Florence Morning News (Newspaper) - August 13, 1970, Florence, South CarolinaYoung Butler team enters 5 aaa race Hartsville Donald Hughes of Butler High school in Hartsville will have his work Cut out for him As he prepares to Send his Grid team into a new season. Hughes who has served As football coach at Butler for the past ten years lamented that he lost six of his better a quarterback through the Rezon ing of students. Hughes said he has had pret rebuilding phase faces Cheraw 11 Cheraw Ray Wilson head football coach of the Cheraw braves feels that his squad will better their 5-5 record of last year although he will basically be going through a rebuilding phase. The boys seem to be in real Good condition Wilson said and Well probably be playing a lot of Young boys. Wilson said he will have 14 veterans returning from last year s squad. This number includes those players from Long High school which will be transferring to Cheraw High. Wilson who is in his fourth year of coaching and second year As head coach said the boys have a real pleasant attitude and All working real hard in the practice sessions. Listed among his top players Are Randy Butler a 190 Pound senior tackle Larry Hooks a 6 2, 175 Pound Junior guard Dun can Moore tight end David Creech quarterback Steve Snipes halfback Elijah Gainey Andy England guard Tommy Pate tackle Vernon Gilmore a 6-0 200 Pounder from Long Bobby White a 6-1 235 Pound Junior and Garcia Gilmore end. Hartsville Jamboree scheduled Hartsville the Hartsville kiwanis club has announced that eight pee Dee area High school football teams have accepted invitations to participate in its second annual football Jamboree at 8 . Friday August 28, at Kellytown stadium. Each team will play one Quarter against a school which is not on its 1970 schedule. Although the event is con s Side Rcd a scrimmage All teams j will be in full uniform and All i s. High school league rules will be followed except those pertaining to kickoffs and punts. The team receiving a ii Kickoff will put the Ball in play in from its 35 Yard line. A team j electing to punt will give up Possession of the football 35 Yards downfield. This special tricentennial race will feature a 200 Lap sportsmen event and a special 25 Lap race for limited sportsmen. Such famous speedsters As Jimmy Hatchell of Florence Craven Kiker Bill Baker of Timmonsville and Haskell will Ingham of Columbia will be participating at the Speedway. Also racing Are h. B. Lamore Danny Smith. Joe Lane and Charlie Powell. A close race last saturday night found w i 11 i n g h registering another win at the Beach Speedway. Apparently Willingham played a waiting game throughout the first part of the race As Baker of Timmonsville grabbed the Early Lead and held on for some time before relinquishing his Lead to Hatchell one of the hottest Drivers on the circuit this season however Willingham was not to be denied this Victory As he followed Hatchell closely around the Oval and made his move with just Over a Lap to go to gain undisputed Possession of first place. Willingham set the track record for the Myrtle Beach Speedway just two weeks ago but was unable to finish the race due to mechanical trouble. He was followed Over the finish line by Hatchell Baker Larimore and Lane and a Host of other top Drivers throughout North Carolina South Carolina and Georgia. The Jalopy sportsman division was won by Frankie Campbell with Charles Howell Monroe Johnson and Roger Owens following close behind. In All some 14 cars started this popular division. A Good turnout for the opening week of practice but like other coaches added that he will be Able to see what he has after the team began hitting next week. Coach Hughes said he will have about 20 boys returning rom last year s squad but added that some of them Are a Little Green. Hughes cited Pat Young As one of the team members that should stand out this year. Young is a 180 Pound senior guard who plays both ways. Along with Young Hughes pointed out 220 Pound tackle Teddy Thomas. Thomas is also a senior. In the Backfield the Tiger Mentor spoke Well of Ray Coe and Jerry Benjamin. James Dickey a quarterback was one of the boys lost through the zoning along with Dickey Ray Price a guard will be playing for another school. Defensive players Leo Jackson and Allen Mason were also in the set that will not play for the tigers this season. Butler was runner up to Westside High in the class aaa conference last year compiling a 9-1-1 season record.
