European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - December 14, 1967, Darmstadt, HessePage 20 the stars and stripes thursday december 14, 1967 the prep scene stripes to name athlete of year for fourth time by Bob Wicker staff writer the 1967-68 school term has not yet reached the Halfway Mark but it is time to Start taking notes for our finals test late next Spring. That big examination will consist of Only one question who was the top athlete in us Desea during the school year this will be the fourth straight year that the stars and Stripe sports staff has named an athlete of the year from among the hundreds of boys who compete in us Desea sports. It s a big task thus the Early Homework. As in the past we will Start accepting nominations from coaches for whom the athlete played in late april and will name the Winner following the completion of the Spring sports program in May. There is no trophy or Cash award that goes to the Winner but perhaps one of our season ending stories about a athlete of the year will someday help Lead to a scholarship. If so the time and Effort will have certainly been worthwhile. We Are again looking for a boy who is not Only a top notch ath Lete but a solid citizen who brings Home a report card that reflects hard work in the classroom As Well As on the playing Field or gym floor. The requirements Are stiff but for the past three years we be found boys who have met them with flying colors. The first stars and stripes athlete of the year 1964-65 was Terry Brennan who starred in football wrestling and soccer at Frankfurt. Terry is now a Junior at Auburn where he is attend ing on a football scholarship. Bob Lueke of Madrid an a Stu Dent who played football basketball and track was honoured in1965-66. Bob is a Sophomore track Ace at Rutgers. Last year s Winner was bad Kreuz Nach s Fred Cheeks also a three sport Letterman. Us Desea honors Grinders the us Desea All division football teams for the 1967 season were released this week by us Desea sports chief Don Devona. The teams listed below Are a composite of All opponent selections by the coaches whereas the recently published stars and stripes All league teams were the result of an Honor system ballot that allowed the mentors to include outstanding players from their own squads.
