 Ball club and he has Only five letter men returning from the offence. Well depend a lot on our Young players moving up from the Junior varsity Chapman said. But realistically speaking it la Lake several grapes for them to mature and get used to Pla Ying Var sity one of the top players returning for his third year on the squad will be quarterback Kicky Miller. Miller is 5 10" senior and was named to the All conference team last year. Miller passed and ran for 12 touchdowns and was a consistent Ball handler All season for the wild cats. Senior Letterman. Bubba Strickland will join Miller in the Back Field. Strickland was a starter at halfback last year and tallied 60 Points for the season. Chapman s two Veteran linemen Bill Smith and Duncan Townsend will have their work Cut out for them this season As they will be the Only Offen Sive linemen with any experience. Smith is a 190 Pound tackle and Duncan is a scrappy 150 Pound end. Roy Rivers who played in the first game for the wildcats last year and dislocated his Elbow missing the rest of the Campaign will be Back. Center Sam Mclnnis has showed Well in practice As have William Rawl and to Leach. Well be building this says Chapman if our younger players come through we should have a respectable record at the end of the so Castee so Castee unlike its neighbor Myrtle each will not be lacking in personnel for the front Wall positions. Coach Robert Tisdale moves up As he head coach of the braves after several seasons As an assistant and finds himself with a Backfield problem. Tisdale has 13 letter men returning from last year s team of which nine of them Are linemen and that accor Ding to Tisdale is our club s running backs will be the key to the Success of our said Tisdale. Most of our experience is in the line. It will take a lot of hard work and determination by our conference 6-aaa air. City f sept. Spa. Myrlle Beach Ike Sipl. John s Tai Cpl. Sept. Oct. Myrtle oct. Ot1. Nav. Flav. Anchoring the line for the braves will be 6 180 Pound senior James Ches Seho to has lettered for the two seasons and will team with end Don Nie Cooper who will be seeking his third letter to provide a front Wall thai could be second to none in the 6-aaa con Ference. The guards will not be very big in physical size bul have the experience to handle the larger foes. The Center position will be filled by sophomores Randy Harrell or Paul Sloan. The Backfield will have Letterman at each position lot of new faces could break into the lineup. Billy Black will return at the quarterback Slot with de Smalls and Joseph picket filling in at the halfback and Junior David Duncan at the fullback Post. Biggest running threat for the foxes and at 175 pounds is an excellent open Field runner. Quarterback Steve Jordan returns to Han dle the signal calling Job for Neely. Jordan is a this season and although still Young he started last year and got a lot of valuable experience. Most of the line is new As graduation took its toll but tackles Sammy Thomas and Joel herring Are experienced and will help out greatly with the youth corps. Thomas is g 2" and 215 pounds while herring weighs in at 195 pounds. Russell Smith is a senior guard who will give the line the needed Middle strength. Smith was Hurt in a scrim Mage game last year and missed the entire season. Rusty Smith is a senior guard who will give the line the needed Middle strength. Smith was Hurt in a scrim Mage game last year and missed the entire season. Rusty Tindale is an offensive and defensive end who has looked Good in Early scrimmages As has Alexander Moody. Moody will be a Back up fullback and starting linebacker for the defensive squad. Needy said that the swamp foxes were a Young and inexperienced Ball club. Well rely a lot on our returning seniors to give up the with the Marion coach buddy n ecly lost 20 Letterman off of last year s Marion swamp Fox football team which posted a 4-5-1 record and chances of improving on thai record is not quite As Bleak As it might seem. The swamp foxes players dressing out for the 1973 Campaign with most of the players moving up from the Junior varsity ranks. Only nine seniors return with most of them being Letterman but a lot o Young players have showed up Well in prac lice and this could be the deciding Factor if the swamp foxes Are to have a winning season. One of the key veterans returning is halfback Cecil fore. Fore is considered the Young players maturing and the older Talent on hand the swamp foxes could easily have a .500 season. Myrtle Beach the Myrtle Beach sea Hawks posted a 5-5 record last year in the Tough 6-aaa football conference and coach Doug Shaw was hoping to improve on that record this year until. We had about 12 let Termen returning from last year s team and although we were Lack ing offensive and defensive linemen the out look was pretty Bhaw said. The sea Hawks went to a summer Camp in Laurinburg .
