Volunteers Are sent out on a single night in late january to find people sleeping in emergency shelters or in places that Are not designed for sleeping humans. Only these people who Are literally homeless Are included in the count. Searchers began their census of literally homeless people at Sunset on wednesday Jan. 28, and continued until Sunrise the next morning. During that time they found 27 peo ple who were homeless in some form of emergency shelter staying in a Motel using a department of human services voucher or sleeping some where considered unsheltered. Group raises awareness on dangers of no traffic Light at Esky intersection by Jordan Beck Escanaba members of the Delta county regional inclusive Community coalition Ricc held signs to raise awareness about the Lack of a traffic Light at scan Abas South Lincoln Road and 8th Avenue intersection during an informational rally late Friday afternoon. Bonnie Champeau a Wil Low Creek apartments Resi Dent and Ricc member who became involved with the Campaign for a Light about a decade ago said the intersection has caused problems for years. Its very hard to Cross Champeau said. Most of Willow creeks residents Are elderly people and people with disabilities. Due to the Lack of a Light Many of these people have been pre vented from accessing Busi Nesses schools and churches on the other Side of the Road Champeau said. I cant go to Church because i cant Cross the Highway Champeau said. Champeau said the Lack of a Light at the intersection has had More severe consequences than these As Well. We had a woman killed Here Champeau said. Carol Schiltz a Volunteer with Ricc said the group Aims to both raise awareness of the problem and lobby for a new traffic study of the area. In april they plan to submit a request for a new study to the Michigan department of transportation do along with More than 300 letters of sup port.
