Farmington Daily Times (Newspaper) - October 22, 1972, Farmington, New Mexico 4a-suiiday, ort. 22,1972 Famini Natoo . Dally times editorial Page Domenici Best for state Pete v. Domenici Albuquerque Republican and Jack Daniels Hobbs Democrat Are Locking horns in what could be the closest contest in new Mexico in the nov. 7 election. Both men have campaigned vigorously throughout the state in an Effort to succeed . Sen. Clinton p. Anderson a Democrat who is retiring the importance of the Daniels Domenici race can be illustrated by the fact that the National organizations of both the democratic and Republican parties have sent some of their top campaigners into new Mexico to boost their respective candidates. Daniels generally considered to l e conservative in democratic ranks has found himself in the embarrassing position of being unable to endorse with any degree of enthusiasm his party s presidential nominee. Sen. George Mcgovern. Domenici on the other hand wholeheartedly supports the Nixon administration. In his attempt to gain statewide support Daniels has tended to vacillate on a number of important issues the most notable of which is his position on the Vietnam War. It is impossible to determine at this Point where he stands. Daniels economic views also leave some concern As to exactly How far he would go to conform with the National democratic leadership which tends to favor greater centralization of Power in Washington. While Daniels has been Quot promised Quot key spots on various Senate committees if elected the fact is that the new Junior senator from new Mexico will be a Quot freshman Quot and will Start at the Bottom of the congressional seniority system. As a proponent of Nixon policies it would seem that Domenici should be Able to exert More influence on the administration assuming president Nixon s re election than Daniels. Domenici s record in Albuquerque government is Superior to Daniels record in the state legislature. It seems to us that the election of Domenici would be of greater Benefit to the people of new Mexico. Runnels More qualified us Hep Harold Runnels Democrat from House District 2, is being challenged for reelection to a second two year term by Republican de Presson. Runnels has performed Well in Congress. He has displayed courage in condemning irresponsible fiscal policies at the Federal level and opposed the so called Revenue sharing program on the grounds that the Federal government has no Revenue to share and that the program is a method of concealing from the people irresponsible fiscal policies at the local and state Levels. The congressman also endorses the realistic approach of the Nixon administration for extricating the . From military involvement in Southeast Asia. Presson with no experience in elective office appears to be hoping for an Opportunity to be elected in the Wake of a Republican landslide led by president Nixon. In contrast. Runnels served from 1960 to 1970 in the new Mexico state Senate where he gained experience As a member of the finance and Public affairs committees. There should be Little doubt that Runnels is immeasurably More qualified to represent new Mexico s District 2 in Congress. Inside the capital sen. Macgovern hurts chances for Daniels by Tiki Kij a Hobbs anti it it Lovern sentiment is hurting moderate Democrat Jack Daniels . Senate chances in conservative Southern Ami Eastern new it Mexico. The voter feeling is evident despite an eloquent boost for Daniels by West Virginia sen. Robert Byrd at a $10041-couple fund raising dinner that Drew a capacity 540 in Jack s Hobbs Hometown. The successful event grossed More than $25,000. Asked about the effect of Liberal South Dakota sen. George my Covern s presidential candidacy on his Campaign Daniels says "1 will be a Senater who is Independent and vote on the issues As i see them. I won t be captured by the White House be it a Democrat or Republican Quot my Covern was All but ignored at the Daniels dinner. Asst. Senate majority Leader Byrd did not mention the party Standard bearer at a press conference or in his impressive speech. The Only Mcgovern reference was by it. Gov. Robert Mondragon the dinner master of ceremonies. Mondragon said. Quot Don t you believe a voter who will support George Mcgovern will not support Jack Daniels because you re looking at one right Bob placed second behind Jack in the Senate primary in june. But Southern and Eastern new Mexico soundings in the tight Senate race Between Daniels and Albuquerque Republican Pete Domenici showed anti Mcgovern votes will Cut Jack s total in the general election nov. 7. Daniels endorsement of my Covern was made in Northern new Mexico considered pro Mcgovern. Another Hobbs Democrat who has Laboured Long in the political Vineyard reported anti Mcgovey sentiment routing Daniels backing in Clovis Northern Eddy county and i a county. Still another barometer a county republicans have chopped Down the. Democratic voter registration advantage from 4.5-1 to 4-1 since the primary june 6. An Artesia Democrat said Mcgovey s Low rating in the area Quot has got to affect Daniels he forecast a big majority for president Richard m. Nixon in Northern Eddy county. The spokesman and other politicos in Southeastern new Mexico predicted much ticket splitting however. A Clovis Democrat says Mcgovens candidacy Quot win Cost Daniel 300 to 500 he assessed the effect on jacks Senate bid As minor in Curry county. Daniels is leading Donnici in conservative Curry and Nixon is running More than 3-1 ahead of Mcgovern. The Clovis democratic Leader said Curry traditionally counts a High per cent of ticket splitting voters tii Way. An Alamogordo Democrat says Mcgovern will lower duels vote in Otero county but the Factor will not be decisive. He say Quot it s a big influence. It s an obstacle for Jack to he says Daniels will carry Otero and Dona Ana counties against Domenici. He sees heavy ticket splitting tor Republican Nixon and Democrat Daniels. A Hobt Democrat who is strongly conservative says Adverse Mcgoven sentiment will exert a substantial negative afum on Jack s election chances. A longtime Hobba rep Bucan Leader forecast a Lea county Danalis majority of 3,100 Over Domenici. Hits is based on an estimated turnout of 71 per cent or total a county vote of about 15,500 nov. 7. He pegged Jack s Home county vote at 9,300 to 6,100 for Domenici. In addition 1 feel i must comment on two statements particularly in your recent editorial. You say Quot nobody is required to patronize an a rated movie. Nobody is required to read books containing pornography Quot True one does t have to look but unless one is bund it s impossible not to see. What with infect it and suggestive pictures and advertisements jumping out from newspapers magazines movie houses Etc. I for one feel my rights Are violated when not intending to look at those things suddenly there it is. What a person does in private is his own business but pornography is forced on the Public just As i said unless you re Blind deaf and dumb. Too. I strongly believe there must be Laws at least controlling this sort of thing. Sex was never intended to be a cheap joke As so Many people seem to think it is. Quot nor is anybody required to obtain an abortion Quot no. But when it is legally sanctioned by the civil Law to destroy innocent human life at any stage bom or unborn that is the innate danger.
