To jumped from Hia bed and grasped him by Tho Thront and whiskers Tho whiskers it Long pair were false and came off in the Farmers hand Tho burglar struck or Bond in Tho face but to did not release his hold. His wife responded to his Call for help the burglar unable to release himself started for the head of Tho stairs dragging Tho Farmer with him. Mrs Bond seized the burglar by Ono leg. Tie knocked her Down. She jumped up and seized him again while her husband showered blows on his face. Reaching the head of Tho stairs both Tho Farmer and the burglar rolled to Tho Bottom. Tho noise made by the struggling men aroused a son of or. Bonds who joined his father and Mother in their attack on Tho burglar at this juncture the burglar Drew a pistol Anil would have shot Tho Farmer dead had not mrs Bond seeing the movement pushed the pistol to one Side. The Ball took effect in Groin of her Sou. The burglar fired again hitting or. Bond in the right Arm near Tho Elbow. The Farmer s wife seized hold of the , while her son ran out and got a club. The weapon was discharged twice while mrs. Bond held Tho barrel but doing no damage. Young Bond returned with a club and broke the burglar s right Arm with one blow. Tho pistol dropped to Tho floor. Mrs. Bond picked it up with Tho intention of shooting the burglar but before she could use it her son had knocked him senseless to Tho floor with two heavy blows on the head. All of the Bonds were badly injured. Tho Farmer was terribly beaten about the head Aud face. The pistol Ball had made an ugly Flash wound in his Arm and his body was bruised by Tho fall Down stairs. Mrs. Bond Hail a Long deep Cut Over her left Eye where Tho burglar had struck her her son s wounds were confined to the pistol shot in the Groin. Tho Ball entered near the hip joint and was imbedded in Tho flesh. They were All covered with blood As were the Wales Aud floor in the Hall. Mrs. Bond attended temporarily to the wants of her husband and son. She then bound the senseless burglar so he could not escape if he came to. Mounting a horse she started As Fust As it could carry her for this place. Arriving hero she aroused or. Billings and Constable Watts and started them both for her House. In an hour and a Quarter after leaving Home she arrived Back there and was soon followed by the doctor and the Constable. Or Bond and his son were found to to Suffri aug severely from their wounds but their injuries were pronounced not dangerous. The Ball was extracted from Young Bond s wound with Little difficulty. The burglar was found dangerously injured. The fall Down stairs had broken three of his ribs. The blows from Tho club besides breaking his right Arm had fractured his Skull in two places. To was also badly Cut and bruised. The ropes with which mrs. Bond had tied him were removed and he was placed on a bed. He suffered intensely. Or. Billings gave him every care and in an hour or two to Felt easier and gave an account of himself he was one of a gang of three professional burglars from Philadelphia. His Naomio his comrades were Jake Schell and William Fry they travelled through Tho country disguised As umbrella menders and paddlers. Their plan of operation was to enter a town and it thoroughly. They always get information of places where Good hauls could be made. In Milton they Learned that Farmer Bond had received a Day or two before the attempted burglary a Large sum of Money the proceeds of a Sale of cattle. They determined to make an Effort to obtain it. From various parties they had received a Good idea of the Interior of the House the habits of the inmates Etc. Fry unlocked the front door with a false key. Myers was to search the upper part of the House while his companions were to take the lower part when the noise up stairs warned the latter that Myers was discovered they fled leaving him in the lurch. Myers Siirid it was Bis intention to kill All three the Bonds at the foot of the stairs and he would have done so but for the Young Man knocking him Down with the club. On Myers person was found a pocket Book belonging to or. Bond containing this had been taken from his pantaloons before the Burgart was Milton a dispatch to t. Sun. Adventures of a slave boy. One warm afternoon in the summer of 1762, a half dozen Little slave boys were playing carelessly about a Cotton press about sixteen Miles from Newborn n. When Ono of the smallest and youngest of them overheard something that attracted his attention and which soon had Tho effect to Stop Tho play. From the conversation Between Tho adult slaves to Learned that All of them were to to taken in a few Days Back to the Interior part of Tho state out of the Way of Tho Yankee invaders. This set him to thinking. A Council of War was held by the Little Fellows. Then was made one of the most fervent speeches i favor of Liberty that waa Ever uttered a Southern slav6. The possessor of Tho Sharp ears had the reputation of a miscue Ziotis mid Headstrong boy among his playmates Buff now they listened to him with a kind of wonder. Boyish enthusiasm he rapidly sketched a plot for an escape to the Yankee lines. Tho time was fixed. They were to Start the next afternoon. But about three o clock Tho next morning to heard the booming of Tho guns at Tho Battle of Newborn to know precisely what that meant. Rising Ste Ithily he aroused his companions Tho plot but at Tho last moment their hearts failed the nothing daunted Tho Little fellow not yet 12 years of ago with such clothes Asho had on him and with a supreme Trust in himself and in started of in the direction of the Cann Nading. He took a circuit around the town and co in o in at the rear of the Union lines about 3 o clock in the afternoon. Tho Ili Sinico was about 20 Miles. He says now to Don t remember that he was tired. On the journey to was revolving in his mind a magnificent scheme of going Back by Ithily to organize a company of boys on to old Plantation with which to proposed to join the Union forces. He was taken on Board Tho Gui Bont Chasseur where he was soon advanced from Tho position of officers mess boy to the More honorable Ono of powder boy. Until 186-1 to was aug Tiger in various capacities As a boy in Tho Union army find Navy. Then came North and obtained Tho position of office boy for Tho Lato Henry j. Raymond. While he was to employed in the times office he the old Plantation. His pit her Mother and All his relatives were dead but an affection for the old place curried him Back. He was heartily welcomed and by none More than the widow of former master. Col streets to whom to undo a present of the family was still wealthy n but at that time sadly in need of Cash col. Streets was killed in Tho War. This was the first of several visits to Bis old Home. During his residence it Tho North to had come in Contact with Many Public men and had cultivated the Art of spooking. On his visit in 1872, they insisted for a Long Lime that they would nominate him for. Sheriff and it was Only his inability to qualify on account of nge that enabled him to silence their enter navies. Lie is regarded by them As a Patron and scarcely a coloured Man in his native country to whom to is not personally known Over comes to now York without a letter of recommendation to David Asho is familiarly called. To has secured positions of one kind or no her for Over filly of his Ppoole from the old North stale. The above is the Story briefly told David f. Nelson who yesterday received a notification that to had passed very successfully an examination for a clerkship in the now York Post office. To is a Little Over Twenty years old and has help tie Post of doorkeeper for the postmaster since 1870, when it was secured for him by Thurlow Weed. He is entirely self educated. A scrap Book in his Possession contains besides a mass of valuable statistics concerning his race Large selections of literature culled from Whittier Alice Gary and other writers of equal Merit. This morning to was overwhelmed with congratulations by his fellow employees of the Post office on the Succes he had attained. La Fayette and courier. Liat is respectable society we heard a Man otherwise intelligent enough lately sneer at another said he never meets him in respectable society. Tho speaker did not mean however hat the person to affected to look Down upon was immoral but merely that his Circle Obj intimates was not composed of the fashionable or Rich. This notion of what constitutes respectable society is quite a favorite one with that class of individuals whom Thackery has so significantly called snobs empty. Pretence is always making own characteristics a Standard to which it strives to measure the respectability of persons it Large. In a Community or Mere Money getting wealth is the test of respectability. Among the proud narrow minded respectability depends on being descended from ancestors who have married their cousins for so Many centuries that neither Muscles nor brains Are left any longer to degenerate descendants. Every conceited foot thinks himself in like Way the Only Man really weighty the Only person who is really respectable. But True respectability depends on no such adventitious circumstances. To be respectable is to be worthy of respect and he most deserves respect who has the most virtue. Tho humblest Man who bravely does his duty is More worthy of respect is More truly respectable than the covetous millionaire among Bis Money bags or the arro Gant Monarch on his throne the Fine lady who Back bites her neighbor is less worthy than an honest Washerwoman. The profligate Noble Tho he May Wear a dozen orders in his Button Hole is often really not As respectable As the shoe Black who cleans his boots. That which is called the exalts the one and despise Tho other by t it does not make then respectable according to the real meaning of the word. Their respectability is but a. Shallow Sham As they themselves frequently feel and those who worship them Bow Down to a a thing of feathers and tinsel. The selfish Idle drone who wastes in his own gratification and dissipates the Fortune of his progeny is not and can not to respectable but the hardworking and self denying father who wears out his life to bring up his children is even though be to a Day labourer entitled to distinctive respect. Or. Dio Lewis Aud morals of Maine the crusaders and the Law. Ringor correspondence Boston advertiser or. Dio Lewis in his recent Temperance tour extended his travel to our City where he was entertained with a marked degree of hospitality As the guest of the place. Though his modes of proceeding were severely offensive to a very Large part of his to arcs yet All were disposed to Overlook his idiosyncrasies and except him As one of the friends of the Temperance cause which was receiving so Largo a share of the Public interest. Thi hospitality to has seen fit to reciprocate by the grossest slanders against our City and our Laws by widespread contributions to the Public press of the country. He represents our City As a besotted place and to support his charge affirms that with n population of inhabitants we have 300 places where liquors Are old making one to every 50 persons. A slander Intro completely destitute of truth was never propagated. During the last year under a rum administration when the prohibitory Law was entirely ignored 1go persons in All paid a United states special tax As Sellers of liquors in our City. The severe penalties of the United states Law drove every seller to thus buy his peace with the general government and having done this no fears were entertained from the municipal authorities. This reduces the doctor s estimate about one half while our population was about 33 per cent larger than he stated. But this state of facts ceased to exist before the doctor came a new City government having been elected adorable to the enforcement of the Law. During the present year the whole number of liquor Sellers who. Have paid the United states tax is 91, of which 15 Are or malt liquors alone. Fifteen others Are innkeepers and apothecaries whose business would seem to exempt them As coming within Tho scope of the doctor s denunciations. This reduces the actual lumber of tipping shops saloons and vendors of intoxicating liquors to 61. A canvass of these show 19 to be american and 42 foreign mostly Irish. Of the latter almost the whole Are located at and around a place by the wharves known As the half acre resorted to by Only the lowest class of persons and these mainly if not wholly foreigners and sailors. It must be remembered that we have annually several thousand arrivals of vessels at our ports almost wholly belonging to other places and these afford to the shops in question the advert arg Bates. About one liquor establishment some 750 inhabitants instead of 50, a Tho veritable doctor would have the world believe. That our City is cursed with the sin of intemperance we do not deny but it is asserted in All Confidence that it is less so than any other place of size and business character As a shipping port in now England or other states. The evil however is rapidly decreasing under the healthful action of the woman s and Young men s crusades and especially lie prohibitory that Law which the doctor is so anxious to abolish to make room for his own scheme. With reference to that Law it seems very appropriate to remark Here that whatever May be the state of things in our City and other cities in the state it May be regarded As very generally True that the liquor traffic is almost utterly exterminated in almost All the smaller towns of the state and to a very Large degree in every other where but Lor the Law it would exist to the most disastrous extent. The friends of Temperance everywhere May rest assured of a vast Good effected to the cause by the Law in question. The great mass of the people embracing the unanimous voice of the Temperance portion of them Are in favor of continuance As a most efficient instrument for Good in the final redemption of the state from the evil in question. P. News week Home Nch. Cata Strophy wreck of a. Passenger train. Stony Creek conn., july 7. The impatient haste of a station agent in changing a switch at this place this morning caused the loss of one valuable life and the severe injury of a half score or More inflicting dislocation or cuts upon full a Hundred of people and brought about the Complete wrecking of a passenger train. Stony Creek is a Little Hamlet near the sound Lemiles from new Haven to the East upon the Shore line division of the new Fork new Haven and Hartford Railroad. West of the town a sluggish Creek winds toward the sound. This Stream and marches the Railroad crosses upon a Long trestle work the place of this morning s disaster. At this place the train was backed upon a Side track to take on two More passenger cars. The lengthened train with Sis cars and More than 200 passengers was moving from the siding to the main tract when the rear truck of the car at the end left Tho rails. The general report of the railway officials and the concurrent belief of the passengers and the people of the place of to show that this Only could have happened by careless haste on the part of Beech in moving the switch Back just As the rear car was passing Over thus disconnecting Tho rails of the siding from the main track upon which the train was passing. Beach strenuously denies this and claims that the truck ran off the track Waile the switch was in proper place.
